PS3 got a price drop in the first 7 months and it wasn't at a break even point.
It didn't get a pricecut, they simply offered a different build entirely.

It was definitely an impulse buy, i was daydreaming of playing FFIX on it and then i came across a used one, like new, on a store and BAM, all reason gone out the window.
Im hoping that sony invests more on the platform but thinking about a big lineup on E3 2013 being overshadowed by the Orbis announcement is kind of a given.
The hardware really is amazing, fingers crossed!
There's no OT anymore, so, can i ask for some cheap recommendations here?
So no one else remembers the rumors that the PS3 would be discontinued in 2007? This is Sony we are talking about, they wouldn't kill off an entire platform unless it was a desperate move. The Dreamcast failed because the majority of third party developers such as EA went to work with Sony, and the PS2 easily eclipsed all sales from there on out. You had a machine that could play DVDs, and was starting out easy with the success the previous console earned.
I agree on Sony not killing off the platform though. What are people thinking?
It was. When the price was announced people were happy, many expected a bigger pricetag.
3DS outsells Vita 47-to-1 in Japan
The portable console war in Japan has always favored Ninendo's 3DS over Sony's Vita, but never quite like this.
Last week, the Vita hit a new all-time low in the country, selling only 4,021 units. By comparison, the 3DS sold nearly 47 times that many, at 187,077.
The numbers only tell half the story, however: 3DS sales were bolstered significantly by the release of Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which debuted at number one on the charts with 721,786 copies sold.
Still, it's clear that Sony is having a very difficult time selling anyone in the country on the Vita, and a lack of desirable software in the region isn't helping matters. The Vita had no new releases last week, and none of its games appear in the top 30 chart. There are, by comparison, fourteen 3DS games.
For a closer look at the numbers, last week's Japanese sales charts are available here.

There's plenty of ways Sony could fix this. Sorry to play as broken record here but the most obvious one is just get Monster Hunter on there. They could also do a Price Cut, or try to get other popular Japanese franchises like One Piece, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, etc.

As I see it there are basically two options to save the platform.
1) Massive price cut
2) vita phone/tablet relaunch
The only way I could see Sony really salvaging the Vita is cutting the price by $100 immediately and money hatting some major third party titles.
You say that like it's oh so easy.
Why would publishers put those games on a system that barely sells when they could put them on 3DS which sells several times more? There are so many 3DS' sold already that it's extremely close to overtaking the PS3!
What's a price cut going to do without the software that people want?
Surely people who were undecided about buying one would me more likely to if they have a library waiting for them? The ratio of people owning a vita and ps3 is almost 1:1 anyway so ps3 owners are who they should be targeting.PSN+ isn't going to do anything for the system's sales. The people who think it's an amazing deal would buy a Vita anyway because those games are very appealing to them. It's a nice gesture to those who own the system though.
Not to pick on you specifically, but people really need to divorce themselves from this thinking.
Vita has an endemic problem - nobody on either side of the globe wants to develop for it. It's a guaranteed money sink.
Considering this, how much would Sony realistically have to "moneyhat" in order to get the system rocking in either territory? I assure you the answer would be north of "more than Sony would ever want to pay". There is no one franchise that will jump start Vita sales in either territory.
Sony is better off keeping to their internal studios and hoping that one of them can generate a hit that will start moving kit. Paying for exclusives that have next to no guarantee of being long term successes on the platform is a great way to turn a console that Sony says is making them money into a turd.

You basically reiterated my point. Any strategy Sony could have that would make the Vita more successful would also make the system just that much more of a poor investment. It's a total money sink. And I can pretty much 99.9% guarantee you that a Sony first party game won't help to significantly spur the system's sales.
a relaunch would indeed be the best choice, but not phone/tablet if you don't want to experience 1k weekly sales. I think Sony should FIRST get a big exclusive, or better, two, one for japan and one specifically for the west, then release a stripped down model at a much lower price. If they keep carrying the console as it is today nothing will save it

It's not that it doesn't have games, it's that it doesn't have enough games for people to justify buying a Vita. Needs a lot lower price, or games that people can only, or prefer to play on Vita. Neither seems likely, both issues being Sony's fault. The Vita is the only system I play. These theads lamenting "no games" started by people who don't own one are hilarious

Same shit as the PSP.
Sony portables can't catch a break, and the trolls are too lazy to come up with a new schtick for a new handheld. :\
Planning on picking one up next year after:
Price Drop
or
Hardware Revision
PS3 got the first price cut at E3 2007. 7 months after launch. You may be thinking of the 40gig which came out 6 months after E3 and shave a second $100 off the price.

I kept hoping and hoping that something "big" would happen, the PS plus stuff is nice sure, but its for games that are now a yr old and nothing new coming out. Anyway decided to sell mine, no use for it. Was literally sitting and collecting dust. Lesson learned, never buy a handheld unless it's from Nintendo, I went through a vita and a psp and both were great tech sure, but huge disappointments. Won't be doing that again. I don't like the trolls and stuff, because hey, Sony went balls out and made great hardware, software support and what's been going on with the console is horrible. I hope they prove me wrong, but can't see that happening
Sony would be stupid to announce a discontinuation of Vita right before the holidays.
It will happen sometime in the new years when they turn all their attention to PS4/Orbis. People will refer to this thread when the announcement hits, I'm sure.
Why does the phone thing keep being brought up? I thought they brought out a PSP-like phone and it bombed.God Sony would benefit from getting Monster Hunter back
Or a phone launch
or both.
Are you blaming Sony's customers for not finding a reason to buy their handheld? The obligation is on Sony to make people want to buy it!What people or the mainstream "Justify" is mind boggling. In a nation willing to spend more than that on "off brand" phones or cheap tablets, people have the money, they are willing to spend it on certain items without justification but on others they will bring up an excuse.
You are correct sir, I didn't even remember that bit.
It is all subjective. So whether the "games" are appealing or the "price" is a barrier, the "No games" blanket statement is simply subjective opinion.

In my view alot of what happens on this forum seems to be drivin by comparisons between Sony handheld and nintendo's. I doubt anyone is on the fence when it comes between a decision of the two because the offerings of each company is normally very different in terms of tone and overall experiences.
Didn't take long to point out an example.

Wouldn't they need to create an entire new OS to be able to run Vita games and still be able to receive calls/texts? Can't imagine a non Android/WP/Apple phone OS would be very appealing. Not that I understand that much about phone software ;PYou are probably talking about the xperia play. It was a outdated phone both in software and hardware, don't know if it bombed though.
Had nothing to do with the PSP.
The reason a phone would be such a good business decision is Sony could subsidize it thorough a contract, making it cheaper for the consumer. Increasing their library if they run Android underneath for phones and texts, but also for the games it has.
Perfect.
Your anti-Sony schtick is really getting tiresome, and with this latest comment becoming more and more wacky. I mean, it's not like you can't back up shit or anything.PS+ is only a good service for the Vita if you have a decent sized memory card and we all know about those.

Just seems like a confused message to me. As in - could the vita part access any part of Android? Could the Android part see the Vita games? How would they run while still allowing calls/text etc?
I think we can both agree they need to do something. Unless they roped in a heap of customers on CoD's name before the shit reviews came out, I'd say their two big games for the end of the year sound like a bit of a failure.
