Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

Just a tip for everyone who really wants to establish Gies/Polygon's bias against the PS4.

Look at their score for Killzone and where it falls in the distribution on metacritic. Then when Dead Rising 3 and Ryse are reviewed, compare Polygon's score (though it won't necessarily be Gies, so the comparison won't be perfect) to the rest of the distribution. If the Killzone score is at the low end and the X1 exclusive scores are at the high end of their review distribution, you can make the argument that Polygon is biased, though it's still not really sufficient data.

edit: I guess throw in the other PS4 exclusives, too, but then you basically have to give up on making an argument about Gies specifically.

LOL but yeah I can't wait for Second Son either :P

truth be told I'm only waiting because I bought the 3DS (though I do not regret one bit) and because some titles I wanted got pushed back.

But still it's a shame for Killzone. Expected more. The reveal was phenomenal. But afterwards it was the boring forest stage over and over again.

PDZ was an offensively bad game. Its MP was so dysfunctional it hurt.

My impression is that KZ:SF is functional, just not spectacular. But I'll let you know once I've played it.

Look forward to your opinion, I was still psyched at the time for Perfect Dark Zero but it was an amazingly bad experience IMHO. It reviewed pretty mediocre if memory serves right and I was just wondering if we'll look back at Shadowfall the same way.

The buzz was pretty high at that time because Rare hadn't yet turned into the ginger-haired cousin of the industry, as apposed to the incredible visuals Shadowfall has. Hence my comparison.

He really tweeted that? But hey, at least Ghosts is a 7.0 amazing game!

What a joke.

I went past caring about Killzone review scores after KZ2, you are either into the series or you're not. I've loved all the previous games so there is nothing anybody could say that would stop me getting this game and I know I'm going to love it.

Just to be clear, was Arthur Gies the guy who was defending Microsoft's DRM policy?

And EA's DRM/Online only practise. And the creator of the now infamous Xbox One "Secret Sauce" term. It was the thing he was so convinced would make the Xbox One a more powerful console than the PS4 lol.

Dude that is such, such bullshit. Anyone got anything to back this up with? Derrick you are seriously off your rocker if you think 5 million people are buying COD for the campaign.

I know I did. The ones I bought anyway.

COD 2, 3, 4, MW2 and Black Ops. Ended up playing a lot of COD4 multi though, but I didn't buy the game for it.

I'm finding the reactions to the Killzone Polygon review are saying a lot more about the people agreeing with it/defending it than the people dismissing it. If for no other reason than the people dismissing it seem to actually be acknowledging the other reviews for the game.

To those complaining about Polygon's review, it's not like the other reviews are raving about the game. It sounds like it's an uninspired launch game to me.

Really bummed out about it too, as I was holding out hope it was gonna be pretty great.

Are you guys serious ? Ban them because you are mad that they gave a game you were hyped for, an average score ?
I'm not that hyped for it actually and I think the 7-7.5 scores are fair. But following Polygon for PS4 coverage is the same thing is following Fox news for Obama coverage, that's a fact.
These are the same clueless morons that say 720p is indistinguishable from 1080p even with a gun to your head.

The PS3 games were middle of the road at best for me. I'm not surprised at the reviews. Getting out at launch is a good idea, though. PS4 gamers are starved right now and it may help reboot the franchise.

Not surprising - KZ has always been just sorta average. It's also a launch game. When was the last time there was a great launch game? Tekken Tag?

@EatChildren

Would it be fair to call this the PS4's Perfect Dark Zero?

Perfect Dark was the prequel/sequel to one of the most beloved shooters of all time.

Shadow Fall is the next game in a series that not a lot of people care about, where Killzone 2 is considered the only good game (and isn't considered a classic by any means). Shadow Fall will probably end up disappointing, but Perfect Dark Zero might be the most disappointing FPS of all-time. It was coming off from probably the most beloved console shooter of all-time outside of Halo and Goldeneye, and was one of the big major titles from one of the most beloved developers of all-time in Rare.

SEVEN HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS

Other sites for less got banned here, what are you waiting here to ban Polygon Gaf-Gods??????

Hearing that the more open level design quickly regresses is probably the biggest disappointment for me. I've always felt Killzone, as a series, really isn't all that great (I don't think Killzone 2 is a good shooter at all, but Mercenaries does some great stuff), but the wider play space and open level structure had me more excited than I would be for a Killzone game.

Why is everyone so concerned with the Single Player campaign? You'll spend the vast majority of your time in multi. That's what I want to hear about. If these reviews didn't have access to that portion of the game yet, then they shouldn't be publishing them yet.

sony for Christ sake just get naughty dog to make every game on ps4. guerrilla hasn't made a good game since killzone 2 and that was 5 years ago.

