Nobody talks about male JRPG characters who look like girls

I think it's because we've moved passed it and had the discussion already? This was a common criticism of Japanese games like 10-15 years ago when Bethesda and Bioware games were dominating the RPG genre. Nomura in particular was constantly brought up and criticized for his androgynous male character designs in Kingdom Hearts. It's ironic that Western devs used to criticize Japanese male characters for being too feminine and then they turn around and masculinize every female Western character.

It's an unfortunate side effect of current day anime trends and the crippling fear of noses among current day Japanese. It's clearly something in the water, Anime used to have manly men.
Sakigake!! Otokojuku was a celebration of testosterone.

Exactly. We "went through this" with the Advent of Raiden and Vaan. This conversation is two decades old...

I am working hard here to understand but you will have to elaborate on what you mean and how it ties into japanese women ideal male traits
I meant women in general, their ideal man usually bellow their match, women make mistakes like we do and this is totally normal.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I knew without clicking this thread that it'd be either Fantasian or SMTV. Turns out, it was both!

Yup, one of classic anime's from late 60s/early 70s that is very well known around the world has proper manly looking protagonist, not to mention his enemies ;)

Oh i get what you are saying.

You cant date anyone normal in todays world sadly.
Todays women are the most useless ever.
They cant cook, they cant clean, they lack any maternal instinct, they lack showing any affection or love or support.
Todays women are all about image and materialism.
They are not faithfull they are full of themself , demand the world with little to nothing to give in return.
Todays women jumping from dick to dick from guy to guy. Once they are done with you they leave you hanging and alone.

The set up is, they show their fake side , they lure you in, they give the illusion you mean anything to them, but once they demasculinized you, dehumanized you, turned you into an emotional wreck cuz they will never tell you you do well or you are loved or anything, once they took everything from you, they hit you with the usual you are shit you suck bla bla bla and then they move on.

Man i cant even tell you how many men i know whos wife left them INCLUDING THE KIDS and moved on to another relationship.

Men fault is they are giving everything up for a woman.
Men have low standards as they are iver commiting and are willing to stick it out with the worst ones.
Men have to start having self esteem, and pride, and most of men should think highly of themselves and not cave in to this fake idea that todays women are looking for a real true meaningful relationship.

In short, a 5 out 10 woman thinks she is a 9 where as a 8 out of 10 guy thinks he is a 4.

It's rare to see a manly-looking protagonist for JRPG nowadays.
Matthew is a rare example of recent JRPG protag with manly look but the chadest amongst them is definitely Ike from fire emblem

Yep its one of the biggest turn off for me getting into jrpg. Talk about not knowing male or female. And then you have the manly of man Clive Rosfield in XVI and lo and behold, did not meet sales expectations. Curse genre.

This reminds me of working at a civilian DoD facility and the old guys getting mad at the guys aged 20-40 who had neck length hair
I suppose if people can get mad at short "male" hairstyles on women they can get mad at long "female" hairstyles on men too. Some people are just old fashioned.

Nobody talks about it because we know why character designers do it and while xenophobia towards Japanese games remains widespread, the casual homophobia directed at this trend is no longer treated as acceptable.

What some of you are talking about. Ancient Japanese culture used to be either you are beautiful or you are something else. Beauty could be the exact same between men and women. It was very androgynous ( remember that word that existed before gender wackos? lol )

Why you see so much of it today in anime and manga is because it was a big trend in Japan during the 70s with glam bands like ( some of you might have guessed!) David Bowie ! Whom has influenced Japans anime since the end of the 70s.

Ike was a pretty boy back in Path of Radiance. But yeah, Ike nailed that rugged look down.

Actually...yes, there were lots of talk about that, but so many years ago, and the mockery was more focused on male protagonists with bland designs or muscle bald ones trends in western videogames in the seventh gen. I still remember the complaining and jokes about the shaven Max Payne in 3 when it was announced, or the protagonist's design of the cancelled Prey 2, for example. And I could say more.

Guess it's not fair but facts. Guys made more feminine like in boy bands are still aesthetically pleasing. While girls made more masculine are less aesthetically pleasing.

