Just finished Halo 1 and..

???

The last level was loads of fun. The warthog run was especially good (though the framerate really took a dive at times)...

I suppose your complaints are a due to a lack of skills on your part, though. ;)

No, it's about:

1) having to do the same boring thing four times over when it should have been done in one go (firing the rocket into the tube is so star wars..)

2) the framerate in the warthog run was so horrible that I died twice in the hangar while battling an elite, I fell into a part of the hangar that obviously I was not meant to (because it was flat-ish all around) and almost punched my TV.. games whould not run at 5fps

3) the warthog run had really cheap tricks going on, there was this one part where you had to run over a bunch of black grunts with fuel rod cannons and if you didn't have enough speed their rods exploded taking you out too which I thought was particularly stupid.. also there's this one jump where you fall into a tunnel below - sometimes even though you make that jump you autodie for no reason at all. Teh frustration..

You didn't do the exact same thing 4 times, though. While the concept was the same (fire rocket into tube), each tube was a different challenge. What's the problem?

I don't recall framerate troubles while on foot. Of course, bad framerates suck, but they don't necessarily ruin a game. Vampire Bloodlines has some truly major performance issues at times (no matter what your PC is), but I'm still loving it (more than Half-Life 2, actually).

Dirty things? What? Such as your lack of skills?

Ah well, kinda funny though...

The prequels of the two big FPS games this year both had poor ending levels (according to some people, anyways). Xen in Half-Life was pure shit...and it seems that some people dislike the final level of Halo as well (I enjoyed it, but hey...). Then, the sequels are relased...and both have major cliffhangers at the end. >_<

At least Snake Eater reminded me of how good an ending can be...

Ladies and gentlemen an honest to goodness weaksauce gamer. The last level in halo is one of the best in all gaming. For your lack of leet gamings skills hang your head in shame and go to a corner where real men gamers can point fingers and laugh at you.

Why did you even do the jumps or any of the fighting? I just avoided anything that was dangerous and made my way through as carefully and as fast as I could. I would like to know why they built an extreme warhog track inside the Pillar of Autumn in the first place though.

I just beat Halo 1, for the first time ever, on Heroic a few weeks back. The level design didn't even bother me even though I knew all they did was cut and paste rooms together. The only section of the game I thought was boring was the extended parts with The Flood. For the first hour I enjoyed shotgunning them dead but after that it just got far too repetitive.

Still after a play through the game it gets an easy and solid 9/10 from me.

Halo has the worst level design in the history of FPS. The single player mode of the original is completely average at best.

I thought the same thing when i played it the first time.

Doesn't it also open up into a canyon at one point as well? I bet that track is longer than the whole of the Pillar of Autumn as well.

Everything on the Halo itself is excellent. The rest isn't as inspired.

Loved it all. Most of the game is on Halo, but there are two ships - one human, one covenant. They were ships, man. Not too many crazy things to do with'em, but I found the combat in both to be fun.

Yeah, as did I. The simple act of mowing the enemy down in Halo is fun. If all it was, was a open room with a bunch of weapons and enemies it would still be fun as the core experiece is very satisfying.

it's probably not an "extreme warthog track" inside the pillar of autumn, but probably a freight/equipment access way.

But yeah, the way it's built they wren't gonna get that much equipment in from there other than warthogs :lol

Oh and if someone is pained enough by the engine room part of the stage to hate it, it's because they suck balls and are wasting too much time on the enemies. the name of the game here is shotgun and run. shotgun and run. shotgun and run. You shouldn't even need to head back to the armory. I'd blow those 4 vents so fast the scripted speech events were running late.

The last level wasn't particularly outstanding, since it was so DIFFERENT from the other levels. After building up your combat skills in so many different scenarios...to have the last level be a Dukes of Hazzard-style run was kind of a disappointment.

I'd like to know why they built in all the rolling hills...as well as the jumps :)

I thought it might have been the engine exhaust but at the end of it is a space craft.

well I might be remembering wrong since I dont have my xbox anymore, but doesn't Cortana call it the main dorsal access way or something?

