Virgin galactic tickets are 250k per person. I can sell my house and see space..... I know what I’m doing when I get old.

Lol true that, hmmm... thats nice to think its a possibility for me also... ill be homeless when i land but then i would have been into space!

Make a different thread or go to Reddit.
This forum would go downhill quickly if people made new threads every time they had a negative opinion about a subject. I think it's much more effective to just post in the thread that already exists. In this case, my post happens to be negative. Deal with it.

Has it occurred to you that while it’s not ideal for space exploration to be headed by private billionaires going forward, it’s also better than no space exploration whatsoever?

Further, has it occurred to you that Bezos employs many, many scientists and engineers who are getting to expand their skills and knowledge about space flight far more than they would have otherwise?

Has it occurred to you for one single fucking second that isn’t just a rich asshole getting his rocks off, but that it will lead to future space exploration on a larger and faster scale?

But yeah… billionaires bad, right? It’s just Jeff and his mates fucking about with their money 🙄
From what I gather it's mostly a publicity stunt for Bezos to make more money off of NASA and other space contracts. Guess I was wrong about his motives. He's trying to make it seem like it's about raising awareness on "the vulnerability of Earth", but that message rings hollow when his company has a big role in pollution in the first place. Who knows, maybe it'll open his eyes and he might use his wealth to improve the situation.

I thought people had speculated that the real motivation for these kinds of things (other than "I've always wanted to go to space") is eventually mining asteroids for resources.

From what you gather? Where have you seen information to suggest that it’s just a publicity stunt? Or by ‘from what I gather’ you just mean that it’s what you think, despite you having no actual proof?

And while Amazon have been a polluter, they have also signed up to a climate pledge to be net zero carbon by 2040, ahead of all governments.

Is that a Thomas Sowell influence I detect?

The beginning of an era where rich people can do extraordinary things because they are insanely rich. First space thrill rides, next immortality!

Why do you assume these are just thrill rides?

The technology being worked on by Space X and Blue Origin will make space travel easier, cheaper and more convenient. This will speed up progress no end.

If left to government organisations, prey to the vagaries of political opinion, space exploration will stall.

Yes, well. I don’t speak Dutch.

Also, if you have to go hunting for small articles on small news sites, I’m not sure it’s the best evidence, to be honest.
You asked for proof. There it is. Use google translate if you're interested. Or don't. I don't mind either way.

I didn't hunt for this article to prove a point or anything. That's the biggest and most reliable Dutch news source, and I happened to read that article. Take that as you will.

Mate. If there were verifiable evidence that Bezos was doing this just as a publicity stunt (say internal emails and other communications directly stating this) then it would have been picked up by more outlets than some small news resource in the Netherlands.

You‘re trading in conjecture, based on a bias against the dude because he’s extremely rich, and his business has some questionable practises when it comes to his staff.

Blue Origin’s mission statement is to create sustainable, reusable space transport for the purposes of resource acquisition. You have no evidence to suggest that this is a lie.

When did I ever claim that was a lie? Bezos is apparently selling those reusable rockets you mentioned, and this launch is a publicity stunt to prove they work. Several space agencies are interested in buying them, but there's competition from others like Musk. Blue Origin is a company and like any company it's trying to make money.

Love to see it. While the 3 big players are BO, Virgin and SpaceX many other companies are getting in on this race. There are so many its hard to keep track of them. I am sure some will implode without ever launching anything but it is great to see healthy competition. I have been waiting for this for so damn long.

Why?

This is suborbital flight, the same that Branson did. We already did this 50 years ago.

Is still does not see how this is in any way remarkable. What Musk is doing with Starship is way more interesting and really the future.

I don't want to go to space. Absolutely fuck all up there. At least Thailand has hookers.
Well, for about 30 seconds there were two of the world's richest men, a teenaged boy, some old broad, and no released film footage.

I think they gave Thailand a run for the money :p

It was really cool to watch. I hope in 20-30 years this will be something that people can relatively afford if they save up. I know it's something I'm going to be setting aside money for. Hopefully there won't be age restrictions!

Hey when it comes to fucking rockets that can go boom, you walk before running. I dunno man how you cant see this as anything other than fucking incredible, in the space of a week we've had 2 private companies launch their respective CEO's into space and we've another billionaire trying to get to Mars ffs... 10-15yrs ago this shit was for Governments, now the private sector have figured out the hard bits its gonna get better, safer and cheaper..

Should’ve stayed up there long enough to have to pee in a bottle like other people in Amazon vehicles.

Hopefully he gets higher than ~0.05% of the way to the moon. Space sure does make billionaires’ time and money seem really ineffective.
yes, hollywood esque grand capital ship interstellar travel and space colonization likely would exceed the wealth of all nations, combined, to achieve. But the power of truth is such that it can be accomplished in short order with the right instructions, the right line of code, the right words.

Once true ai comes online, it will in short order master molecular machinery, true nanotech. We will start assembling vast celestial ships in orbit, and terraforming planets with living computer controlled molecular machines, unevolvable intelligently designed artificial life at the limits of physics by a superintelligence.

With full self repair self replicating machines that are fully autonomous and able to fully recycle landfills as well as maximally extract energy from the environment, in ageless immortal perfect machines that grow, divide and evolve, the cost of anything becomes virtually zero.

Bezos trying to turn around that public view of himself.

charities are nonprofit, but wouldn't surprise if charity execs have high multi hundred thousand dollar salaries. From what I've seen not only do some of they charge some of the people they claim to help, but things like hunger never seem to be fixed no matter how much is given to them.

I would maybe agree with you, if Bezos would do it for himself and not bother anyone else. But because of his hurt ego, he sues and lobbies himself into projects like the Artemis program. They are years behind, but now everybody should wait for him. He wanted military space contracts, not because he has the technology, just because he wants control and influence. He is worse than Boeing, but still, everybody should see his company as a serious contender for all those space missions. He is holding us back when it comes to space travel.
