Why did the school have them run through fields and woods anyway? I thought they had a track or a gym or something.

We did something like that in my High School in VA. It was still school grounds but we had a gym and a field, they just had us run around the grounds and through some of the woods.
In high school during gym we had a running track and had to do laps. It really sucked.

The time I took PE in highschool it was Winter for the most of it so we ran most of our laps down in the basement halls.

I skipped that stuff by being in marching band since that counted as a gym class. I did what I like with music and got in good shape from all the training and actual marching. Good times...

Marching band is best band. (Percussionist here)
Interestingly enough, Physical Education wasn't a requirement from the point I got in high school to the point I graduated. Literally, it wasn't required just for my 4 year span.