I didn't like the Warthog run. The designers had the player spend most of the game honing a particular set of skills, then threw in something that's completely unrelated to those skills as a final challenge. I never really spent much time in the Warthogs up until the last stage, mainly because a) I felt they controlled like crap (I hated the physics on them in Halo 1), and b) there was no real impetus for me to drive one when I could generally be just as successful walking. You just weren't given much reason to get good at driving the stupid things. Then I get to the end, and instead of a massive gunfight that puts the skills I spent the rest of the game practicing to the test, I'm suddenly playing 'Warthog Rally', trying to drive this weirdly floaty brick of a vehicle through an obstacle course at about 5 fps. It's sort of like playing a fighting game, only to discover that the game suddenly turns into a scrolling shooter for the fight against the last boss. Halo was far from the first game to do something like that (Michael Jackson's Moonwalker comes to mind, with its craptactular pseudo-3D shooter boss fight at the end), but I sure hope it's the last. :p

Heh. I remember actually asking that question out loud when I was with a group of friends playing that co-op. They gave me blank stares and didn't even answer me. :(

It was a warthog track too because at the very beginning there was a warthog parking lot.

The warthog run is a lot more fun in co-op mode, where you can have a buddy man the turret and blast enemies out of your way. Almost like it was meant to be played that way...

I would actually think it would be more fun to race in two different warthogs in coop..

I understand what you mean, but I don't agree that the warthogs controlled badly and I don't agree that the game doesn't give you ample oppurtunity to practice with them. I've been able to get the warthog into places that most people would think the vehicle could never go.

The Warthog handles like a dream. The controls have a learning curve, sure, but once you understand them they are perfect for driving-without-thinking. The last level of Halo was one of the best levels of gaming I've ever experienced. The first time I ran down that hallway I was in co-op and me and my buddy kept helling "holy shit" at the crazy jumps and winding paths (read: narrow cornering) we had to do. The weight of the Warthog was absolutely perfect for what you needed it for in every situation. In Halo 2, however, it feels like the Warthog has an effective weight of about 3/4 of the Halo 1 Warthog. Makes some slam maneuvers not work at all anymore.

Is my copy of Halo glitched or something? People always say the framerate in the last level "takes a dip in places" but in my game, it was literally running at 5-15 fps about half the time and was unplayable at parts.

My experience exactly. Especially near the end where there are lots of explosions (read: particles..) the framerate is definitely below 15, sometimes even 5.

I still think it wasn't that good a game. I mean it was good 90% type good but not the second coming of christ as some would have u believe

Loved Halo 1 completely and utterly. Even moreso, now that I have Halo 2 as a comparison. The warthog run was vastly more satisfying than the Tartarus fight, and felt like it actually rewarded skill and daring. Stuff exploding, flood everywhere, great stuff. If it has a failing, it's that there isn't anything else like it in the game, so you don't really have an opportunity to develop the skillset (as another poster mentioned) until you reach it. Beating that level with a friend on Legendary Co-Op for the first time was a genuine Fuck Yeah Gaming Moment.

I even dig the Library. Straight up shooting goodness.

IAWTP I don't get all the libarry hate. Everytime 343 said I'll be right back it was like "oh shit" time especially on the more difficult levels.

I loved The Maw on Halo: CE, one of my favorite levels in the game. The first time I beat it and after the warthog run ended I just stared at my TV in awe with mouth wide open as I watched the Halo explode.

Just want to make sure you really know what 5 fps looks like. Based on your comments, I don't think you do. I was getting TERRIBLE framerates in Vampire, and I was thinking I was running at sub-10 fps. However, when I checked it out, it was actually around 18 fps.

The last level is sweet, especially on co-op, nothing beats taking the warthog and racing it while leaving your partner behind. :lol

Framerate takes a hit, but the game slows down as well so it's nowhere near unplayable. Not even frustrating..makes it even easier to control. Everything that happends during the ride is scripted too, so you just gotta find the good path and take it everytime. On legendary it's very good because I always had only a few seconds left on the timer before it was over everytime I tried it. Good stuff.

I thought it was a great ending. They still gave you a final FPS challenge by forcing you to aim the rockets while getting attacked by flood, and surviving all the white elites and grunts. Sure the warthog is required at the very end, but there were multiple opportunities to get used to it throughout the game.
