Kinect : The dark age of Xbox

Peak Xbox

I never understood why MS double-downed on Kinect.

Didn't the original creators initially approach Nintendo with their tech, get refused which resulted in them approaching Sony, only to get refused again, before they ended up at MS?

The odd thing is that my friends with kids all loved it.

It was just mismatched with the Xbox brand. Which was a COD dude-bro machine at that time.

They doubled downed because at the time, it was the fastest-Selling consumer electronics device, and sold over 30 millions units.

It's hard to watch this shit. Even if it actually worked as well as they pretended it did in stage presentations, the way they tried to sell it was so cringy.

The "creators" only came with the 3D sensing tech, but at least half of the innovation in kinect is the software processing of 3D data (and speech), which MS handled by itself, and was ground-breaking at the time (for years, Primesense which was the original provider of the camera had an SDK that was lagging far behind the MS SDK).
so yeah Nintendo and Sony were right to decline the tech since they probably wouldn't have been able to do what MS did, just like MS was right to take the challenge.

As someone who bought a day 1 Xbox One who had no choice but to buy Xbox One with Kinect. I feel at least Xbox should make all Kinect games free for all Kinect owners as compensation, not that there are any great games but at least it would be a bit of fun for my kids during this isolation.

Because it was the most successful peripheral ever. It's easy to forget these days but it was super successful and thought of as groundbreaking.

Now, why the hell would a family using their Xbox 360 as a Kinect Sports/Netflix box spend $500 on a new Kinect Sports/Netflix box, I have no idea, but neither did MS apparently.

That was it, didn't remember the entire story.
Sony improved the eyetoy-tech for VR, so they took their own direction with the camera.

MS probably should've developed their own VR-tech, instead of Kinect and HoloLens.
Think that's a mistake of theirs.

The tech itself was pretty cool, but I also liked some of the Eyetoy stuff, so make of that what you will.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I have fun with Kinect. It actually some some family members involved who normally wouldn't even play. Call me crazy but I think that there is a market for Kinect today. Microsoft messed up when the made it the main focus instead of a feature of the Xbox One.

If it wasn't for the Kinect I don't think Xbox 360 would have sold 80+ million units.

Kinect Adventures pushed over 24 million units (I believe it was bundled with every Kinect system), making it the best selling Xbox 360 game.

Had plenty a good time with Kinect. The issues came from it needing a warehouse for space in your living room, that was all.

It shouldn't have been a pack in, it should have been a lower cost extra.

30 million units sold. MS is laughing all the way to the bank.

I don't think they're laughing. The surge of popularity died off very quickly. It was a false sense of confidence. Worse, this fueled the idea to include it with Xbox One. The added cost of kinect propelled its price above the more powerful ps4. Gamers immediately saw the xbox one as overpriced and underpowered, and Kinect was one of the main culprits. And, ps4 immediately jumped out with a big sales lead and never looked back.

Kinect cost them more than it made in the long run.

Once they focused on that during the 360 era they lost their way and the games dried up for the last 2-3 years of the consoles lifecycle.

This is a lie because there was a Halo , Forza & Gears of War game almost every year just like always nothing changed after Kinect

Kinect was a huge success, like it or not.

Yeh so good. So good in fact that it changed Xbox forever and set them up for a generation of underperformance.

Come on man, I know you're joking (you have to be...) but the first half of the 360 generation had a steady flow of great exclusive games outside of the typical triple X combo.

The problem is, I think, that you have to have this sophisticated and expensive camera paired with cutting edge image processing software all for, basically, Wii Sports without a controller. It's just not worth it.

MS talked a lot about the technology inside Kinect, it's really impressive, and in the end it was used to dance in front of the TV and flap your arms like a chicken.

You should see the games that MS published from 2005-2010 and compare it to after. MS published quite a bit more than Halo/Forza/Gears and all of that dried up.

Yeah, Kinect was a nice device and I really liked. But ... Microsoft made two big mistakes,
a) bundled with Kinect the Xbox One price was way to high. In combination with the "TVTVTV" fiasco it really hurt the sales
b) they went all the way to Kinect, I think the acceptance would have been higher when Kinect and AA titles on one side and AAA core games on the other side. But they invested to much effort into Kinect and left the core gamers with only few brands like Gears, Forza and Halo behind

They made a large investment in this thing. I don't have a problem with the product itself, it's a nice little diversion.

I don't like the way they marketed it though. Particularly at the beginning with that "Project Natal" showing. Go back and look at it, they demonstrated a lot of BULLSHIT. And outright LIED multiple times.

P. Molyneux lost any reputation he had left, once he participated in that fakery.

We probably would have got another AAA regular game from Rare and Lionhead if it wasn't for Kinect.

I would still have mine if they could have managed a exact 1-1 mapping instead of the nasty lag. The only game that I enjoyed with Kinect was D4. In fact it was the only one that was (I feel) enhanced by Kinect. Well, there were the dance games, but I'm leaving those out.

Kinect was a cool piece of kit. V2 even more so. Its too bad MS never realized its potential (in products), discouraged developers from utilizing additional peripherals that enhanced it and had to datamine (SPY) its customers.

Not only was it the best selling Video Game console add-on ever, the damn thing is not dead and still lives, contrary to claims by journalists and youtubers.

Its them chasing trends and focusing more on casual stuff over hardcore which was there downfall.
I think kinect and other motion controls to have great potential nif done right.
Look at the switch, ring fit adventure and arms are great.
I find exercise really boring and i dont like just think about workout out when working out, playing sport or playing an exercise game takes your mind of the exercise part and is more fun.

It was a total trainwreck but damn did it make great videos and memes. The funniest Xbox period, along with the infamous Xbox One TV reveal.
