I love it when I get an unexpected long weekend!

I'm in Canada but my client is in the U.S. so we follow their holiday schedule. I just found out right now that I get Monday off! Bless you Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Bless you.

same here. My company (consulting firm) doesn't have Monday listed as a holiday, but I found out this morning that my client (a bank) in fact does get it off. That means no work for me on Monday!

I work for jews but since I am not black I do not get the day off.

I don't think you have to be black to take MLK Day off, they're not going to say stop you if you want to celebrate. I doubt some office is going to start telling people what days they can take off based on race, that's lawsuit material right there. Some people are going to have to come in no matter what, and some places make you ask for today off ahead of time. I sure as hell don't want to go in...

Damn, they got your ass. Tell them your dad is black and then start screaming about racism, they'll give you as much time off as you want.

They really shouldn't do stuff like that, everybody should get the day off. Of course not everybody can be away from work today, but they shouldn't let some people just slide because of race. I know my mom use to take days out of her vacation if she couldn't get MLK day off.

Still, my office is down to about 10% staff up until and including Wed., so it's the next best thing to a 5 day weekend.

(Jeans, sneakers, and a very slow, relaxed workflow.)

I had the option to take off, but I declined to exercise said option. Instead I came in and get paid time and a half, plus a free floating holiday to take on the day of my choice. Not too shabby.

I had to work today....damn the space program!

...but in all fairness, we get to use our missed MLK day as one of our 6 or so working days off for Xmas. In fact, all we get are Thanksgiving, Xmas, 4th of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day.

And you know what the suckiest part was? Explaining to every person who called me on my cell at my desk why I was at work and didn't have the day off so the company didn't sound like a group of racist b*stards or something.
