Nobody talks about male JRPG characters who look like girls

You say "these things are normal in Japan", or "we used to argue about it a lot, but now we've gotten used to it". Perhaps American developers have noticed this and believe it's possible to normalize it as well, wanting to include people like that in their games because there are people like that in America? Both cultures feel distant to me in this regard, but maybe we just need to accept them as they are? Or if we are going to criticize, shouldn't we criticize both?
I personally don't care about the character design.

If the game is good then I'm good.

Asian women dont like cool guys, masculine guys, guys with tattos , guys with confidence etc.
Thats why.

I was all over south east asia many times for years and this is my take away.

Asian women specificaly japanese women are very controling, very demanding, they want a little puppy they can spit on and take their money and control all financials etc.

Anime is stylized - so by its nature it can get away with more stylized and out there representations. You can't compare that with ultra realistic western games. And of course the women are way more feminine in comparison so you're still getting the contrast.

Also - there is a double standard. Deal with it. Men can lean slightly feminine and it can still look good. Think rock stars for example. Whereas women look bizarre and creepy when they put beards on and try to look like men. Things don't always go both ways.

Much earlier than some of those actually. Rose of Versailles started this trend which was made in 1972. It is also the father of Shojou manga. The point here is that the main character is girl who was raised as a son and has a romance with another woman. The Japanese audience loved the feminine male look and spawned countless more after.

How do I know this? Well Berserk. Griffith was inspired by Oscar which was that girl raised as a guy.
Ah, yeah, I just threw the names of old lean male characters but didn't really searched for them, Rose escaped me completely.

Lol who is this nobody guy? I was complaining about Victoria Beckham being feautured as the main character in FF12 back in the PS2. Is just that alot of the examples you show are standard beauty in Asia. Just look at boy bands fom J-Pop and K-Pop.

In the west, masculine women are not the standard beauty anywhere. Look at instagram for reference, or girls bands as well. Its just an obcession by western developers cuz they following DEI guide lines to not objectify women and not to make male characters, so what we getting is Female maculine woma'ams that play like a male character.

I don't see anything wrong with that, plus everyone already knows that Cloud is the best girl in FF7 and it's not even up for discussion. But it's an interesting topic, continue the discussion, I'll sit here and watch...

Asians aren't lonely, and when you always hanging out guess what, you spend a lot more than usual, I have no issues with that lifestyle but I prefer staying at home more often.

you're one of those fuck heads that complained about raiden back in 2001 lol
I'll say this. If you were a fan of MGS and a kid, getting MGS2 and finding out that Snake isn't in...most of it...was a huge letdown.

In retrospect we can see that it may have been a genius move we are told from the artsy fartsy side of the hobby, but I digress...

If you looooovvvveeeddd Raiden back then I'd guess either you skipped MGS1 completely or you were old enough by then to withhold your initial disappointment and allow time for the game to shine in its own light.

But BRUH, as a kid David Hayter made MGS MGS as much as the game did....also there was already a still better known Raiden in gaming so even the name fucked me up as a kid. It's like if they had made a Batman animated movie without Batman or Kevin Conroy in it, around when Phantasm came out. How could anyone not be at least a little disappointed initially if they were already a fan? I think a lot of people's first console was PS2 and they never knew what they were missing so they didn't have any frame of reference to be disappointed and were able to accept the game in its own right.

I dont think i made my point.

Japanese women once in a relationship or in a marrige, control the man and the household. The men have to give them all the money and their wage and the wife will give the man as much as she thinks he needs.
They want this obedient submissive feminin guy/man in their life so by their own culture they created this type of jaoanese male idol.

They will pick these anime type femalish guys over someone like me no matter how much better i look.

Sure they are down to fuck out of curiosity or dare but they would never pick anyone else who is more like a real independent man.

Not that i care as they are just awful in bed anyways plus i am now a family man.

It doesn't bother me. Japanese author do what they want and it's not out of activism or to sermon 'men".

People pretending it's the same as what woke studios do are either absolute morons or more likely activists themselves.
The same intellectual dishonesty and constant gaslighty at work.

The premise of this thread is a gotcha for stupid people who aren't capable to comprehend intent.

I mean yeah. The main character having the worst design (and often most boring personality) out of the entire cast is a pretty common JRPG trope.
Thankfully the rest of the cast usually makes up for it. Hell in games like Persona or DQ the entire story is often more about the other characters, as the main one is just a borderline mute standin for the player

That said, it's easier to get away with these sort of design decision with a stylized artstyle.
Your non white, short hair, tombish female warrior in non sexualized armor also looks better in anime format:

It's exactly the same. Everything else is just bias and insecurity.

Even more so, if you want "realism", and boy, some here live and die by that "realism" in western games, you NEED a physically strong woman to be able to punch those zombies and swing that sword in those shitty western games.

Japanese games automatically deny realism, while western games push for it. It's perfectly fine either way. I don't expect a 48 kg super-model chick (but with plus size breast ofc) to kick the shit out of the baddies in a game that strives for realism, it's beyond retarded.

I don't like it only when you get the feeling it was done on purpose so you can't tell or you get it wrong. SMT V being the most recent example.

Otherwise, Lightning or Cloud are perfectly fine.

Wat. The only one I'd possibly mistake as a girl is the one from Shin Megami Tensei V and I guess the one on the right but can't see their face and haven't played the game. Also do you not see what's popular hairstyle for guys these days. It's not a buzz cut. It's not a skin fade. It's like 2 inches+ length to neck long organized messy like the old emo and scene cultures without the angst or curly.

Women don't like perfect men, they prefer who got released from prison recently over business owners, they have the privilege to pick,it's their choice.

it's all about context and intent. they're not here to preach some message. at most they're just showing their preference/fetish, and I'm perfectly fine with that. especially when the girls in those games are so much easier on the eyes than the western outputs had been lately.

Also that reminds me that for modern American young males that have gotten into online gym/frat culture, haircare (long hair taken care as well as women)/skincare/and tight fitting fashion seems growing in popularity

Japan as a society does not have a conflict with gender roles. While here in the west we’re being introduced to a new set of rules, were our social construct of masculinity is undergoing change and this is now being implemented into character designs, that is why there is push back. I alluded to this in another thread the other day. Japan and quite a few other regions in Asia do not share our views on masculinity, especially with the recent cultural shift. OP has characters that do not represent how we define physical masculinity, but they all still represent men, or young males without effeminate connotations to the Japanese crowd.

I also think Miquella is an outlier so far as character designs go from a Japanese dev. You’ll probably find lore on it, I haven’t play SotE yet. But if I recall correctly in ER, without spoiling anything there is a woman who is also a man under a different name who are bosses. They’re demigods and so is Miquella who happens to be their child.
