Killzone died because it got worse and worse with each mainline release that came after the second game – to the point that even the PSVITA spin-off was a better game than the uninspired Shadow Fall.

And being just decent is not a luxury that a series that topped at ~3 million lifetime units per entry can afford.
More casuals were playing COD instead of Killzone therefore Killzone mid ? Do you also apply this logic to any other franchise that you love, that sells less than COD ?
You're ignoring the fact that Killzone stopped being itself and began to chase trends (COD, Crysis, Far Cry) with both 3 and Shadow Fall.

I'd argue that the only genuine sequel to Killzone 2 was Mercernary, which retained the heavy game-feel and gritty aesthetic, hence why it was so beloved.

Too fucking bad that, in relative terms, no one bought Killzone 2 and the PSVITA game enough to signal Sony that there was something worth pursuing there.

I cannot stand Horizon but even if they ditched it, they would just make something else equally as stupid.

My only take from this thread is that OP never played Quake. Nor DOOM, Half-Life, Blood, Duke Nukem, FEAR, Serious Sam, Soldier of Fortune... :lollipop_crying:
Yuuuuuup! By the time Killzone came out on PS2, I was already all in on FPS games on PC for several years. It honestly felt like a real late party to me too considering all the awesome FPS experiences that already existed on other consoles like 64 and Xbox by the time it released. I never personally knew anyone that talked it up, I just knew a bunch of people that thought it was pretty cool. But I never heard high praise.

Impressive tech and mediocre games should be Guerrilla games motto.
Yeah I agree, it's highly mediocre. The cutscenes? I skipped them all

But I had a blast with the combat, NG+ especially. Got all the achievements on Steam and that's 100% thanks to the combat

I really dislike the way the bow feels in Horizon. It has no heft or pop. I've tried to play it two or three times and nope out shortly after the tutorial upon popping the map open seeing it littered with typical open world activity markers.

There's so few traditional FPS campaigns now that I think a new Killzone would do pretty well today. But nah, everything needs to be a copy/pasted third-person souls clone. Stuff like the High on Life games is all we have left in terms of FPS campaigns with good production values, which is wild to think about considering how common these used to be.

Killzone MP was really fun too.

I'll never understand why so many people defended Guerilla's decision to abandon Killzone in favor of Horizon...

One of the greatest FPS franchises ever created replaced by some generic open world series , that peaked with the first game and has only gotten worse over time...

Remember the good old days when Playstation had a first party lineup that included Killzone, Resistance, Socom, Buzz, Infamous etc ? We had no idea how good we had it in the 2000s....
I like both IP and I have no issue with them moving on. Horizon 1 literally outsold the entire Killzone IP.... its time to move the fuck on. We literally had like 3 generations of Killzone, it was time for them to move on.

So I like PS line up with Killzone Resistance, Uncharted, Infamous etc

just as much as I like Horizon, Spiderman, The Last Of Us, Ghost Of Tsushima etc

As you see...they let their teams move the fuck on. I still hope we get a Killzone 2 remake one day, but I have zero issue with them moving on to Horizon and hope they move on to a new IP after Horizon 3.

They should not be locked to any 1 fucking IP sir, if we get 3 to 4 good games, thats more then enough.

If you want a game that feels incredible, plays smoothly and packs truly satisfying weapons, it's time to dive into Nioh 3

I'd take Horizon's combat over that any day

Once there was a saying...

`go play halo if you want to shoot a purple gun at yellow and pink aliens while they ride their giant purple tank as
it shoots rainbows at you`

But now its `go play Horizon if you love violet`.

Loved Nioh and the sequel, but I can't get excited about 3. I have a lot of open world fatigue (not that level design was ever a strength of the series) and Diablo-style loot fatigue. I'm sure it is quality, our ships are just crossing at the wrong time.

I dunno if play smooth is how I'd describe Nioh 3 lol, unless I guess maybe if you have a giga super PC but even then I am still a bit skeptical.
Game has a ton of performance issues and some of the worst frame pacing ever which is unfortunate.

KZ got crowded out.

Already too many shooters.... Bungie stuff, Fairgames, Concord, the cancelled deviation games shooter, cancelled Factions 2.

What they could had done is have GG make a KZ shooter and hire a studio to handle Horizon Hunters. But they preferred outsourcing shooters to third party and make HH in house. Go figure.

This is just a dumb b-team spinoff. Killzone died because Killzone wasn't that popular and they started Horizon Zero Dawn.

Hopefully, you actually already understood this, OP.

lol at people asking for Killzone 2 remake... it's never happening and if it did it wouldn't be what you expect.

One really mediocre franchise for another. GG are just not a great studio.
I generally avoid any game-specific threads... and by that I mean commenting in them because I believe that game preferences are mostly subjective.

Thus, I will be a hypocrite if I can't understand that it's possible for someone to like a game that I don't,

However, I find that gamers in general have become grossly hyperbolic, to the point of coming off as either; delusional or ignorant. Or even worse, just attention-seeking so they throw out the hottest takes out there.

