Am I one of the few people who has mixed feelings regarding this verdict? While I believe there are a lot of tabloid/click bait stories posted on Gawker's different sites, there are some good stories from time to time such as the ps4.5 article from Kotaku today. There will also be a lot of people who will lose their jobs with Gawker most likely going out of business.

On the other end, there's Terry Bollea, who appears to be a racist based on comments and Hulk Hogan, who has a reputation in the wrestling world for being a backstabbing politician in the locker room. While I felt like the guy's privacy was invaded, I don't really feel too happy about what appears to be a bad person getting over 100 million.

Here's a good article about the case http://www.capitalnewyork.com/artic...ds-hulk-hogan-115-million-gawker-looks-appeal

Gawker could appeal on paying the bond and then appeal to get the case overturned.

This is a great article. It really shows just how crazy the law is.

TL;DR:

1. Appeals court has history of ruling in favor of Gawker
2. Gawker doesn't necessarily have to come up with $50 mil to go to appeals
3. Gawker has been expecting this to go to appeals, so they likely would have already devised some contingency plan to come up with the necessary funds

It ain't over yet, folks.

You know we only found about the racist remarks after the lawsuit was set?

And how it was about Gawker's refusal to take down the video after a court order told them to?

Being against racism doesn't mean you encourage invasion of privacy by not punishing it.

Were his racist remarks not brought up in the trial? Aren't they the things that actually damaged his career/public perception of him?

The breach of privacy is clear, but saying that's what ruined him professionally and that it's worth a cool $115m is utter bullshit.

They don't necessarily have to pay the $50 million. They can get it reduced or even nullified If they don't have enough money.

The Florida appeals court is already siding with them and the 1st amendment's right argument. So most likely an appeal will happen even if they don't have the money.

That makes no sense... me putting up a sex video on a website against that person's will ... is a first amendment right.... fuck that if true .

Yep, anybody using this shitshow to take pops at Kotaku (who's staff had nothing to do with any of this at all, yet are some of the people most likely to lose out because of it) is pretty scummy.

Even if they're not Gators, they're dancing to a very crocodilian tune.

Schreier and Klepak spoke up in favor of Gawker publishing the piece outing a private citizen who just so happened to the CFO of Conde Nast. My sympathies for their plight are few, I assure you, and yet I feel completely validated in thinking so.

Yes, but such things became known due to the leak and sites like those under gawker's network posting it, this horrible racist asshole still is owed his privacy, Gawker fucked up when they were ruled to take it down and didn't, and in chosing to do so, everything is pinned on them.

Hogan being a horrible person doesn't magically mean Gawker is good, people have rights, horrible or not, we cannot take justice on our own hands.

Does Hogan deserve all the shit coming his way for being horrible? probably. That doesn't mean Gawker had the right to do what they did and by violating the law they're getting hit with what they deserve.

Everyone involved was horrible, but Gawker got what they deserved.

Yeah, it would mean that something like revenge porn would be protected by the first amendment which I'm pretty sure isn't the case

fighting game community? DOA fans? japanese animation fans? i'm sorry could you be more specific what part of a hate group i belong to?

dont be passive aggressive you can quote me directly. Totilo and his people have done shady shit in the past that's been well documented. Just because GGers hate on them for the those same reasons doesn't suddenly magically erase the gawker style dealings they partook in.

stop using GG as some sort of excuse or relief from culpation for the type of culture gawker had in its sites. It's not like gawker hasn't been at this long before GG.

Haha, ok. I mean, I don't even know what to say here.

Denton et. al. at the Gawker Mothership are all total shits and always have been, no one's arguing with you there. Like I said in the portion of my post you excised, they got what's coming to them.

But come on bro. Unrelated shitting on Kotaku with vague comments like "shady shit" that's "well documented", to justify mocking the loss of jobs by people not even connected to this court case? This just reeks of Gater bullshit. Even if it's not directly coming from that group, it's damn close enough.

This isn't really true http://patrickklepek.tumblr.com/post/124358392419/the-gawker-staff-wrote-a-today-objecting-to-the . You could argue they were complicit in it by working for Gawker but they didn't openly support anything.

Why are people worried about Gawker? The CEO has $300 million and Gawker is a cash cow. What's preventing him from paying out of pocket and recouping the costs from overtime clickbait?

