Jez Corden: Playstation Pulling Back From Releasing Their Tentpole Single Player Games on PC

Their games sells well in the PC. I guess a PS App is more plausible, but leaving PC as a whole...

It is always possible. They might see the Steam Machine and Steam Deck being too much of an ecosystem threat to the PS6 and PS6 handheld. Or they might not. Who knows how they even determine what they need to do next. Doesn't bother me, I buy most of their games on my PlayStation anyway. I've double-dipped on most of them, but the only games I have finished again on PC were Ratchet and Clank, TLOU, God of War, Spider-Man, Returnal and Tsushima.

Hopefully they can mostly pivot away from this GaaS nonsense as well, that is far more damaging to their first party output compared to the PC stuff they are doing.

Pretty much all Sony games bombed hard on PC so it wouldn't be that surprising.
More like 50-50.

Success: HZD, GOW, Spider-Man, GOT, Stellar Blade, Helldivers 2, Days Gone

Decent: HFW, GOWR, Spider-Man 2, TLOU, TLOU Part II, Miles Morales

Flops: Sackboy, Returnal, Uncharted, Rift Apart, Concord (lol),

As a consumer I'd rather have their games on all platforms, even though most Sony games no longer appeal as much to me as they once did.
As a business I'd understand them being more cautious. Between the steam machines, Steam OS, portable PCs and MS supposedly working on some hybrid, there are increasing number of ways to get into PC gaming, and there's a clear effort from multiple companies to offer a more streamlined and console like PC gaming experience.

With next gen on the horizon, I don't know if having everyone assume that all their games will eventually come to PC is going to be beneficial to them.

Jez tells you one day that PS games will arrive on PC on day one, the next day that Sony will no longer release its single-player games on PC, we'll see what he says tomorrow.

I've never understood the argument that Sony should release its single player exclusives on day one on other platforms. Yes, the logic is that doing so would sell more copies of the game, but this completely ignores the fact that PlayStation's business model relies on selling hardware in order to lock consumers into its ecosystem, and generate repeated revenue.

Put simply, why settle for selling one 70$ game when you can get 700$ once they are committed to your ecosystem?

Of course, not everyone on PC who might be interested in God of War is going to buy a console. You will lose some sales. But Sony's gamble is that the number of consumers who do buy into the hardware will not only offset that loss but ultimately create more long-term profit. And it's a gamble that has paid off well so far.

The PS5 has already generated more revenue and profit from software sales than the entire PS4 life cycle. If Sony releases its biggest games on other platforms from day one, it is effectively betting that it will sell so many copies on PC that this will outweigh the long-term value of keeping those customers within its ecosystem, a bet that they've yet to make, and honestly, probably may not without risking their business model.

The day Sony decide to release God of War on PC on day one is the moment they've realised they've peaked their console sales. That day will eventually come, particularly as you see younger kids these days less interested in PlayStation than they are Roblox or Fortnite. They'll need business models, ones that are not dependant on hardware. PlayStation's manic investment into service games underlines they are aware of that pending day. Microsoft have already been forced into transitioning into that space through their own failures.

One day it's day and date the other is pulling back :messenger_grinning_sweat: :pie_roffles: :pie_roffles:
Sorry but this guy and his mental instability has no credibility for Sony related news.

Anyway take it for what it's worth, during the latest financial results every talk related to gaas was significantly toned down and PC wasn't mentioned at all as part of their strategies and expansions/growth goals.

He is delusional, Sony first party games make now almost as much revenue outside PS (most in PC) than in PS, and Sony is working in their own PC store and launcher.

Sony also stated multiple times that PC is a platform with a huge ROI for them (all their tentpole ports have been profitable) and that instead of cannibalizing console sales PC is helping to grow their console userbase's with new players. The active userbase of their console is at all time highs.

What Sony could do, pretty likely at the same time they release PS6, would be to start releasing all their games, including tentpoles, day one on PC PSN, their own store. And maybe with crossbuy with their console version. And to stop releasing their own games on Steam or Epic Store, or maybe to release them in Steam & Epic a couple years after releasing then on PSN.

Now run those same numbers, but remove Helldivers 2.

This is retarded, it's like saying Nintendo wouldn't be a good business without Mario, or that Take 2 wouldn't be without GTA.

Their PC numbers were already great, had a huge growth and ROI before Helldivers 2. In fact, the ROI of a late port is higher than a new release, particularly one like Helldivers 2 that took 8 years to be made.

