Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

I have one more question. How heavy is the box that contains the console. I may have to carry it on a bus or two tomorrow. I am also not that strong.

4.5 kg

edit:...or 6.5 kg. I'm not sure anymore, i had to weigh it two weeks ago for shipment.

Reading this eases me a bit, lol. I thought I was some kind of mutant freak from another planet or something because I absolutely love the gamepad, while apparently its largely been panned and is the first thing everyone seems to want dropped from the system. At the very least, I'm hoping the WiiU can do "decent enough" to make it last this gen. :-(

It's less that people don't like the Gamepad and more that they see it as an impediment to the system having a lower price point. Which... is probably true.

I like the giant controller, though. It's the best fit for manly man hands, like mine, since The Duke.

I love the gamepad too. It's almost everything I wanted from a VMU successor. Nintendo needs to emphasize its usefulness in games more and not just use it as an off-tv device.

Praise the DF overlords lol. If you live and die by their judgment then I guess that's fair.

Well, if you're trying to decide which version of multiplat games to buy, they're a pretty reliable source.

I mean, if you only have a WiiU, whatever. But if you have...pretty much anything else that has an AC4 release on it, you're pretty much better off going with that. If I remember correctly, the only one that was markedly worse than the WiiU version was the 360 version.

I got NSMBU/LU and Tekken! I'm a broke college student, though. I got a $25 gift card with it, but I'm waiting on a good sale to use it on another game.

I love this Wii U gamepad! It's just so cool, and it feels nice! Miiverse is fun, too. I downloaded the ZombiU demo, and that game is incredible! I definitely want to buy that game eventually!

My NNID is...you guessed it: kidtamagotchi

You should definitely get ZombiU when you can it's a great game, I know you said you don't have money to spend atm, but when you do get 3D World, and Pikmin 3 those are a few of the must have games on the U.

My NNID is the same as my user name also feel free to add me if you'd like

every version except the ps4 runs like shit anyway. might as well get off tv play. i had ps360/pc to choose from and i chose the wii u for that reason

I'd rather play on 360 than on the gamepad since the Wii U version runs at a consistently lower framerate, but maybe I'm crazy.

Splinter blacklist and batman origin analysis were really misleading about wiiu versions..dont know about other games

Van Owen: "Stop enjoying things I don't like."

Not really. I'm just saying you could have a better experience playing those games on an older, cheaper system.

If you like playing them on Wii U, great. Unfortunately poor versions of multiplatform titles on a more expensive system aren't going to have much appeal, as the market has decided.

And you would have the best experience on a PC. I don't understand where you are coming from or why even bring up the comment in the first place.

my point is, if i was worried about frame rate i wouldnt play it at all. even the ps4 or pc version. 30 with drops into 20 feels just as bad as 24 with drops to 18, imo

Beat the main game, unlocked star world. Curious how much more I'll go. I've done a lot most of all the stars.. but I really don't wanna do the flag pole crap...

Damn, you just missed a fantastic black friday sale for Zombi U at BestBuy. Selling it new for $15. I ordered a copy shipped to me and I don't even own a Wii U yet, just know this was one of the few games I was hinging to buy when I eventually do purchase.

Now just waiting for Capcom to do another MonHun sale on the eShop before I buy the system, as I really want that game digitally since I will likely I play it more than any other.

Though BB currently has a Buy 1 get a second 50% off on select Nintendo games. (Pikmin, Mario 3D World, and Zelda WW are the big Wii U games ready for that discount) Might jump on that even before I get the system as well...damn maybe I should just get that Mario bundle finally.

I agree. The PS4 version is the sweet spot in terms of playability and price entry.

i was just pointing out why someone would opt for the wii u version (gamepad) instead of the slightly better FPS of ps360, when the FPS is bad either way. i like your avatar by the way

Honestly I think the gamepad fills a need for the small amount of the market. I'm sure there are some people that have to share a TV with someone, but I think it's a relatively small number.

I doubt you would go into Need for Speed: Most Wanted threads telling people to buy the Wii U (version), or Rayman Legends for example.

Your opinion about the Wii U is well known going by your post history, stop pretending "I just want the best experience for you" at least.

Edit: But whatever, don't want to start an off-topic discussion.

I wouldn't for NFS since it has less players online.

Legends I would recommend people get the Wii U version for sure if they already have a Wii U. I don't know if I could justify buying the system for it though when the other versions also run at 1080p 60fps.

