Kotaku: The Wii U Won't Be Getting Unreal Engine 4

And if he didn't think it was an issue he'd not had replied at all. If I was him wouldn't had replied to anyone's "tweets", at best i'd just have released one statement about being taken out of context, because at the end of the day I still run a business.

Speaking of tweets, who are those two guys anyhow? Can't just be some normal dudes tweeting because I imagine he gets thousands of tweets a week.

Well, if I were him I wouldn't have laughed at a question like that in the age of social media. He had to know it would blow up, even if it was for entirely ridiculous reasons. He did come off as pretty unprofessional, so a blanket apology about being taken the wrong way would have been fine.

I'm not sure who the people blowing up his twitter are. He probably should have just ignored them too. Rein probably could have just explained himself better had he just said Epic won't support it, but licensees can do whatever they want. That way you avoid perceived slights that tend to get blown out of proportion by both knee jerk defenders of Nintendo and those who seem to enjoy skewering them.

Because UE4 won't be able to degrade on older cards/computers? Unless they want to just sell to people with 680s and Titans.

Although it's getting harder to distinguish between the middleware (creation tools) and the tech (what actually gets rendered/how it renders it). Engine version number increments used to essentially mean a gigantic paradigm shift. Now they're pretty much just the latest update of what they already built out, with some new software to make content creation easier, and a couple of new features included to tempt new licensees.

I mean, look how long Ubisoft has been riding the original UE2 base they've been adding features to. Treyarch and Infinity Ward are on a juiced up idtech 3. Engine version numbers have started to lose their meaning.

UE4 is designed to take advantage of DX11 cards. If your game is targeting lower spec, they are still selling UE3. They won't have any real mobile support until the next generation of phones and tablets in 2014 and beyond (Galaxy S5 or Note 4, iPhone 6, Ipad 6, etc).

Fascinating in the sense that it's fun to poke at and revel in their psychological dysfunction? Because that's most of what I see in this thread, and it's just as sad as the original delusion.

Not for me.

I mean fascinating in the sense that I also invest parts of myself in dumb things and/or get offended when someone insults something that has nothing to do with me. But it (hopefully) doesn't affect my behavior and is to a much lesser degree.

So when some displays a type of thinking that occurs in many people's minds, but it is so extreme and obvious, it can cause some self reflection. It's like when I read or hear about some dumb crap on Fox news that people actually believe, it makes me ask myself "I might not believe that particular crap, but what crap do I believe that I don't actually see as crap?" if you know what I mean.

Moreover, getting called out on a forum or wherever can be helpful. Maybe someone might think "Hey, I might be a little too invested in a videogame company that has absolutely nothing to do with me, my family, or my life. I should re-assess." Or not. :-)

Edit: and scary in that sometimes it gets scary, e.g. the response to Anita Sarkeesian.

Lesson learned: Laughing publicly at a Nintendo product will make you a target of Nintendo Nation.

I hope other industry folks have been watching.
Same across all "nations". Lets not forget the "death threats" Kamiya received over Bayonetta 2 and NeoGAF very own debacle over Uncharted 3's review.

Newsflash: Fanboys of all consoles are obsessed...or at least they pretend to online.

Fair points all around.

I do think there is a distinction to be drawn between those who argue in good faith and those who antagonize deluded people because trolling amuses them greatly. I think helping people dispense with their sacred cow's is helpful, but insulting them in the process probably isn't.

If the WUST threads weren't so ridiculously massive I'd love to pull a ton of quotes out of them.
So. Much. Fail.

If I had the time, I'd love to go through those WUST threads. As you said, there were many *ahem* interesting and overly enthusiastic opinions/predictions in them.

you're definitely right. You run a business that's in the business of selling engines of all kinds, you don't just laugh at potential customers no matter what you personally may think, and it does make you look unprofessional and could make others wonder if you do something they don't like would you trash them in public too? I think he got that though hence the more professional sounding tweets.

And yeah he could had avoided all this because there are some really... intense Nintendo fans who go crazy over everything mentioned/ and some really... intense Nintendo detractors who revel in anything slightly negative about them.

And no chance the same thing isn't happening over in the PS4 threads?

Where the specs were actually known for a while and Sony surprised everyone by adding (previously thought impossible) 8GB of fast ram which nobody saw coming?

I don't think so, at least not even close to the same extent.
Nintendo kept the Wii-U spec fanatics completely in the dark, it was only after the actual launch that people got an idea for the console's true capabilities.

Compared to the WUST threads? The PS4 threads are pretty tame by comparison thus far. The 8 GDDR5 mantra can get a bit tired, though. The WUST threads were completely different beasts all together...for both good and bad.