I will still buy shadow fall ans most likely enjoy it, but god damn if my hype just flatlined

I'll reserve judgement until I actually play it myself, like any sane person.

But the overall opinion doesn't seem to be very positive at least. Killzone curse?

You are horribly misinformed. Please see this thread. Many regard KZ2 as one of the best shooters of this generation, namely for the sublime multiplayer (which sadly is barely being touched upon in the reviews).

NeoGAF | Best FPS games this gen

lol, no. He is correct. The Killzone franchise is the definition of mediocrity. The average score for the Killzone franchise is 80% (as per Gamerankings). Killzone 4 looks to be another mediocre entry into a mediocre franchise. Killzone 2 is the exception, not the rule.

Why do you guys make such a big scene out of this stuff? It always makes gamers online look so bad. Wait until you play the game and then you can deconstruct the reviews point by point. Hysterical screaming is so wasteful.

Being fair, many people here seem to be commenting just to rub people off. Some of the same persons that complain about reviews in review threads.

I figured as much.

Gorgeous, but a flat, uninspired shooter.

I only got it to see what the PS4 was capable of with a game that was built for it.

Glad I got BF4 as well.

I've played them both through to the end. They are not good games. Linear, the gunplay is horrible and the controls were all over the place. Killzone on PS3 was very, very pretty and it looks like that tradition has continued on PS4, but the gameplay never reached the heights of BF or even COD. It was just all over the place, and since I buy games to play them, not watch them they were horrible, for me at least.

KZ2 gameplay was pretty good.

Yet on the same day Resogun gets 8.5 and the day before Ratchet and Clank scores 8.5 too, both PS exclusives and both scored higher than the Metacritic average for those two games (also, they scored Knack higher than most outlets too).

Becuase if those two games were scored lowit wouldn't hurt PS4, If KZ SF is scored low it hurts PS4 so there's your reason for the game to have such low score.

The Last Of Us's score should dismiss everything they review imo

P.D Resogun best launch title :>

As an Xbox fan, I kind of think Polygon shouldn't give review scores. Or should maybe just skip reviews altogether. Their feature articles are excellent, the site design is brilliant, but there's no escaping the money Microsoft invested in them. No matter if the review scores are legit, they'll never be seen that way.

But everyone should still check out their PS4 review article. Simply beautiful.

I wonder if reviewers are kind of over FPS at this point. Ghosts got hit hard this year and so did this. Maybe it'll encourage devs to spice things up and take some more risks on the shooter front soon.

@EatChildren

Would it be fair to call this the PS4's Perfect Dark Zero?

Ehh. People seemed to think Perfect Dark Zero was an all round turd, sans maybe some multiplayer fun, and I don't remember the hype machine being all that great leading up to launch (seemed to be expected it wasn't going to be a gem). Going by the reviews Shadow Fall is still a good game with great production values. Killzone 2 scored incredibly well and that, for me personally, is a turd of a campaign (multiplayer is great though). So I dunno.

I'm not really paying attention to the scores, because scores don't tell you the content of a game and how well the ideas work. I'm moreso making an observation of the perceived open play space and encounter approach diversity, which was what had me hooked on Shadow Fall more than I would normally be for a Killzone game (similar to Mercenaries). For reviewers to cite this specifically as a failing of the game is disappointing, even if the corridor shooting is still good.

Why is everyone so concerned with the Single Player campaign? You'll spend the vast majority of your time in multi. That's what I want to hear about. If these reviews didn't have access to that portion of the game yet, then they shouldn't be publishing them yet.

People are concerned about the campaign because it's part of the game and partially why some people gravitate towards the series. I won't spend much time with the multiplayer (whenever I get a PS4). Good single player games exist, and I like to play them.

Has Polygons avarage review scores for PS-games and XB-games ever been compared to the overall avarage for PS-games and XB-games?

Perhaps they just use the 0-10 scale properly. Although that still doesn't sit well with me considering both FH and TLoU were exemplary games. Still, opinions (and hits).

THIS

btw, guys this is a launch title, I didn't expect more, good game, it will be fun and eye-candy, but I didn't expect a masterpiece

This is pretty much exactly how I felt about it too!

They underscored the games that matter.

But that could be any game that you choose to "matter", it's an arbitrary thing. If anyone had actually bothered to read their TLOU review instead of gawping over the score and writing angry posts about it on video game forums, you'd see that it is well reasoned and not "biased" at all.

Seems like decent reviews overall to me. More of the same as prior entries, but even more visually stunning.

Are you guys serious ? Ban them because you are mad that they gave a game you were hyped for, an average score ?

At the very least, it's amusing. Sort of like an adult throwing a childlike tantrum because he/she didn't get what they wanted.
