Suspect was soaked in gasoline when taken in custody, man in his 40s. Motives yet unknown.
*Death toll is not official yet*, over 30 injured of which several are critical.
EDIT: Adding as more news surface
- Guy didn't just pour gasoline all over the building but on people too

=============
Latest summary
35 injured of which 10 critical, 20 missing, suspect is a 41 year old man.

=====================
Apparently 20+ confirmed dead, could be up to 30. It's possible most of the missing people are deceased.

What the fuck son? What reason could you have to kill random people that worked on fucking anime?

This wasn't even the head office. I don't get why this guy targeted this specific building.

Well we can concur he was a lunatic.

Other than that, maybe he was recently laid off or rejected from a relationship with a co worker or who knows.

I just finished rewatching Shirobako too, making it hit that much harder.

One of the leading studios that actually pays their employees well. I'm fucking pissed.

This is just a coincidence right?

Apparently it was indeed 13 dead (1 from earlier plus 12 found in cardiac arrest in the building)

=============
Reason could be

パクリ (PAKURI) = plagiarism

"The arsonist was chased by a KyoAni employee until he was apprehended by police while hiding at a nearby home. when asked why he did it, the arsonist angrily replied “I was ripped off. I poured the gasoline. I lit the fire with a lighter.”

WHAT THE FLYING FUCK?!!

If this guy was some deranged otaku with something to prove, then fuck him. Hating an anime studio's work is no excuse to commit arson and homicide. EVER.

If I'm getting this right, it has something to do with pakuri?

On 9gag's Anime/Manga section there's a thread about this, the sister of someone who posts in that thread works at that place and has been injured by the fire. Might be another source for updates if you can ignore it's 9gag.

Murder is vile, but murder by fire? Jesus. That's another level of cruelty entirely.

You say they still hang people over there?

Disgruntled employee or disgruntled fan?

Also 20+ deceased in a core production studio = the lunatic has effectively destroyed the studio. You don't find animation talent just like that. These are people with decades of experience.

As far as I can read, two theories are floating around (he's confirmed to NOT be a former employee)
1. Rabid mentally ill otaku didn't like what they did to one of his waifus, so he decided they needed to be torched alive
2. Disgruntled mentally ill otaku went to one of those KyoAni contests (those they have about light novels etc.), he was rejected, later saw they were using one of his ideas (or some idea he claims to be his) and went in a fit of murderous rage
Neither is worse, there's no excuse.

Μore info;

Access to the roof was blocked or locked. More people could have been saved
In such quiet cities in Japan there is no guard or access system. Anyone can walk in and even interact with staff. Arsonist must have visited the place before to know the weak spots

holy shit! 20+ dead!? this is horrible and my thoughts are with them. hopefully they're able to recover. I'm pretty sure arson that cause death would be hang in Japan, and I hope that guy gets it.
