Katawa Shoujo |OT| (VN, Free, Waifus, etc)

Oh, so disabling it doesn't really do anything? Never mind then.

1. I didn't want to have to play as a boy.
2. Reading one of the reviews made them sound awkward, and I point back to number one.

I think in some cases, the scenes really add to the overall emotional impact, but I can understand not wanting to play as a boy if you're female.

hmmmm just started shizune route. Getting a lot of Phoenix Wright vibe while chatting with Misha ;)

Just got 100%, thought it was incredible. The order i went was Hanako>Shizune>Rin>Lilly>Emi. I can't say which one i prefer, they are all awesome in their own way. I do feel like Shizune's route goes in some pretty weird directions, but it turns out alright in the end. Teared up countless times, smiled even more etc.

The music was very good, i don't think there are many duds among the tracks. Some of them are very awesome, stuff like "The Student Council", "Ah Eh I Oh You", "Nocturne", "Hokabi" "Standing Tall", "Parity" and "Afternoon". Those 7 tracks (at least) will stay right at the top of my winamp playlist for the next long time.

There's probably nothing else to say that hasn't already been said, other than i kind of wish there was more of it now. It's not unlike me to feel a little sad when i finish a game i really liked though, had similar reactions at the end of "Demon's Souls, SMT:Nocturne and Ever17".

edit: Reading through some of people's reactions, i love how relatable the game is, in so many different ways. Hanako's route especially hit home for me, having struggled with pretty extreme social anxiety my entire life (2011 was the year i turned the development from a negative one to a positive one)

Yeah, i have to say this is a definite 10/10 for me. Blows everything i've played so far of this genre(not too much, admittedly) right out of the water except for Ever17.

Would inject a spiritual successor or something like that straight into my veins without question :/

This game got a write up on tigsource.com. Pretty meh article, half of it is talking about the sexual content. But holy mother of god the comments. I want to kill myself.

OK, I didn't enjoy the Emi route at all. Were we supposed to know what happened to her from the beginning? Because it was pretty fucking obvious. And anything involving sex was turgid.

Sometimes this game has great writing but the Emi route was a terrible example of this. It was just dull, and I didn't enjoy that character one iota. It wasn't all bad- the nurse is a cool character, for example- but yeah, I didn't feel it at all.

Probably gonna try Shizune tonight.

You are gonna abhor Shizune's if you didn't like Emi's.

Hmmm pretty far into Shizune route. MIght be low expectations, but I'm really liking it. It does feel like the toughest route to write. I think they tried a little too hard with the dad though.

On a side note. Are there Braille and sign language for different 'languages' or are they universal?

Braille is an interpretation of the Latin Script alphabet, so it would spell out words but you would need to also understand the language they are written in. Languages with different alphabets require different Braille systems. There are loads of different sign languages and it mostly depends on the region you live in. Don't know everything about the differences between them, but from what I understand they can become fairly incompatible.

The point of Emi's route isn't the twist because that shit is visible to freaking Lilly, man. But if you don't get those feels you don't get those feels.

You're not obligated to wank to them.

I have to qualify this. It's not just that you're not obligated. You can't. You're physically unable to.

Unless you're some kind of monster.

It's known colloquially as "Katawa Dick". It's like erectile dysfunction, but with feels. It's actually theorized on the Katawa Shoujo forums to be caused by emotional exhaustion much in the same way that new recruits in boot camp have a huge loss of sex drive due to physical exhaustion. Enjoy your No Fap Forever - 2012 Edition.

I just thought it was dull, and irritating. Like, you know what's wrong with her from minute 1, but nothing else really happens bar the two of them getting annoyed about Emi's attitude to getting close. Poor execution, basically, as it felt like a grind. Made for a nice ending though, when you finally get to the point.

Lily's route had a fair bit going on, hence why I really enjoyed that.

Got to the Summer house scene in Lilly's route.
I love you! I love you! I love you! Hisao! Hisao! Hisao! I love you Lilly! I... Love you Lilly.... I love you... Lilly... You already said that Hisao....
Cripes, I was just cringing the entire time, and was desperately hoping it was all just some dream sequence, that shit was just blargh :l

What's funny is someone on GAF pointed to that as a shining example of great dialogue in games.

That part made me bury my face in my hands, too, but I can see how people could be taken by it. The music and the art set it up to be a very dramatic scene, and if you get swept up in those the writing is liable to get a boost. Kind of like intellectual beer goggles.

Yeah, i was getting ready for some emotional stuff until that happens. But pretty much like you said KO, the setting ends up carrying the writing, soo I didn't judge to much.

Nah, I get that. Sweeping vistas bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun, a tender embrace, punctuated by the ephemeral whispers of a fleeting zephyr, all backed by Innocence and Romance in Adante II, the setup is certainly evocative, but god damn that dialogue needed to be launched into the sun. Hisao is so stilted too,

"We're a couple of right old fools aren't we?"