This comment of yours, however, has goaded me into responding. I honestly can't take anyone seriously who would say KZ or Horizon are mediocre franchises, and that GG is not a good studio.

Let's be real here, Killzone peaked with Killzone 2. Killzone 3 single player was a mess and the MP didn't really move things forward. Shadowfall was a massive disappointment. If Killzone hadn't died, Guerilla wouldn't be the Horizon factory it is today.

Horizon likely saved Guerrila Games. Killzone probably almost killed it.

And this is coming from a Killzone fan.

It's really funny the way AAA gaming keeps flip flopping between two extremes.

I remember being a little meh on Sucker Punch going from the cartoony Sly to the dark and gritty Infamous, now you look at Guerilla an you grow very sick of cartoony bullshit.

Also funny we wound up here given Guerilla's first game was the ultra gritty Shellshock Nam 64.

Killzone died in 2013. It's 2026. This did not cause that.

Killzone did not die for this, it died because it stopped selling back in 2013 and the next project (HZD, not hunters gathering) sold more than the entire Killzone franchise combined.

I've been a Sony fan since the PS2. But am I crazy or was Killzone always just a "Meh" game? I feel like Resistance was a better Playstation title. Graphics were impressive for PS3 with Killzone. But game wasn't all that great.

Killzone died because KZSF flopped. It was okay as a launch title but reviews for it were shit due to the terrible campaign mode and multiplayer that was good but safe. It sold like crap and didn't do the numbers Sony wanted it to do.

I'm a huge Killzone fanboy but enough of these revisionist crappy threads. 99% of the people crying that they want a new Killzone game didn't buy or play the last one and they won't buy another one if Sony makes one. People here are just crying for a new Killzone because they have a hate boner for Horizon.

Sony is a business and in terms of sales and making money Killzone is nowhere near Horizon in popularity or critical success. Killzone was a good but extremely niche shooter franchise. A new Killzone nowadays would probably flop harder than Shadow Fall did. GAF needs to stop doing this shit, nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

From what I remember KZ SF sold great out of the gate. I think it even sold more than BF4 at launch. So the sales were there. If they nurtured the game more, it could had been more successful but Sony bailed on it fast. It might even had been the best selling game at launch for PS4 more than COD Ghosts?. Not sure.

During the PS3 days, KZ 2 and 3 got great reviews. Problem is Sony had too many first party shooters so MP gamers spread thin.

here's the reality. Killzone, as in the entire franchise, sold less units than Halo 3... less than Halo Reach, less than Halo 4, less than Halo 5... slightly more than Halo 3 ODST, a standalone add-on...
and it probably did beat Halo Infinite, but I don't think official sales data for that is available... but I doubt it sold well.

Shadow Fall was an ok seller for a rushed launch title, but it couldn't keep the franchise afloat. it sold less than any Halo game ever released (except maybe Halo Wars...) and it sold less than Resistance, just to compare it to another Sony launch title FPS (although that franchise fell off a cliff after that sales wise sadly)

so people really have to look at it from the perspective of Sony competing directly against other shooters, and they barely made a dent in the market share with any Killzone.
and at some point, it isn't even making sense as a prestige franchise anymore that is kept alive even tho it's not profitable.

I don't think that would have helped. MP was borderline barren a few months after launch. The game sold very well because it was one of the few exclusive AAA games available at/around launch. But it didn't really move the needle much beyond that.

Like I said, the series peaked with 2 and Guerilla never really knew where to go from there. They should never have killed Visari in KZ2. Narratively they locked themselves in.

A lot of people bought Killzone during the PS4 launch, it benefited immensely from that (My launch PS4 was this bundle, not my pic):

But it didn't really light up the charts either and reviews were not kind to the game's sales beyond that. Same reason The Order 1886 died.

The original Horizon game was horrible. Haven't bothered with the series since that launched.

I'll actually try the co-op game on PC if I get into the playtest though.

Killzone was a terrible game series that only Sony diehards pretended to enjoy as a cope for not having something at the level of Halo during the 360/PS3 era. Guerilla spent a decade continuously failing to make anything worthwhile.

I'm honestly sick of this threads of the innocent gamer victim of the bad developer
Killzone died because you all did not buy it

I have a good memory and I was in this forum already at that times and I can clearly remember that:
Killzone is worst than Cod/Halo3/Battlefield so no buy
Killzone was the fake E3 trailer so boo Sony
Guerrilla is working finally on something else with mechanic dinosaurs Yeeee!!!! Finally no more Killzone!!!
Want to talk about old God of War trilogy Vs Norse chapters?
Wanna talk about Motorstorm trilogy???

So please stop being virgin gamers and face it, if something sells it keep being made

I'm quite sure I will live enough to see a new thread in this forum called "Horizon died for this...."

People I knew had such a hate boner for Halo, that they swore Killzone was going to be the superior fps.
It wasn't.