Hogan might be a piece of shit racist, but it's kinda great to see the legs get kicked from under Gawker. Dirt rag of the Internet is brought down with the power of Hulkamania brother.

I highly doubt he has 300 million dollars liquid. He would need to sell substantial assets to cover this, probably most or all of his sites.

Keep in mind, additional millions of punitive damages have yet to be awarded.

and like i said, if they did the deed it shouldn't matter than some greasy GGers keeps retweeting it as if something is going to physically occur from it. They still did it. they still wrote it.

it's a bit disingenious, in my opinion, that just because GGers pointed it out it somehow doesn't count anymore.

look, i'm sad for the mail delivery person in gawker. i'm sad for the person that handles the food cups. i'm sad for the guy who takes care of the building. I am not sad that the corporation overall is going down.

If Fox News were to close down RIGHT NOW, i'm sure many people would be delighted and not saying "But but but the tea party is saying the same things you guys are saying, ARE YOU TEA PARTIERS?".

EDIT: also wtf does GG even have to do with this? let's drop that subject.

So a racist gets $115 million, and a family of websites people sort of don't like sometimes is about to go under, losing people several dozen jobs in the process; GAF celebrates.

What a joke of a sum. Seriously, wouldn't that basically put Gawker out of business? So this court really feels it's worth hundreds of people losing their jobs?

Yes, that's certainly how I interpretted your comment. And then you go on to say essentially the same thing again... not sure why you were surprised.

No, I didn't? What the fuck are you talking about? I literally said that Gawker deserved this. So unless you're saying I'm literally calling myself a Gater, what?

I said that if your immediate reaction it to shit on Kotaku writers, who are unrelated to this case, and specifically celebrate their potential loss of jobs with vague justifications, that sounds pretty Gatery to me.

If you can't separate those two then uh... Ok.

So holding racist views at any point in time nullifies a person's rights. Good to know.

Is this a joke post? Didn't it come out during the trial that Gawker Media makes yearly profits of $6m on revenue of $45m?

There's no fucking way they could handle a $160m bill, and they stated as such in the trial.

From The Richest:

In 2007, the Sunday Times Rich List estimated his wealth at £140m (approximately $290m) based on the sale of his previous companies and the value of Gawker Media.

So, who knows how much he can liquidate without affecting Gawker.

The punitive damages on top though, that might sink him personally.

I literally said in my first post that Gawker were a shit corporation and that my issue was with people celebrating Hulk and his win. My other point is that mentioning justice when a person's making money from destroying their own career with racist comments kinda destroys the concept of any justice taking place.

If the law worked then Hulk would get fuck all in damages and the people responsible at Gawker would suffer the consequences of breaching privacy.

Your version of the law means gawker doesn't get punished. Unless you can somehow put a corporation in jail?

What other punishment besides monetary could th courts leverage on Gawker?

Aureon

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
While an outlet that practically posts a sex tape with the aim of profit&defamation, and then defies a court order for little more than what certain corners of the internet could call "teh lulz", i'm still completely baffled by why a jury was involved at all in this.

I can understand penal cases, but civil?

Your version of the law means gawker doesn't get punished. Unless you can somehow put a corporation in jail?

You could reroute the vast majority of the monetary penalty to the state, i guess. Fines instead of damages.

lol, you're deliberately misrepresenting what just occurred in this comment chain. You took this opportunity to deliberately and specifically shit on people not even involved in this court case (Kotaku staff). Now you're walking it back and saying you're sad for those who are out of the job because of this, despite not being involved. But fine enough, I'm done here. You're tripping over yourself too much for this to even be remotely worth continuing.

Patrick Klepeck's twitter feed is filling up with smug underage anime pictures...

As much as I dislike Gawker, he doesn't deserve that. Just sucks to deal with the fallout :/

Hilarious to see people making sure to let everyone know what they feel about Hogan before commenting on the actual event. It's okay guys, you can enjoy justice even when it involves someone you think is "icky."

He deserves every penny.

That company knew exactly what they were doing was wrong, both legally and morally.

Just because he's a male celebrity doesn't make it ok.

Sort of don't like sometimes?

I hate gawker. They are a morally bankrupt lives ruining rag.

If you don't dislike them you must first hand-wave the despicable ethics violations or be totally ignorant of them.
