JK Simmons returning to voice Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1 | Character chosen because he's R-rated

At San Diego Comic-Con 2023, we were able to sit down with NetherRealm Studios' Ed Boon, Thiago Gomes, and Dominic Cianciolo, along with voice actors Kelly Hu and Yuri Lowenthal, to discuss Mortal Kombat 1.

Hu and Lowenthal discussed a bit about their characters and the changes made to them as the next installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise serves as a reboot for the series.

The interview follows a big reveal that happened during the Mortal Kombat panel that took place yesterday, which revealed that Homelander, Peacemaker, Omni-Man, along with returning Mortal Kombat characters Quan Chi, Ermac, and Takeda will be available in the first Kombat Pack. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon explains why the studio chose Homelander, Peacemaker, and Omni-Man as guest characters and how all three appropriately tie into the theme of the first Kombat Pack.

IGN: And as for DLC Fighters, I think you've confirmed now it's official Peacemaker, Homelander and OmniMan. What a trio.

YL:
When I heard that I thought it was a joke. The best.

IGN: Is there a theme? Because I think with Mortal Kombat X and 11, there were sort of a theme to your DLC characters, horror movies and action movies. What's the theme here?
EB:
Well, obviously it's R rated or M rated heroes and villains more from the comic book genre. Again,
Peacemaker, Homelander, Omni-Man, they're all in this hyper and violent category of guests. And that's the theme there along with the Mortal Kombat characters of Takeda and Quan Chi. And I'm drawing a blank, and Ermac. If you think of the Omni-Man and the Homelander, that's the kind of category that is our guest characters.

The theme didn't really need explaining, IGN.

Good to know JK is doing it, it wouldn't be the same otherwise. I wonder if they managed to get the voices of the other 2.

Amazon needs to come out with the new season of The Boys and Invincible soon, before the super hero movie bubble bursts, or wait however many years after the dust has settled.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

There is no super hero bubble burst, just bad super hero movies

There is definetly an superhero bubble burst. At least with Marvel and DC.
People have been saying this for a long time, but when a good enough hero movie comes out people show up. The logic of a bubble bursting doesn't make sense because people will bend it to only apply when it suits their argument but ignore it when it doesn't.

Recent case in point: Across the Spiderverse

Now we wait for people to come in, quote this, and try and apply a bunch of caveats and asterisks as to why it doesn't count.

There is no bubble burst happening, people just want good content and will show up for it. So when Kraven bombs and Deadpool 3 sells, it's to be expected.

What's good is good. What's bad is bad. Box office sales will always be highly tied to that, obviously.

However, people are going to expect more as time goes on. Deadpool, The Boys, Invincible, etc. aren't going to be able to rely so heavily on "shock value", as that's being done more and more as time goes on.

With the other Marvel / DC stuff, that doesn't rely on that, but instead relies on their stronger legacy characters, you can already see the other franchises slowing down. Mainly because they've ran through all the interesting ones (Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, etc.).

The irony is you talk about caveats, and yet bring up Spider-Man and Deadpool. Arguably Marvel's ace in the hole. And those come out what, like every 3-4 years.

You talk like previous Marvel werent shit. Only good movies were Captain America 2-3, Last 2 Avengers, Doctor Strange. The rest were average or bad (most of them), but still did good in box office.

And like the poster above said, those movies were supported in good characters or good-charismatic actors, a good villain in Thanos. Now you have Ms Marvel like the flagship superhero post Avengers, and villain that was presented in antman, and that was accused of violence by his girlfriend.