Nintendo didn´t release the specs but after the E3 it was pretty clear that the WiiU would be on 360/Ps3 level. You could see this if you wanted to. Of course some people prefered to stay in their dream world.

What happens if stuff gets announced for Wii U and they aren't coming to PS4/720.

Same scenario :)

Sure, that'll happen as well. Nintendo will no doubt put some stellar titles on the U.
But with apparently third parties largely abandoning the console, I think the ratio of "games exclusive for Wii-U" VS "new games for next-gen" is going to be very, very skewed.

Maybe, but than again you could say the same about PS4/720.
No man. We're already getting cross gen announcements before the systems are released. By 2014-2105 these consoles will be getting third larty exclusives. Third parties want to move on from this gen. BF4 announced for 360/PS3/PS4/and obviously 720 is coming. Yet no Wii U. That is just a taste of things to come. By 2014-2015 most big third party releases won't get cross gen release.

You would have to see pretty widespread adoption of the new consoles before the PS3/360 are abandoned. The install bases are too large. If that doesn't happen, I would bet cross generational games will stick around for a while. There are a lot of industry hopes and dreams clinging to the success of the PS4 and Durango come this Winter. If the demand isn't what has been trumpeted as the expectation, there will be a lot of muted self reflection going on at major development companies.

Cross gen will exist for some time for some IPs just as it was last gen. But this isn't going to be a Wii U situation for PS4/720. Devs are all on board as well as pubs. That is the opposite of the Wii U. Pubs and manufacturers together are spending billions on the PS4/720. They're not going to let them not succeed.

No the 3Tflop or bust and "10x or a leap didnt happen" and "Stacking Memory" theories... Yeah... it DID happen.

And you have to remember, Iwata has stated countless times he sees the industry going in the wrong direction, so obsessed with power at the expense of everything else, including pricing for platform holders and gamers, and as such he is trying to avoid the inevitable big crunch that's coming.

What inevitable crunch? I understand Iwata has this fear, but the industry has always been obsessed with power. It's nothing new, and just because Nintendo's now thinking differently doesn't mean it's the "right way". If anything the wrong direction seems to be exactly what Nintendo's doing, and it's going to cost them going forward until they fall back in line with everyone else.

It was one guy on Twitter who made a "death threat". Let's not kid ourselves here, the 'crazy' Nintendo fans are a different breed altogether compared to 'crazy' Xbox and Playstation fans. It's telling that all that people reference is the months old Bayonetta debacle when discussing Sony fanboys. That and the, what, year old Uncharted 3 thread? It's even more tame with Xbox... I can't remember the last time Xbox fans acted like crazies. Compare this to Nintendo's fanbase, every single day stuff like this comes up. It's not even close. Compare the amount.

No way this will happen, they are on that PS4/nextbox train until it falls off the rails, we saw a mini version of this, this generation. We had one system sell 100 million consoles and two others sell maybe 140 million combined, and the 100 million seller was ignored almost completely.

Companies in the west are primarily technology driven and will be that way no matter the cost to their own business.

Right, but devs and pubs were all on board for the PS360 launch and it took years for them to take off in a good economic climate with less competition. I'm not saying the Wii U is in the same situation, it clearly isn't, but some of the pie in the sky optimism seems unwarranted to me.

Not to mention that the hot new thing to buy these das are smartphones and tablets. Its not the consoles anymore.

You're probably right. I just don't know what the threshold is for staying on the rails. The PS3 and 360 launches weren't unstoppable rocket ships. It took time.

Heh, you guys think its ugly now, oh no, wait till this fall.

The heat's on Nintendo at the moment, but one big slip up from Sony or Microsoft and it's going to be on them bigtime. This gen was the start of a new era where if you srew up, it's going to be all over the 'net, and it's only gotten worse.

The more you insist on comparing, the worse you'll make it. As an avowed Nintendo fan who tries to be reasonable about this kind of thing, I'm kindly asking you not to pick the scab. It's really best for everyone if people try to stay away from "X FANS ARE LIKE THIS!" "OH YEAH, WELL Y FANS ARE LIKE THIS!" and just call out unreasonable behavior when it comes up.

I don't see why people think its expected for PS4/720 to sell fantastically at launch. They'll probably be a slow build like last gen as the price decreases. 360/PS3 will stay around for a bit yet. Hoping for ports of those games is the best Nintendo can hope for interns of third party support.

So fanboys are crazy, but Ninty fanboys are a special kind of crazy?
And you wonder why people think you're a waste of time, man.

This is delusion and you know it.

I've seen plenty of this in PS4 spec threads, and I've seen a similar amount in Xbox 3 spec threads.

Hyperactive fans are equally hyperactive fans, no matter if it's a sport, a console, a political ideology, or even a wrestler.

This thread is a great example of that, on ANY side of the spectrum. Your post exemplifies it.
