Kotaku has a great article on the history of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion

My favorite ride, and one of my favorite things ever.
My Capcom ID and Street Fighter name , as well as other online games is GGGhost for Grim Grinning Ghost.
Has been a favorite thing of mine since I was a kid, even have the book and record of the story and muliple versions of the soundtrack.

The fucking bride scared the shit out of me as a kid, too bad they turned her into a lame cgi face rather then full automotronic.

Wow I've never seen that Mystic Manor video before-holy cow.

I like that they were able to make a catchy melody without using Grim Grinning Ghosts. In fact, I think the reason for this ride's existence is because they wouldn't allow ghosts or spirits at Hong Kong, but magic giving life to inanimate objects was perfect.

We need more trackless ride tech over here in the US.

Second from the right is my favorite. The current one is awful and I hate it.

One goes up, the other goes down.

That's the only difference though, right? The actual content of the rides are the same?

I don't give a shit if Mystic Manor is just a rethemed Haunted Mansion to get around not allowing ghosts in Hong Kong, Disney needs to put that in one of their American parks ASAP. Stick it in DCA since they're getting rid of the Tower of Terror, that way each park will have their own "spooky" house ride.

I love the Haunted Mansion. Disney has jacked the prices of their annual passes something like 150% in the last 4 years(ish) for Disneyland so we won't be getting those any more, but when we'd go, we rode Haunted and Pirates, no lie, at least 6 times a day while we were there. We would sometimes go through the turnstiles in Haunted and go right around and get back on it.

Haunted is the shit and I'm actually heartbroken because of how we've been priced out of Disneyland...

first experienced it in the Adventures in the Magic Kingdom on NES

then went to the real thing later on as a kid and it was the best

Holy shit I went to Disneyworld in 2001 and 2002 and didn't do Alien Encounter either time. I even remember seeing its name in the park maps and shit. I had no idea it was so controversial and uncharacteristically frightening. Granted I was still a kid so I probably would've hated it but I would've loved it today :(
