King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard drops single for 4th album this year.

So, there's no dedicated Gizz thread, which I think is a crime, but until I can muster up the energy to make an OT type thing, just revel in the glory of this 10 minute psych-prog masterpiece

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, if you couldn't tell by the name, are an experimental psychedelic rock band from Australia. Since their inception in 2010, they've put out 11 albums and one EP, toured pretty much every second they aren't recording, and somehow are challenging themselves to put out 5 albums this year alone.

Their work ranges from straightforward modern Psych rock like Float Along - Fill Your Lungs, spaghetti western audio books scored by a band like Eyes Like the Sky, a jam band, recording an album with 4 songs exactly 10 minutes and 10 seconds long, such as Quarters!, an infinitely looping garage rock album Nonagon Infinity, a 3 part narrative metal album that ends with the Murder of the Universe, using microtonal scales in Flying Microtonal Banana, and jazz rock in Sketches of Brunswick East

With the breath and depth of their discography, there's something for everyone, and it's a shame not many people know about them, despite them doing an entirely sold out NA tour...

Rattlesnake is my jam!

Also man I wish they would change the name. I tell anyone about them and they don’t give it a chance specifically because of the name. And they aren’t wrong for looking the other way, honestly.

Nonagon Infinity is a damn good album. I never dived into their other stuff too much but I really should, especially since they are so prolific.

The name is one of my favorite things about the band, but yeah, it turns people off instantly. Legend has it that they made it up 10 minutes before a gig once.

Yeah, it's weird, but I've not really delved into their first 5 albums (and EP) despite linking a few in the OP, but their most recent 7, including Nonagon are so phenominal that it's hard to peel myself away and try their older stuff (plus a lot of it's not on streaming due to being released on a somehow even smaller label than their currently small label)

Sure, they are. What kind of person won't give a band a chance based off a name. It's not even a bad name, just unconventional. Certainly more interesting than "The Killers" or something of that sort.

I got a few friends into King Gizz and their reaction upon hearing the name is always to chuckle and say "Okay, should be interesting"

They kind of remind me the Flaming Lips in that they're sometimes a really great psych band, but they drown it out with so much wacky bullshit that eventually I lose interest and stop paying attention.

I'm tempted to call these bands, like, "hobby bands" or something. They're so up their own asses you basically have to join their cult and buy their limited gummy skull USB album and 20-EP subscription series to fully appreciate them.

Then again I'm a Robert Pollard fan so I'm probably an enormous hypocrite.

That's not to say they're bad or anything. Just exasperating.

Yeah, I won't deny that they are over reliant on gimmicks, it just happens to be that I really have dug every gimmick so far. Currently the most bullshit thing is the theory of the Gizzverse

A linking of albums by melodies and vocals, first thought to be neat touches by fans, but confirmed by the band as part of something much bigger... which, is neat, but people are reading WAAAAAAAAAAY too much into it.

Dead

well not really...yet
Murder of the Universe and Microtonal Banana were amazing. Haven't really listened to Brunswick yet.

I've been to two festivals where they were hanging about (one time literally, I bumped into the singer in the street) but never really gave them a proper listen.

This thread got me to do so. I'm digging it. Thanks OP.

I certainly don't like everything from them, but Nonagon Infinity is a damn good album. Also The River is also great from them.

It's promising.

Flying Microtonal Banana overshadows the following two releases for me. I liked both (Murder of the Universe a little more because I like album-spanning narratives) but the records didn't quite communicate the groovy energy the band has. Rattlesnake is proof that endless repetition can be just as dynamic as slick variation (although the song arguably employs both). It also has one of the greatest music videos in recent memory. You can't not love the band after watching it or the one for People-Vultures.

not from my show, but enjoy nonetheless: Changes + Planets is much more my preferred jam to the heavier stuff, so this shit is wonderful for me

What's your #1 favourite KGLW song? I think you recommended me some of their tunes before but I can't remember what it was but I remember quite enjoying it. I could just look them up on Spotify but I want your opinion.
For me personally there are too many to choose from. I really enjoy the synth pop of their album Butterfly 3000. Omnium Gatherum is great place to start because it has a variety of their musical stylings.

KG and LW were the first albums of theirs that got me hooked.

There’s a guide on Reddit somewhere with a recommendation for where to start and what to listen to next based on which songs you like.

I started listening Nonagon Infinity during my stoner rock phase. Due to expectations it didnt initially click, but made me curious enough to listen to it more.

For me, it was a good gateway to their discography (guess it was '19?. Edit: it must have been earlier, '17 or '18) but they made so much more since then. Their live show in '19, just before covid was a blast.

Try to leave expectation at the door and dive in. These guys have so many angles. Good albums to start with, I think, are:

-Nonagon Infinity, obviously.
-Omnium Gatherum
-Fishing for Fishies
-KG
-LW
-I'm in your mind fuzz
-Flying microtonal banana

But to be honest, just put on any album, take a seat and enjoy!

Maiden Voyage Maiden Voyage got me into these guys in the What, Are You Listening, Too? thread with "Catching Smoke". That song was good, I dove in to their other stuff.

Omnium Gatherum is my favorite album of theirs (so far). Matter of fact, I ran a half-marathon to it last week and it kept me going the whole time

Man I have never heard of these guys before, and I was ready to make a casual shitpost and move on with my day, but the more I got listening to this stuff, the more interesting I found it.

Certainly not daily listening fare but I don't hate the experimental progrock stuff. Clearly most of it is meant to be enjoyed with an open mind (aka drugs), but some of the riffs are actually pretty good. The vocals fit the music but if I had to say I had a "least favorite" part, it'd be the vocals.

The "Murder of the Universe" album reminds me of a castlevania boss soundtrack. I'm a sucker for narrative metal though, notably Protest the Hero's album Kezia.

Anyways, thanks for the bump Maiden Voyage Maiden Voyage - I have some stuff to check out.

Kraftwerk Gizz album has my attention. I'm a bit biased as Butterfly 3000 is one of my fav albums of theirs.