Is he from the 40's? Ugh...

I want someone to fandub that entire scene and sell it to me, cause... I just can't... I can't guys. I'm sure it gets better, but man, I really felt like they pissed that opportunity away

Ohh, by the way Ringo, I just got to Act4 on Rin, I must say, I have never shed manly tears and hated Rin with a raging passion of sadness at the same time.

It gets better. The understanding and level of commitment they have towards one another is really touching. Through thick and thin, for better or worse. That's them in a nutshell

iirc, Lilly's route was the author's first foray into writing. @bold I know that feel, bro.

I don't know how Hisao does it man. If I were him, I'd be filled with insanity and thrown myself out the atelier window.

We've all been there. Love is blind
sorry Lilly

Hobo - Even so, I can't believe that made it through proofreads and edits, I can understand floodgates opening to swell the tides of an emotional outburst, but that dialogue just did not read well... At all. The redundancy of the dialogue should have been reigned in, and Hisao's narrative should have carried more of it... Or time pirates should've abducted her. Anything.

Well I'm sure I'll be wrapping up Rin tomorrow, officially ending the good ends for all girls. If I feel like it, I might go back here and there to get the rest of the endings for a 100% completion and give my 2 cents on the game.

Trust me, I'm not arguing with you there. Just providing perspective.

Here's a random thought. Why didn't Lilly figure out what happened when Emi runs into Hisao for the first time? She seems to know Emi and that she disregards the "no running in the halls" rule. She should hear the distinctive sound of Emi's running legs at a fast rate, and then a thud and the sound of two people falling to the ground, Hisao says "ouch," Emi apologizes and says "I wasn't watching where I was going" and "I hit you pretty hard."

Just a little thing that bothered me when I first played.

edit: Lilly probably doesn't necessarily know what Emi's running legs sound like, but everything else should have tipped her off.

^ Considering that she's able to pick out Akira's voice from the din of a crowded street in her route and yet not pick out Emi in the aforementioned scene, I'm going to chalk it up to inconsistencies due to having different writers.

I think I'll stay away from that...

I wish I was as smart as you. Instead I will post this choice comment here so everyone can share my pain.

Spoilering for sheer offensiveness.

A video game about having sex with vulnerable cripples is pretty darn creative! I SHOULD be looking for girls with disabilities, never would I have thought to do so, I mean if they don't have legs they can't run from me! Personally I think they should be covered in feces too, and if you were open-minded you'd agree to this. We can all share our disgusting fantasies and indulge within them, it's fantastic that we can all share and express ideas in this medium.

If you sad miserable lowlifes cannot appreciate this piece of fine art, you can turn off the sex scenes. I mean they're the whole reason anyone would play, but the characters are really deep. See they say a lot of words, stuff about emotions, lots of words I skimmed just to get their clothes off. Good stuff.

Overall Katawa Shoujo is my favorite trend I ever hopped on, and even with the porn off if you can't appreciate it, whatever! If you don't like it why are you saying anything? It's 2012, you're supposed to keep conflicting opinions bottled so things like cripple porn can be widely appreciated since nothing negative is being said on it. Ponies, cripple girls, furries, what a fantastic world we live in today. Katawa Shoujo gets a solid 10/10, it's a must read!

Ah, I forgot about that. And wasn't Act 1 written before the others?

Yeah it was, but like I said, I'm surprised the editor didn't catch those inconsistencies in proofreads.

Anyway....

I loved that spoilered troll from the link. Especially since anyone who has actually played KS knows that the sex scenes are about as erotic as eating oatmeal with your grandparents. That and Emi is the fastest thing on no legs, so she can indeed run away from your flagrant advances. I also find the insinuation that disabled people can't be viewed as desirable hilariously dehumanizing, because the second you lose your hearing or an arm, you're relegated to the lifestyle of a eunuch amirite?

Nah I get you. But Jintor can no longer be trusted. He must never know this.
I hope I eat crow when all's said and done

Man, I hope I get back in time from work to see Jinty's reaction to all this. It should be priceless.

Nah, I'm perfectly aware that Lilly's route is carried by intellectual beer goggles. I love shit like that.

Emi's route reminded me heavily of my last girlfriend...

That's the worst part by far. Calling a girl with no legs a "disgusting fantasy" equivalent to a girl covered in feces... that's just horrible.

The key here is familiarity. She's a lot more familiar with her sister obviously than a random classmate from school, so it makes sense that she can spot out her sister's voice and not Emi's.

hot, steaming, as melted butter slips into the cracks, drizzled with sticky sweet syrup OH GOD
I always thought it was more of a 'naughty' expression. Still, I'm sure they used it at least once for 'angry emi'.

Yea, they used it when
Emi told Hisao to get out of her house, made the moment a little more lighthearted than I think they meant to.
