Kingdom Come Deliverance - A flawed masterpiece

I've been playing this game in preparation for the sequel and I am having an incredible time. I remember playing this at launch but it was really buggy when it came out and I decided to stop playing it until it got fixed but never came back until now

The game is now quite polished and for me the best part of it is how immersive it feels. The world is incredibly well made, every npc has daily routines and a coherent behavior, something that we dont see very often in videogames. They sleep, eat and go to places and interact with the world. A lot of work and care went into this

The graphics are beautiful, it uses cry engine and it looks great, I love the look of the world, there is an hd texture pack which enhances even more the graphics. Performance is good as well, I had no issues although I have a beefy computer

The game at first can feel overwhelming because it's difficult to understand how the gameplay systems works, specially the combat so I can see how this can put off some people but my advice is to stick with it until it clicks because when it does, it becomes a wonderful experience. Its a game that rewards you curiosity and the attitude of wanting to become better at playing it

I really love how well the game is written, the dialogues are great, smart and the characters are very interesting. There are a few missions like the one with the priest that are absolutely hilarious. And the side quests are very interesting too, some of them have impact as well in certain characters which is a nice touch

One thing I love is the freedom the game gives you to resolve missions. There are many ways to do things, and for example, you can kill enemy bandits in their camps by poisoning their food, or killing them with a knife while their sleep. This is specially useful in tge begining when Henry doesn't have much experience.

I love as well the feeling of progression of Henry, you have to practice combat a lot to get better and leveling up, you have to learn to read so you can become smarter and learn new techniques, you can lear alchemy or how to be more stealthy and steal faster. The amount of choices to focus on are awesome

The story is great too, with lots of good and memorable moments and the music although a bit repetitive at times, it's great. I hope they add more variety in the sequel

If I had to say something negative about the game it would be that combat with many enemies can be messy anc clunky, it feels like the combat ia very well designed for a 1 vs 1 but when you have many enemies it can be frustrating although it gets better the stronger your Henry becomes. And another thing is that the saving system is a little weird, on pc I am using a mod that allows me to save whenever I want and its much better in my opinion

Anyway, I hope I have convinced you to play the game, its great, yes its not perfect and have some flaws, but its a hell of a ride and I cant wait for KCD2

Listen to papi Gonzo and play it

Cheers

Beautiful shots OP. It is indeed a masterpiece. The few lows it has - weak facial animation, clunky lock-on, becoming too easy in late game - are fairly insignificant compared to the highs. Especially immersion and especially in hardcore mode. KCD and RDR2 are closest games have ever gotten to "time travel simulator".

CohhCarnage is replaying it in preparation for KCD2 so I have been watching from time to time and even just watching how he deals with stuff is fun.

The whole melee combat with the star system should never have survived the concept phase.

I won't defend the combat because I think that it could be better implemented. That being said, when you practice and level up, the 1vs1 combat in my opinion is great and feels satisfying to parry and finding the right spot to slash enemies.

But yeah I really hope that the sequel bring improvements in this area of the game, specially since Henry now is a better warrior

I started this the other day. Went into town, was told to sell some tools. I haggled and sold my tools and then didn't have enough to buy the things I needed. I said aint nobody got time for that, so knocked it off and not been back yet

Load a save game
Find a bandit camp
Kill every one while they sleep/poison their food.
Haul as from camp to a Miller x times to sell all the trash.
Rinse and repeat x times
Buy every book possibleand read every book before sleep, pay for every master to teach you their craft.
Buy every single item you will ever need on the game, improve it and resell it.

Inject 650 years of economic theory and money laundry on these medieval bastards in a matter of weeks.

Jesus Christ be praised
You're welcome.

Don't make the mistake of skipping it man, play it. The story and characters matter and the sequel will follow directly the story of the first game, if you don't play it it will be confusing and won't have the intended impact

Yes, if you expect to be slaying dragons and ancient evils 10 minutes after starting the game, you are not getting that here.
The game does a pretty good job filtering people with ADHD.

Picked it up and while back for like $5 during a sale but it ran terribly on my old PC so I never got far. Been meaning to get back around to it before the sequel but I just don't have the time for such a long immersive game!

I love the sense of scale in this game. Every building, every road and every hut looks like real life sized. In almost all other games i feel like these things are smaller than they should.

