Jez Corden: Playstation Pulling Back From Releasing Their Tentpole Single Player Games on PC

"I was talking about PlayStation doing day-and-day and doing PC. And then I got off on a tangent about the social aspects of PlayStation. And the reason Steam has become popular is because, at least partially I think, it is easier to go viral with Steam. And you would think logically that PlayStation would want to tap into that, right? And make their franchises go viral by being on Steam and being on a bigger platform. [...] But I actually heard the complete opposite today from a very good source, that PlayStation probably is pulling back from PC and also that the crossbuy buttons and the PlayStation/PC iconography is from outdated old builds and is never going to be used. [...] I don't actively investigate what PlayStation's doing. Because it's not my beat. But I do get PlayStation information incidentally sometimes by researching Microsoft stuff for my actual beat. But it does seem like the games that PlayStation released on PC didn't move the needle for them at all. Partially because they were launched so late, but maybe they've used that as evidence that they shouldn't go any further, and that they should remain more Nintendo in their approach and keep things more exclusive. Except service games. [...] But I do think those sort of tentpole singleplayer games like Yotei and stuff, maybe they just don't come to PC, or they come to PC years later"

I am not surprised if this occurs. It would be terrible business if Playstation released their games day and date on PC. It would be great for gamers, but If consoles like Steam Machine and the next-Xbox play Playstation games day 1, why would I buy a PS6, where I would have to pay for online and pay full price for games? It always made no sense

Playstation first party games are such a small portion of its overall revenue too. They make their money from microtransactions, services, and third party sales. Their PC revenue for Single Player games is a fraction of that. If you look at Steam Charts, Playstation releasing their single player games on PC closer to their release date on PS5, it did nothing to generate more sales. Playstation is going to protect their ecosystem in this changing market

It has been nearly 15 months since Astro Bot has been released. Still no word on a PC port

Smart move. Even if they do release on PC they should make them exclusive to a Playstation PC Store at the very least for a year.

PC players don't care. They waited years for RDR, years for Sony exclusives and they will wait or just not care if Sony stops releasing them.

So basically what he says is what Sony has been doing since Horizon released. How tf is this "pulling back"?

I don't disagree. This is to stop Playstation gamers from jumping ship and buying a PC, a Steam Box, or even the next Xbox

Non surprises. Valve is coming after the home console market now.
No they're not. Valve knows it's bread and butter. They're complimenting their existing business model with side ventures like the GabeCube. They're not expecting to challenge Sony or Nintendo in the console market. It would effectively be suicide for them to try.

Not doing day and date for SP titles is what I expected. They should keep up with the late ports though. Per the Insomniac leak it only cost them around $2.5 Million to port Ratchet to PC. So after just 60k sales they break even and the (very unreliable) steam ownership estimates put it at around 500k.

With them owning Nixxes, late PC ports is just low-risk guaranteed income.

The optimal approach depends on the stage of the console life cycle imo. I would not be surprised if they pull back from PC temporarily when PS6 releases, to encourage as many as possible to buy the console, only to move back towards being PC friendly later.

Tsushima did very well on PC. If they think eg. not releasing Yotei or Astro Bot on PC is going to make a significant number of PC gamers go and buy a PS5 at this stage, they are dreaming.

The first sentence is exactly it and just absolute common sense. Outside of MP titles, the Show and maybe a Lego game, it makes total sense. Putting a 6 to 12 to 18 to 24 month delay on SP titles, on a per title basis also makes sense.

Tentpole single-player games being platform exclusive at launch was never not going to be the case.

As I've explained before, the *entire* premise of first-party is to serve as brand-identity leaders for the platform. Because if they were looking purely to maximize direct revenue return they'd target the widest audience possible.

If a game is multi-player or service-based then naturally the calculus changes because titles like that live or die based on engagement numbers, so the priority becomes to open wide with MAU as a KPI, because the assumption is within any user cohort there will a hardcore of "whales" who will contribute disproportionately to the overall revenue stream.

In a single player stand-alone offer, essentially every sale made is of equal value. So opening "narrow" then going "wide" in terms of addressable market makes much more sense as its a value driver to the host of the "narrow" distro channel through FOMO and brand identification.

Stop posting Jez's posts, let Topher do it, I can't even make a joke because of you. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
I'm honestly starting to worry about Jez's mental health. I wonder if he's seeing a mental health therapist.

Good. Sony felt there will be a big competiton coming up. Sony will not be stupid to alienate its millions of fanbase and console owners and potential PS5 or Ps6 in the future buyers. For me, with Steambox coming up and xbox pc hybrid, and along with switch 2 and Ps5, I want too see the battle of exclusives again to give us better choices and better quality 1st and 2nd party exclusives games witch are more optimize and fully maximizing the power of a specific platform. Im actually interested with the steambox, maybe more than switch 2 which I also plan to buy in the future, but we shall see, which one will go along with my PS console.

That would be good and logical.
A console must have exclusives.
A console without exclusives results in sales like the Xbox Series.
And a console with exclusives results in sales like the Switch and Switch 2.

store purchase? sure. but I do not need nor do i want ANOTHER garbage launcher.

It still surprising to see Sony SinglePlayer games on Steam. Most I assumed would be last gen games to Steam when new entry is coming on PS6 sort of move. Like releasing Zero Dawn when Forbidden West was coming.

Will be very surprised to see day one launch on both PC and Playstation. I will honestly buy a PS6 if I only have to buy the game one time and don't have to move my PC to the TV when I want to use the couch.

The whole Sony on PC novelty is dead. There are so many goooood games now and I don't see any Sony game as "must play" especially in this generation.
The only actually good game they released on PC is Returnal. Their output has been wholly mediocre this gen. With so many high quality games coming out on Steam, I doubt anyone will care.

They can stop after Bloodborne is on PC.
It's already on PC.

The real question is not if Jez makes shit up. It's if Jez makes shit up in some deranged attempt to bait people who actually know things into telling him real news and when it doesn't work if he just makes shit up in the opposite direction to offset the stank.

Man gotta do what man gotta do to play those high quality exclusives, at this point no point to get base ps5 which is old af and pretty weaksauce specwise vs even lowend pc desktops, nor ps5pr0 which is around lowend/midrange pc dekstops but overpriced as all fuck, so gonna wait till ps6 launch banking on that backwards compatibility and auto-enhance of ps5 library =D
