...movie.

Johnny Depp has reportedly been approached to play a villain in the next Batman movie.

The actor wanted to portray The Riddler in the sequel to The Dark Knight, according to studio bosses.

A source said: "Johnny would be amazing as The Riddler. The studio knew they needed someone who could match or even top the late Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker in the most recent film The Dark Knight, and think Johnny has the potential to do so."

The Riddler is a manic supervillain who baffles Batman with his cryptic criminal clues. He first appeared in the comic book series in 1948, and was portrayed by Frank Gorshin in the 1960s US TV show, a role which earned him an Emmy nomination.

More recently, The Riddler was played by Jim Carrey in the 1995 movie Batman Forever.

Studio bosses are also said to be keen to get Philip Seymour Hoffman to play The Penguin in the new movie.

Read it in The Province today. Rumour, not an announcement, but interesting nonetheless =)

Terrible choice. I don't want a pretty boy in my gritty Batman movie. Too many stupid teen girls in the theater gawking at Depp for me to enjoy the movie.

Is this the part where someone links back to that archival thread of everyone bitching about Ledger when he was first announced?

GAF gets its way, perhaps? :(

Personally, as I said in the previous fake-out thread, I dont want him.

sarcasm? are you mocking the people that said the same about ledger?

BS. The Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Penguin stuff goes back to before Dark Knight, and there were even some grumblings about Depp as Joker. I doubt there is anything to this other than rampant fanboy speculation.

Agreed. Steve Buscemi for the role, plz.

Johnny Depp will be a good second choice, though.

Not like TDK's showings weren't full of teenage girls fantasizing about being romantically killed by Ledger's Joker.

I think it's safe to assume that.

As mentioned in the other thread, it doesn't matter what the studio wants. I guarantee they won't risk having the next Batman movie without Bale, and Bale isn't contracted to do a third film if Nolan doesn't return.

That is word for word one of the complaints from a poster here with regards to Ledger playing The Joker.

Didn't Depp learn his lesson last time when he was trying to get a role in TDK?

Does Bale have to make another call?

I thought Depp was busy filming his documentary "I Love to Wear Hats"?

this is turning out how the first four movies ended up

Burton does two good movies, WB brings in schumaker for the remaining 2.

Nolan does two good movies, ???

P.S. I can't believe marlon wayans was originally cast to play robin, instead we got O'Donnell.

except not at all. WB ditched Burton because the 2nd movie underperformed and they didn't like the direction of the movie...while Nolan's 2nd movie is setting box office records and getting tons of critical acclaim.

BTW, 98% of the stuff you hear about a sequel in the next year will be BS

Let's not forget about the TDK rumors.

Hugo Weaving as the Joker!?

Robin Williams as the Joker!?

Paul Bettany as the Joker!?

Christian Bale as the Joker?!

Ninja Scooter as Nice Coat?!

Almost certainly fake but I like this rumor about Angelina Joliee.

The actress, who gave birth to twins earlier this month, is reported to have already made enquiries with film executives about playing the part. Julie Newmar, who played the feline villain in the 1960s Batman television series, said Jolie would make a fantastic Catwoman should the character be reprised. Ms Newmar, 74, said: "Angelina would own the part. My industry friends tell me she has already made enquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest. Catwoman is Batman's one true love."

Joliee can do sexy and crazy excellently and I would love to see her as Catwomen. Sans that Russian accent she uses once in a while.

This reeks of bullshit. Also, I don't want some POS villain being forced into Nolan's next Batman script, if he ends up doing it.

As if Christian Bale and Heath Ledger aren't 'pretty boys' as far as the media are concerned. Depp isn't much different from them in that regard.

Personally I wouldn't mind it. Though I'm more concerned with how the Riddler is portrayed and how his presence effects the movie more than anything. I'd hope that they could really do some mind blowing shit given what the Riddler is capable of combined with Nolans direction.

He wouldn't have been my first choice for the Riddler, but Johnyy Depp certainly has the acting chops to play the character. He's one of the best actors in Hollywood and I'd love to see how he would mesh with the universe Nolan has created.

Exactly.

I always thought that if Nolan did choose to go the Riddler route, the film would be a series of smaller riddles solved throughout the film which all feed into a larger, grand finale, "holy shit my fucking mind is blown by how fucking clever that riddle is" riddle that is solved at the close of the film.

One that would become more incredible upon multiple viewings....

I knew they were worried aboutf the critics, but betman returns underperformed?

what will WB do if Nolan chooses not to do another one, or do one on their terms (time, direction, setting, etc...)?

Johnny Depp would be a great choice!

It's not like the talent in the film is low-key anyway, you've got Christian bale and Morgan Freeman for God's sakes, :lol

No. This is the thread we link back to when everyone considers Depp's performance - "Academy Award" worthy.

At this point they could cast Cedric the Entertainer as the main villain and I wouldn't care. As long as Nolan AND the same screenplay writers are the same it wouldn't fucking matter.

I just saw TDK and it just blows my mind how fucking good that movie is.

Not sure if I want Depp. The joker was sold on his perverse actions and mannerisms. With the Riddler most of the interaction between him and batman will be dialog. I want whoever plays him to have a strong voice that grabs you. I dont get that from Depp. I think they would be better off getting some no name from theater.

Depp is a really great actor...I love his diversity; from Donnie Brasco, to Fear and Loathing, he really can pull off a lot of roles. Take this clip for instance, from Once Upon a Time in Mexico:

and this...he and pacino were just awesome:
