Where did our country go in the direction of handing out outrageous amounts of damages to plantives...$115 million dollars come on now...

Since he is a celebrity whose career has likely been ruined for some time as a result of leaking a private tape, it's not that outrageous to me. On the high side perhaps, but I bet he was making 1-3 million per year in promotions, endorsements, etc. prior to the incident that are not likely to return. Could be even more if the political backlash has also hurt his companies revenue.

They talk about this in the closing argument - basically, the damages were partially calculated based on the number of unique visitors that were driven to Gawker's site (I believe the number was in excess of 9 million), and how that related to valuations of similar sites (and writedowns based on lost unique visitors) from major investors. There's also the revenue it brought in from being rehosted on porn sites.

Then you factor in stuff like lost revenue potential, the personal damage it caused to his reputation and career, and the jury's anger at Denton and AJ for their flippant comments, and $140 million isn't that far off.

Like others said, it was just a matter of time. If Hogan didn't get them, the Conde Nast CFO or another aggrieved party would have.

@annamphillips:

The jury orders Gawker Media to pay Hulk Hogan $15m in punitive damages #hulkvsgawk

The jury orders Nick Denton to pay Hulk Hogan $10m. For AJ Daulerio: $100k #hulkvsgawk

The judge orders the Hulk Hogan sex tape sealed. #hulkvsgawk

Hulk Hogan right now, at Hogan's Beach Shop:

So after the judge apparently informs the jury that punitive amounts cannot financially destroy or bankrupt, and Gawker informs the jury that the penalties already incurred exceed the value of Gawker and A.J. Daulerio already has a negative net worth due to student loans, we get this question:

That jury really, really, REALLY didn't like Daulerio. Understandably.

So the judge said that the punitive amounts cannot financially destroy or bankrupt Gawker...yet they go ahead with $115M + $25M more?

So did the jury just ignore the judge's statement, and if so can the judge do anything about it? Or does the judge not give a shit?

You can't introduce brothers in one sentence and then just use the last name in the second sentence.

You're right, I didn't really want to use the other brother's name since he's the one who was smeared. Silly and pointless but that whole incident was so vile.

So how much actual money will Hogan get out of this when it's all said and done? $10 mil? $20 mil? Zero?

Wait and see if Gawker can even appeal. Given everything that's been said in this thread so far, it doesn't seem likely.

If I had to guess, probably 5-10 million in his hands after all his lawyers get paid, and Gawker files for chapter 11.

It's exciting to see Gawker get the Hogan Leg Drop, but let's not forget that Hogan is a racist piece of shit.

Also I hope this ruins Gawker and their quality subsidiaries get bought by better companies.

Note to anyone in journalism: If a judge orders you to remove an article you wrote, don't say fuck you and hide behind the first amendment. This might happen.

Looks like it's time for Round 2:
Former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan is suing Gawker again, saying the gossip website leaked sealed court documents that quoted him making racist remarks.

Hogan's new lawsuit filed Monday comes on the heels of him winning $140 million verdict against Gawker after it posted a video of him having sex with his then-best friend's wife.

Gawker denies that it leaked the sealed transcript to the National Enquirer. The transcript shows Hogan making several racist statements about his daughter's then-boyfriend. Once the Enquirer published the story, WWE severed its longtime ties with the famous wrestler.

Curious. Given the award that he's already been granted by the courts, what's in this for Hogan other than considerable risk? Is he trying to get Gawker to drop their appeal by burying them with legal costs?

I think he is just trying to bury them. His reputation is completely ruined now and since he isn't wrestling what else is he going to do with his free time?

Plus he's a giant self-obsessed piece of shit, as established.

Like, he would genuinely rather keep this incident in the public eye than let someone get away with "wronging him".

We should all follow hogans example and be sure to have a legion of hulkamaniacs, ready to bankroll our lawsuits.

He planned ahead.

Peter Theil is a libertarian, thin-skinned piece of shit.

And standing up to the rich and powerful is literally the most important thing a free press can do.
I mean he's a typical Silicon Valley shitbag but that doesn't mean that Gawker's not in the wrong

Just when I thought it couldn't get any more like a wrestling storyline, the freaking surprise return of an old nemesis. You reap what you sow, Gawker. Someone needs to modified the "it was me Austin, it was me all along" gif to Thiel.
