The Friday The 13th series has been an absolute mess since Part III. Once Jason leaves Camp Blood/Camp Crystal Lake the series doesn't just go off the rails, it goes off the rails, takes the rails with it, and exploded into a ball of flame.

I know that 2009 Reboot had a big opening and fell off a cliff, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as it being a bad movie. It opened on Friday the 13th, a big part of the appeal is seeing it on that day. And it's got a limited appeal beyond its fanbase. I don't think bad word of mouth had much to do on how well it held. It's always going to be a frontloaded release from here on out. That's why the budget has to be small. Freddy Vs Jason is about as big as those to 2 films can get, and that's because it relies on 2 franchises. I'm not even sure a FVJ 2 could do that well, the novelty is over. Especially when fans don't even know what state either franchise is in. Without Englund whats's the point of more FVJ?

It's a damn shame.

I love a good slasher movie, especially one guaranteed to have at least one pair of nice titties. The reboot back in 2009 was entertaining enough. I should rewatch it again soon.

I'm utterly baffled how you could fuck that up. The Friday the 13th films are supposed to be made cheap and fast so that the studio can make an easy buck. That's basically the entire horror genre in a nutshell.

The idea that Paramount, who must have spent millions developing the script, are now going to lose their grasp on this franchise is nothing short of a joke.

This, above all else, might be the most damning thing that I've heard about Paramount and their bungling of their operations over the years. I don't know where this studio starts trying to turn around their shambolic operations.

This just sets up New Line (via WB) to create their own 'horror-verse' with Freddy Kruger, Jason, Final Destination, uhhh.., whatever is in The Conjuring (I haven't seen the films) and Critters. Yes, Critters.

Which is what all the FT13 did. They are done fast and cheap and make all their money in the first week.

:(

I guess the Saw reboot will be running unopposed now.
They should call it Seen.
Saw Legacy |OT| Seen

There will definitely be another Friday the 13th film. It just won't be before 2018 now.

If I had to guess I'd say 2020 or 2021.
I hope so and I hope the previous idea about the movie taking place in the winter will be back, because:
I just want my winter camp FT13th.

I don't think it's safe to say audiences don't care about slashers anymore. There's no evidence to support that at all.

The more modern slashers failed, because they were shit.

I think its fair to count the modern slashers because the vast majority of the genre is shit. Even subversive stuff like You're Next didn't do that well.

Slashers have always been frontloaded even in their heyday. The Elm Street films proved the exception to the rule Dream Warriors and Dream Master each charted for over 2 months but they were zeitgeist level hits. Friday the 13th films always released to solid numbers for a couple of weeks, enough to make them extremely profitable for Paramount then disappeared.

This thread reminded me that there's no Friday the 13th Bluray collection yet :(

There is one but it's already out of print.

Disappointing. I know it was probably going to be shit, but I was looking forward to it. Not a lot of widespread releases for a slasher fan these days.

This kind of Hollywood logic will always baffle the fuck out of me. The fuck does some lame ass J-horror American remake sequel have to do with Friday the 13th? Why was Tron 3 cnancelled because Tomorrowland was shit? I can't.

Disney did The Lone Ranger, John Carter, and Tomorrowland. The sequel to Alice in Wonderland wasn't a smash hit like the original either and didn't net Disney any great returns. The Jungle Book live action adaption did incredibly well. The next Pirates movie, to me, might be a coin toss on returns.

Disney has Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar to fall back on as solid money makers along with associated merchandising. It's up in the air how long they can milk those gravy trains with yearly installments, sequels, spin-offs, and such but if there's money to be had, they're going to take every opportunity to at it.

I guess corporate culture is different and how movie studios want to go about producing and distributing films is their own thing.

Anyway. Maybe Jason would be better suited for premium TV or a Amazon or Netflix distributed series. With Evil Dead and Stranger Things, along with shows like basic cable hits like The Walking Dead, there are other avenues for the genre and that character.

A snow covered F13 sounds good in theory just for the visuals, but it doesn't really mesh well with the classic formula. You would probably need to turn it into something completely different.

I keep seeing a Kickstarter on FB for a fan made Friday short film....I remember seeing a trailer for it and it didn't look half bad for fan made. Damn just can't remember the name now....anyone else seen this?

Before Jungle Book there was Maleficent & Cinderella - both did pretty well for Disney. Pete's Dragon bombed, but they are already looking set to make a killing with Beauty & The Best. Cruella is also scheduled to go into production soon too.

Last day of the season of a Ski Resort. Only people around are the young staff. Basically the same formula as the rest of the series.

While we're on the topic, if you haven't seen the 6 hour docu about the Friday The 13th Series, "Crystal Lake Memories" - you really should give it a look.

They should make a Three Stooges/Weekend at Bernies type of film. You got Jason, Freddy, and Mike Myers who all get together to go on a vacation with their doctor. Next thing you know the crazy doctor has a heart attack and they decide to just do a weekend at Bernies thing and then you have a bunch of crazy high jinks going on.

Jason and Freddie, my childhood...

darn bummer it's canned

I would love more Jason flicks and a really good Elm Street reboot, but honestly, New Nightmare, Jason X, Friday the 13th 2009, and Freddy vs Jason feel too good to be true. I'm amazed that we live in the timeline where all four of those movies not only got made, but got made perfectly. Freddy and Jason could so easily have petered out after weak final chapters (Elm Street 6 and Jason Goes to Hell); maybe delivering two lousy reboots in the vein of Elm Street 2010. Instead, we got four cinematic love letters to the greatest slasher franchises of all time.

It's a damn shame.

You would definitely enjoy Zombeavers, my friend.

Some dude is driving a snowmobile trying to escape Jason, then out of nowhere Jason is in front of him with his machete and slashes his head off.

We see the head still inside the helmet rolling and making blood on the snow while the body still on the snowmobile hits a tree in the distance.

I really wish people would stop supporting these movies since Victor Salva is an admitted and convicted pedophile who used his position in Hollywood to facilitate his abuse of young boys.

He did his time, makes great movies, and pedophilia is a mental disorder, so I don't think of pedophiles as irredeemable monsters and I'll keep supporting his movies as long as they're good.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I skipped that Blu-ray set because I hate nonstandard case depth and especially height.
Then they came out with the double-features but only through Part VIII. I still picked those up for $28 total. I don't give a shit about Jason Goes To Hell but not having Jason X on disc burns.

I'd pay extra to not have Jason Goes To Hell.
