Kingdom Hearts: Disney or Square's idea?

I've been playing Chain of Memories, and it's pretty good. But a question popped into my head while I was playing the game. The whole KH franchise, was it Disney's or Square's idea? I was thinking about it, and it is possible it came from either one of them.

Disney's Idea: Disney co. probably wanted some epic Disney adventure in the videogame industry. However, it would be hard to find a company that would be able to do it right. Squaresoft was gaining popularity after Final Fantasy VII was released (which was successful and acclaimed in all parts of the world), and Disney figured they could create a huge Disney RPG-type game like Final Fantasy with Square.

Square's Idea: Some Squaresoft employee who has seen a lot of the Disney animated movies might've figured, "Hey, wouldn't it be great if we could combine all of these movies into one huge game?" He probably told some producers, they probably thought it would be a neat project, got Disney's permission, and began work on the game.

Well, does anyone know the true origins to this game?

Disney Japan and Square share the same building. Nomura and some Disney guy were on the same elevator and started discussing the idea, and the rest is history. Or something like that.

Wow interesting.

Just watched Alladin today after 10 years. Fucking amazing movie, Genie = best animated character ever (charisma and charm)

As for kingdom hearts, brilliant idea to combine the 2 styles

1) Square wanted more money.
2) Disney wanted more money.
3) Tons of reputation was at stake.
4) Nomura had no reputation left to lose after designing Tidus.
5) .....
6) Profit!

:lol :lol :lol

I just find it funny that the entire gameplay is quite simplified in Kingdom Hearts, but some of the bosses are quite trouble-inducing. My little brother adores the shit out of KH but gave up after a few boss battles. SQUARE AND DISNEY HAVE LOST A FAN.

Now all he watches are Studio Ghibli animations and plays Nintendo games. There you go.

Yeah, I remembered how troubling (I guess I'll tag it)
Malifecent the Dragon
was on my 1st tries, and I thought, "How the hell is a little kid supposed to beat this thing?

To be fair I don't think Kingdom Hearts is really a "kids" game. No doubt it's a Disney x Square crossover, but how many kids that are KIDS today even know who Maleficent is? I watched Little Mermaid as a kid literally, and honestly, my sister who was born in 1990 has NEVER watched it. It's before her time, and so's Beauty and the Beast if not for the fact that I'm a big fan and it's been available for her to watch since she was young. Kingdom Hearts is really meant for the teenager and young adults who grew up with Disney and then went on to play recent FF games. Sure it'll have a fanbase among kids who love everything Disney, but I know Square's talking to people like ME with the game's writing and in-jokes/references.

Hmm, where did you read that?

The decision to collaborate on a game was made jointly by Square and Disney executives, but the actual concept and direction of the game, including basic stuff like being an action-RPG and featuring characters from many different movies, was chosen entirely at Square by Tetsuya Nomura and his staff.