Ya. It's just funny to me how "manly" men are so insecure though. Earlier this year, when I was in a trailer with a dozen uniforms and a couple dozen more outside, one conversation that came up between the men and women in the trailer was what conditioner everyone was using and skin care products and quizzing the guys on their knowledge of proper procedures for conditioner and face creams/masks. Not all the men could answer but a lot could and one in particular was one of the male lieutenants leading the event who liked to talk about his 12 gauge at home. He was very into his hair care and skin care products and routine. And on base you'll see plenty of neck length hair. And just as entertaining to me are the old boy prior military now civilian workforce bald men who love to show off pictures of when they did have hair after they left active duty. I swear 90% of the time they have neck to shoulder length hair in the photo and they look so longingly at the photos and then try to get everyone to go hang out at a VFW

Unrelated it's the same when I popped into a modern CoD complaint thread and it was all about how infantile and it needs to be straight laced like the military. Military photo op but outside of that it's mostly people that are effectively mentally still in high school because well, they still under strict control like they were under their parents and they love the modern CoD aesthetic. That's active duty men. The role models for masculinity from what I'd take from this sub and they're rarely grouches about what people get grouchy about in here. I wouldn't be surprised if half of active duty men under 30 watch a lot of anime. A large percentage probably playing Genshin Impact. A large percentage would happily say, "fuck ya I'm a weeb"

Speaking of Fire Emblem, FE7 had two characters that fall perfectly into this thread.

SERRA: Why do you have to be so horribly annoying! Just tell me, already!
LUCIUS: I'm not a cleric. I'm a monk, so... So......
SERRA: A M-Monk!?
LUCIUS: Yes...
SERRA: But...to be a monk, don't you have to... be a... Well...a guy?
LUCIUS: Yes. Yes, you do.
And the official artwork for these characters show just why Serra might be confused.

Lucius is the one with blonde hair. IIRC there are other characters in the game who trip over his look.

Asian cultures, Japan in particular, have been doing this for longer than I've been alive. And I was in line for the midnight release of dirt. It's part of their self-expression and clearly something that has appeal both natively and abroad.

As for "nobody talks about", you're either just starting to notice this aspect of their designs, in which case I'd recommend looking into historical media from these cultures, or, you're attempting to draw some kind of comparison to the critique of "female characters who look like men". For the latter, the critique is quite simple: it's a recent western ideological push from a vocal minority trying to force preference changes on people who are largely rejecting them rather than an organic, grass roots shift in the preferences of any one culture. People, by and large, don't enjoy being told what they should like by people who actively and vocally dislike them.

Have a great day.

I didn’t give this any thought until I asked my wife to play Final Fantasy XVI. She loved Final Fantasy X so much that we had a song play while she walked down the aisle. She told me she hates how the characters look like children on adult bodies. I was taken back. She went with me to two Final Fantasy concerts.

I always enjoyed the art style dating back to PS1. Sure, the genre has its cringy moments and the voice actors are enough to make you want to vomit. I still didn’t use that to stop me from playing JRPGs. To me, the faces resemble pixel art from the 16 and 32 bit generations. That loli stuff makes me gag, but I don’t quite understand casting the entire genre aside just because you think they’re all childish humans.

Im sidestepping the latter half of the comment because it basically is entirely subjective but... does something being old or well ingrained automatically make it sacred?

Beacuse if we are being consistent, a lot of folks are complaining about intergalactic MC having a shaved head and "looking masculine" but shaved heads and general androgyny(i dont think that fits here but im playing deviks advocate) are well established tropes in science function and dystopia fiction going back decades as well, its certainly not "recent".

If that is still fair to criticize in spite of its well worn status in that genre, then why should this trope of feminine male characters be above criticsm?

Hero, Van and Cloud are weird examples.

Anyhow the good examples are most of the time like 16 and man are like 3 years behind the curve. Weird way to defend weird western character design.

One of the reasons Guts from Berserk manga/anime/games is so popular is that he is opposite of ur standard japanese protagonist aka teenage womenly boy:

Both in looks and mindset, he is actually adult male.

Umm... ain't this twink the bane of that Guys existence in the story?

Edit: and for those unfamiliar this is a MALE character
