Source Gamefront (interview by EGM).

Just the key details:
He says online gaming and related features will be the standard, they will have a storage media for downloadable contents,as long as it won't raise costs too much they will consider backwards compatibility.
Asked about the time advantage Microsoft will have this time he said he feels their strategy is the best also for third parties and customers and he suggested to think about what happened to consoles like Saturn and Dreamcast which came first on the market.

babelfished. I am confused :)

Kaz Hirai of Sony over PlayStation3-Strategie 05.01.05 - The current EGM led an interview with Kaz Hirai, which presidents of Sony computer Entertainment America, in which it concerns the PlayStation3-Strategie of the enterprise. The most important statements in the summary: - Hirai spoke in the past more frequently of the fact that the PS3 will bring a quantum transition to the player driving.

For the user such a quantum transition has different meanings: One refers only to the diagram, the other one only to the on-line plays, etc.. Thus it falls Hirai heavily to define this quantum transition exactly and it tries to explain this increase in output with colors: With the originals PlayStation one would have offered 4 colors, with the PlayStation2 is it to 12 and with the PlayStation3 should it 64 be. - on-line one will be more important, an integrated component of all coming consoles.

It compares this component with a Airbag: In former times a Airbag was in the car luxury and it was ok to have one. But today a Airbag is standard in all cars. Like that it according to its opinion also with the on-line abilities with the new consoles will be. - for down-landable on-line contents there is to be storage media, which are more favorable than at present with the PS2, where these data on the non removable disk are stored. - so long it will not limit considerable costs to cause or the function range, would not know it, why Sony should not insert downward compatibility with the PlayStation3. - over the possible earlier start of the Xbox toward at the end of Hirai says 2005: 'Wir do not make thoughts for us over it, who rauskommt first or last.

We have always to held, from which we believed, it are the correct plan - not only for us, but also for third offerers, trade and final customer. And if you back-look in history, they will state that we were never first at the market. Do you remember at the Saturn? The Dreamcast? That should be THOSE NEXT generation on-line console, and we saw, what happened.

Backward-compatibility with PlayStation 2 and PSOne (it should very well come with being backward-compatible with PlayStation 2 and it can surely be done purely in software on PlayStation 3, their Next PlayStation or PlayStation Next was shown earlier supporting Blu-Ray ROM, DVD-ROM and CD-ROM as well as the specific DVD-ROM and CD-ROM formats used by PlayStation 2 and PSOne respectively) is a must :).

looks like they are understimating microsoft

xbox 2 won't be a "new dreamcast" at all, they just have too much money to fail

Trust me, this is just PR.

They are not underestimating Microsoft and Xbox 2: of course they cannot go out and say "mmmhhh... yeah... Xbox 2 looks really good... the SDK is very competitive, what a abttle we are expecting, etc..." as that would look very bad.

There are some cases in which that line is really showing how the company feels about the competitor, but AFAIK this is not the case (luckily) ;).

Yes because the only reason these two failed was because they got released before both Playstations...

He has a damn good point about Xbox 2. 3rd parties are primarily enjoy those last two years of a generation when the media is still focused on the systems but the userbases are also large. Its their peak profit time and none of them are going to pass on that gravy. Only the biggest developers can afford to double dip to any great degree.

wow. late 2006 japan from the sounds of it.

How do you infer this?

I'm surprised there's still a question mark over backwards compatability. We need the full interview here :P

I dunno, they stated right there that they're focusing on 'online' content. The Xbox 2 is going to have a huge advantage by carrying over a good percentage of their Live! Userbase and get a jump start right out of the gate.

Sony has the problem of starting up a real online service to remain competative in that arena because I really can't see them not doing a yearly service like MS has. Unless you want to pay 10-15 bucks for every online game you own. A massive online rollout means patching, match making, they obviously want to start selling you music and movies. It's going to drive costs high enough that they won't be able to warrent letting everyone use it for free.

maybe Sony will actually serve their games.

you know, on real computers with tons of RAM and good connections. I'd pay for that.