I don't like the combat or needing a finite item to manually save.
Once you learn to brew it you can have as many as you want. Or...just use the mod.
Combat requires some patience, I find it great 1v1, only the lock-on is too unwieldy against multiple opponents, but it can be overcome.

I started the game ages ago but I’m trying to finish it before the sequel arrives.

Im doing the Rocketeer quest and just got Keyser to arrive at Talmberg. I just wish th pace of the game picked up a little at this point as it seems that it is intent to give me a bunch of optional quest items that I don’t really care to do at this point (find beer and meat for the camp etc) even though I know they will probably assist with my eventual siege.

Funny things I’ve noticed:
- Doing certain quests/tasks out of order often reveals the games jank which is quite funny
- Following Keyser to Talmberg can observe him getting attacked by bandits repeadedly
- Peychar infiltrating the Talmberg camp and trying to kill keyser (while I’m randomly in discussion with someone). Watching my camp swarm him in the background and sound the alarm while I’m casually talking to someone is a sight.

The game has crashed a fair few times on PS5 which has caused me to lose progress.

Too many games. I own this with all the dlc and never played it. I'll have to give it a go.

Is it an elderly scrolls style of like well over 100 hours to play?

It is first person open world RPG. Playtime depends on playstyle. It can be finished in 40-50 hours if you prioritize main quest and only do some sidequests.

My playthrough took me 200 hours, but I did every single sidequests, all DLCs, and played in hardcore mode which (among other great things) disables fast travel.
Will probably watch a story summary
There is KCD "movie" collection of all story cutscenes on the warhorse youtube channel. But you should play it yourself, making decisions and seeing various ways to resolve quests is big part of the experience.

I think it's a medieval simulator just as RDR2 is a wild west simulator. Both do a great job of getting a peak into their respective time of law and order, politics and humanity. I enjoyed exploring the world and getting to know everything about it much more than I enjoyed the story.

Thank you for this ill check it out.

If i had more time I'd play the first game but I have too little time before the second game comes out in two months and too many other games I'm playing concurrently. And busy being a new dad too. 😪

KCD 1 is my Jan 25 game. Got the mod for unlimited saving ( stupid design btw, if you want decisions to matter and all that just have only one save slot per playthrough not limit the saves to consumables) and other quality of life mods.

This is a great OP and I agree with most of it. I also used the save mod and there are a few mods that helped with combat as well.

The sequel looks like it improved combat with 1 vs many and it is even more expansive so can’t wait!

Edit; Forgot to add that folks really should play this on PC if they can. It’s an older game so it doesn’t take much to run it at a good frame rate.

One constantly overwriting save slot is very prone to gamebreaking if the game is not 110% super uber polished. In nonlinear RPG where every quest has X amount of solutions it would be a very bad idea. Right now I am playing Indiana Jones, which is a linear game with automatic autosaves and one overwriting save slots, and I had a bug where the game autosaved me under the ground and I had to spend 20 minutes trying to glitch myself from under the ground to get above ground to be able to play. Fortunately it was possible to glitch myself out from it, but I was worried my 30 hours playtime were down the drain.

Once you learn to brew savior schnapps, it is really not that big of an issue. You can level up alchemy painlessly and have plenty of save potions. You can even make money selling them.

I started it recently on steam deck. Liking it so far but haven’t had much gaming time lately. It seems like too much freedom, ha! Like the armor in the beginning you get after picking a lock. I didn’t assume that cause I thought I might need all the money for the bribe they mentioned. So I hesitate and look it up.

The solution to that is to have a seperate autosave slot you can set at certain intervals. Like Bethesda games autosaves every 30 minutes or so.
Besides, I wanna take my time to a degree with kcd 1 but also on a time limit because feb is packed for me so I am eliminating all potential roadblocks in the game.

It's an amazing gaming experience, how a small team made this is unthinkable. Even the graphics are phenomenal... Riding through a forest at night with only a torch to guide you looks incredible, gotta watch out for bandits and bloody branches :messenger_grinning_sweat:

The dialogue and characters are memorable and well written/acted, the quest with the priest is maybe my favourite of all time. Can't wait for KCD2, hopefully they don't lose the magic