I have one main tv in the house that I share with wife and kid. But I like the gamepad for more reasons than just off tv....

I'm planning on buying the WiiU version of AC4 with some after Christmas money for a couple of reasons.

First is for off TV play. I have two TV's, but they are often both taken by my wife and stepson so being able to play offscreen is huge.

Second, I want to support what limited third party development there is for the WiiU. I could purchase the PS3 version, but the overall differences are minor enough that I can live with a slightly worse (but still bad on either system) framerate.

Its a fantastic port and the off tv play option and specially the gamepad map make it much better than other versions IMO.

I bought AC IV on Wii U and I'm enjoying it. It's not unplayable as the DF analysis makes it. As neither the most of other 3rd party ports aren't. Until the DF analysis everyone in the next gen screenshots thread was amazed by its look on Wii U (for a 3rd party port), now it's shit because the gods have spoken. Oh well. I guess I'm in that minority who enjoys the hell out of the gamepad.

In terms of raw content, I'd say beating Bowser puts you at around 60%, but the bonus stuff is considerably harder, especially if you're going for all the stars, stamps and golden flagpoles.

As for AC IV, I bought and played through it on the Wii U. If I hadn't read about alleged performance issues after finishing the game, I never would have known. I just assumed that it ran about as well as the PS3 / 360 versions. The performance or visuals never struck me as subpar.

I just picked up Wind Waker HDazzlins.

Told myself I'll open it on Christmas morning so I actually have something to open.

...Nah, fuck that.

They're only a pretty reliable source for these things if the games sole differentiating factor are a few frames or pixels. With Wii U games, a whole other set of features and benefits gets introduced that, depending on the user, might heavily outweigh the benefit of 30 instead of 27 frames. This is what bugs me about this line of thinking. DF is a perfectly valid point of reference for last gen stuff where all there was were PS3, 360 and PC versions with identical features, UI, inputs. This is simply not the case anymore. You also need to be aware of your own priorities. DF makes a big deal about framerates over anything else. So much so that the superior resolution and lack of screen tearing gets sidelined over a slightly more steady framerate during cutscenes.

Not really. I'm just saying you could have a better experience playing those games on an older, cheaper system.

Again, passing off personal opinion as universal truth.

Do we know that games supposedly suffering bad framerates, suffer the same amount when played solely on the gamepad (meaning a lower resolution to render)? Has this been tested? Can this be tested? If it doesn't impact the framerate, i would indeed think the CPU is the culprit.

Also, DF always seems to test only non-gameplay parts (real-time cutscenes) for AC4. I've seen in the past, that the difference during gameplay is smaller. I can't remember which game it was, ME3 or AC3 i think. I know that cutscenes can be compared 1:1 and gameplay is never exactly the same, but if you play for 10 minutes, you get an average that might be more interesting.

At long last I pulled the trigger and bought the Mario Wii U bundle from Gamestop online. Should be arrive at my house soon today. Hopefully I don't regret my purchase but I'm looking forward to it

Once you get it, go return/trade/sell Mario U and pick up 3D World instead.

Just a suggestion...

NSMBU is the best of the New series. Period.
Is it really? I sort of wrote it off because the impressions I got were that it was worse (except for being in HD). I remember hearing it called uninspired, and also that the music wasn't good.

New-series music always sucked. That's nothing new.

The game is the best of the New-series. You heard about it being uninspired from people who proclaim Rayman Oranges/Legends superiority because of its hand drawn art.

Sorry if I sound dumb here, but I honestly don't know much about this stuff.

1. If the Wii U's CPU kinda holds up with 360/PS3 despite the PS3/360's CPU being 3.2Ghz vs Wii U's 1.2Ghz, would the CPU be better than 360/PS3's if it was also clocked at 3.2Ghz? Or would it not make a difference?

2. Would overclocking the Wii U's CPU to I dunno like 1.7-1.9Ghz make a difference on games?

3. Could that even be done? Would overheating be an issue at those clock speeds?

Just wondering if that should be something Nintendo should seriously consider doing.

While I agree with you to some extent, NSMBU and Luigi U are still great and should be held on to.

In terms of level design it's top notch, and the visuals benefit a great deal from being in HD. What really makes it for me is the connected, Super Mario World style world map, though.

Music is, alas, rather WAH-riddled, but there are some nice tunes.

This has no place in this thread. Go into the Espresso CPU thread for this kind of talk and leave it out of here please.