Helldivers 2 release obviously caused a peak, but the year after it they kept mostly the same numbers without Helldivers 2 release.

Pretty much all Sony games bombed hard on PC so it wouldn't be that surprising.
All of them have been profitable, a PC port only costs them around a couple millions and they generated more revenue than that to Sony.

If they would have bombed they wouldn't have ported almost their whole current gen catalog plus most of their main previous gen titles.

Just 3 days ago they announced the PlayStation monitor and combined with the speakers and headset for PC compatibility with a setup with a connected PC on a desk.. they would change strategy just because of the gabebox announcement?
lol I don't think so.
It's not like the industry didn't know the gabebox was coming.

But hey if they leave then bye bitch ! They refuse to actually bring the games we want anyway. They can keep fairgame$ too
Eh. I don't think them making a PC monitor is an indication of anything. Sony produces screens/tvs as a corporation and tapping the PlayStation name for PC monitors makes sense. I don't think the PC monitor is an indication either way.

While Jez is as reliable as a broken clock, I have said this previously, Sony are in control of where and when they release their games, they can change their strategy to best suit them in the market, whether that be changing the release schedule to PC or stopping releasing games on PC altogether they will do what is best for them. And it isnt a fixed strategy so it's no use either side saying 'but Sony said....'

Only last years GOTY winner....Astrobot. Still no mention of a port well over a year later

Oh I don't expect astrobot it's too good and too full of IPs.

Just like I'd be super surprised to see GT7.

Ports are usually games with no licensing issues.

The whole Sony on PC novelty is dead. There are so many goooood games now and I don't see any Sony game as "must play" especially in this generation.
When you are the dominant machine for the third party market, you don't need exclusives to survive. We'd obviously love some great Sony exclusives, but it is easy to see why they're slowing down. Games like FIFA, COD, and especially GTA are what sell the majority of hardware for them.

Xbox doesn't have anywhere near the same hold with third party. Just look at sales splits for games between the two platforms. MS has no choice but to keep publishing games on the other platforms as those are actually still thriving.

You are correct that's how things used to be. So tell me, if one can finish Wolverine or Intergalactic via streaming, 20-30 hour or whatever games, why would they buy hardware?

If your primary revenue is generated via streaming, why are you in the hardware business at all?

It makes no sense beyond the optics of still having the option for consumers.

If on the other hand the title is only available on the streaming service you are the operator for, then the first-party logic still applies in that its a mechanism to upsell the service. The catch being that is less potentially lucrative than selling service products on a service platform where you theoretically get to have your cake and eat it!
The downside being -and this is what's fucked MS up royally- if the parent (streaming) service isn't growing to the desired scale, you end up a loser on all fronts.

You have a smaller addressable market within which to whale hunt, you have killed your sales revenue income on your primary platform, and long-term devalued the property by being forced into a position where you then need to sell "outside" the ecosystem a thing that was essentially offered as a value-add to your underperforming service and hardware platform.

I'd have said PlayStation could tap into the exclusive premium nature of Nintendo a few years ago but at this point I feel their reputation for great exclusives is on a downward trajectory.

Reminder Jez knows shit

I am old enough to remember a State of Play where they announced a 1440 p monitor and speakers with PC compatibility

They are embracing the PC
Both products were designed with the PS5 desktop gaming experience in mind, offering a high-quality visual and audio desktop experience for those who want the option of playing in personal spaces.
PS5 monitor that's compatible with PC :messenger_winking_tongue:

They've been doing these PC monitors for a while, wasn't there 3 of them before? :pie_thinking: Or was that not under the PS branding?

Makes sense. PlayStation is a super large platform and PS5 is doing better than even PS4. After retreating from the failed GAAS pivot, we'll likely see more single player tentpole games the next 5 years than we saw the previous 5 years.

Why would you buy a PS6? You don't have to, just buy their games.

Also you would buy a PS6 to get their single player games on day one.

lol, sure, they will keep spending more on games, and hide them behind proprietary hardware instead of selling them on pc which they simply will hardly be able to ignore if they are to profit... they will release on smart refrigirators or flop, sales of sp games cant cover costs, i bet that demons souls didnt make even, but they have to keep the platform relevant somehow...

why would a 1440p monitor and speaker mean they're embracing PC. plenty of people use a PlayStations with monitors on their desks.

You either believe this guy or you dont, which is it PonyGaf? Last week everyone said he put out an article so the opposite must be true. You still keeping that same energy? Haha
