I am just done reading Vento Aureo. Here are my thoughts.
As usual, its a really good story with a lot of fun and creative situations and fights. The characters are fun, the setting is fun, the villain is fun. Part 5 is a lot of fun.
But I believe it also didn't live to its full potential. I don't know the situation when this story was made, but it felt similar to part 2 in that it was mostly a medium to add exposition and backstory to the whole series. But contrary to Battle Tendency, its not as fulfilling with Giorgo Giovanna.
GioGio is a great character and, once again, a fun Jojo. And his ability is absolutely brilliant. But the story never felt personal to him. He is mostly there for the ride and to get to the top, but even then he is there more as the support of the team of Stand users he belongs to, rather than the heart or the head. Bruno Buccellati is by all means and purposes the true protagonist of this arc. The story is about him, the struggles are made around him, the best fights all happen with him front and center. So by the end of the story it felt that his story was robbed by GioGio. GioGio, as vital as he was to the story and the mission, just doesn't feel as someone you can't get behind, as a true leader or GangStar. So even if his resolution is nice, it doesn't feel completely earned. I'll talk about this a bit later, because first I need to talk about the setting and the villain.
So, the setting. Italy governed from the shadows by Mafiosi with supernatural abilities. Fuck yeah, brilliant, I want that. But... the setting went to fast on its mission to dethrone the Big Bad of the arc. You really don't get a taste of what is it they "do" until the epilogue, who actually has a "Mafia" themed episode. Really the setting is just an excuse to have the Big Bad be enigmatic and deserving of a beating, while also powerful enough to pose a threat and somehow explain Pornaleff presence. I really was expecting more of a slowly rising in the ranks to get the Boss, not a travel the land/Rescue the Chick story that feels similar in a lot of ways to Stardust Crusaders. I love Stardust Crusaders and I really liked Vento Aureo, but its still a bit disappointing how fast it escalated.
Before going to the Villain, lets talk about the supporting cast. They are all great. All of them felt like true co-workers who happened to become friends do to the bond of fighting together. Their treatment of Giorno as an outsider is believable, even if how they came to thrust him felt a bit forced, but I guess the idea is for Giorno to evoke the same "admiration" DIO used to evoke in people. The power of Charisma, so I guess its fine. Also was surprised by how well Trish was managed, showing she was not dumb and also really damn useful when the time came. Abbacchio, Mista, Narancia, even Fugo who got almost no screentime, they are all cool and given a lot of time to show off their powers, some of the best fights in the series for sure.
Now, to the main event for me. The Boss. This fucking guy(s). I had seen the memes but I was still not ready. I immediately grasped the concept when I read the manga, it pretty much worked like the concept of tha episode of Futurama when the time kept on jumping. It pretty much was The World but even more broken, because Diavolo not only could predict the future, but be the only one to be aware of how they got there. That is absolutely terrifying and disorienting. Other than his range it really had no weakness. His first fight with Bruno was just breathtaking, how Bruno rapidly grasped the situation and managed to save Trish by pretty much been 11 steps ahead. Woof, brilliant stuff. He dying yet not dying there was kind of a cop-out, he should have totally died there. I get it was necessary for later scenes to make sense, but damn it, from a story point perspective GioGio should have taken over there and then if he wanted to make this part his.
And here comes my main issue with the series: The way they beat Diavolo was just not earned. The Arrow giving secondary powers if it hits a Stands was really exciting because I wanted to see King Crimson get even more broken. All the Stands really, I wanted to see all of them get to the Next Level. In the final battle, all the characters switch bodies because of Pornaleff fucking up (lol, I guess some thing never change). And GG ends up switching with Narancia. So what happens then? Narancia is just killed. This was just such a cheap dead. Its explained in-context as "So sudden, so sad" but it was clearly just there so GG could get back to his body and proceed. And the final struggle to get the arrow is pretty damn cool. Both sides don't know how to deal with an out of control stand, and its very clever that the villain figures it out first. And its pretty cool how they actually beat him to the arrow.
But then GioGio just gets the arrow and gets the ultimate power and just MUDAMUDAMUDA the bad guy and wins. And thats it. He gets the exact power needed to completely overpower him. Very simple. Oh man talk about anti-climatic. Maybe its my fault but from JoJo I always expect a "Not quite yet" moment. How cool would it had been if Diavolo would have also succeeded and the arrow accepted them both? He was clearly capable of figuring out a way to get there, as we saw on his few battles. We didn't get to see our villain go to his full potential and that seems like a waste. It was like having Cell die in its imperfect form. It just felt like Araki really just wanted to get it over with.
All in all, I think this one is the weakest of the arcs I have read so far. It is extremely well done, absolutely beautiful and the characters are great, but the story and the character arcs needed more time to breath and to get us to really care about this characters. GioGio in particular lacked a personal attachment to the story and that kind of hurt its ending.
Now onto Stone Ocean, so far its amazing, lets see how it holds up!
