Kyoto Animation studio set on fire, multiple fatalities reported (update: 33 dead)

Just awful. :(

Why would anyone want do kill people over something over a grudge? (assuming it is).

Hope those people RIP as I couldn't imagine the pain they suffered....

According to the news his claim is that they stole an idea from him, possibly for a LN, maybe for some other train-related word/concept.

Another theory is this:
A train otaku that got mad about KyoAni ruining the scenery at a trainspotting location by attracting a pilgrimage of anime otakus.
Also, Hibike had a baritone sax solo that people called "barisaku". Coincidentally, barisaku was the abbreviation he personally used for another trainspotting related term:
バリバリ観光してサクッと撮りましょう (energetically sightsee and take pictures quickly)
He was mad furious and spamming in Euphonium threads on 5ch all the time about trains and such, but since the day the attack was carried out, his flaming stopped.

I'm sure people will counter me with evidence to the contrary but at least here in Japan it just seems like people with a lot of anger are willing to lash out on targets easier than in the past. There have been way too many incidents this last year alone.

The Times this morning corroborates the story about the arsonist claiming rip off from a woman who spoke to him after the attack, when he showed up at her door pants burning. Seems like a nutter.

They also report that some of the victims in critical condition are so badly burned the hospital staff has been unable to determine their sex.

Damn... just saw this, don’t take it as a matter of fact though but someone is reporting that Yasuhiro Takemotois among the dead, on twitter but I’m skeptical because a lot of other sources are saying he’s missing. Also found this image from reddit off of twitter.

How are people missing again? The studio isn't that big. Are you telling me they can't identify people?

That may be the case depending how severe they were burned. :/
But it was reported the injured were burned while most of staff died due to asphyxiation trying to get to the roof. A simple role call would clear things. :/

True but they did mention somewhere that there was some who passed away because of severe burns. As to how significant those burns were, is anyone’s guess.

Maybe some got out before the rescuers arrive, but you’d think they would report that they are alive.

I agree with you though, it’s odd that they say some are missing.

A bit more information(none of the names of the deceased seems to have surface yet) but apparently there were more female fatalities(20) and the name of the arsonist is Shinji Aoba.

TOKYO — Police were investigating Friday the gutted animation studio building in Kyoto where a man raging about theft set a fire that killed 33 people, crushing the hearts of comic fans in Japan and beyond.

The New York Times reported Friday that 20 of the victims were women, and that twice as many women as men work as animators at Kyoto Animation. None of the names of the people killed in the fire have been released.
Witness accounts and reports suggested the man had a grudge against Kyoto Animation, but police only have said the suspect, who is still hospitalized, is a 41-year-old man from near Tokyo who did not work for the studio.

Later Friday, Kyoto police identified the man as Shinji Aoba, according to the Japanese broadcaster NHK and other media. The reports, quoting an unnamed source, said Aoba spent three and half years in prison for robbing a convenience store in 2012 and also had mental problems. Police would not immediately confirm the reports.

The man told police that he set the fire because he thought "(Kyoto Animation) stole novels," according to Japanese media. It was unclear if he had contacted the studio earlier.
The company founded in 1981 and better known as KyoAni made a mega-hit anime series about high school girls and trained aspirants to the craft.
The shocking attack left another 36 people injured, some critically. It drew an outpouring of grief for the dead and injured, most of them workers at the studio.
Construction worker Takumi Yoshida, 23, was a fan. "I am shocked and I'm sure for their families it must be very difficult. So with those feelings in my mind, I brought flowers," Yoshida said.

Anime fan and university student Yuki Seki traveled from nearby Hyogo prefecture to pay her respects. "After properly recovering while taking their time, I hope Kyoto Animation can once again share their power and energy with us," she said.
About 70 people were working inside the 3-story Kyoto Animation No. 1 studio in southern Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, Thursday at the time of the attack.
The arsonist arrived carrying two containers of flammable liquid. He shouted, "You die!" as he entered the studio's unlocked front door, dumped the liquid and set it afire with a lighter, according to officials and media reports. Police at the scene confiscated the gasoline tanks, a knapsack and knives, but have not confirmed they belonged to the attacker.
The blaze blocked the front door and quickly engulfed the workspace, rising up the stairs to the third floor, sending panicked employees fleeing. Some were able to escape by crawling out of windows. Many tried but failed to escape to the roof, the reports said.

The suspect fled but was chased by studio employees who eventually caught him. He collapsed to the ground outside a house and was quickly surrounded by police.
"They are always stealing. It's their fault," he told policemen bending over and asking him why he set the fire, according to a witness who described the scene outside her house. The man complained bitterly that something had been stolen from him, the witness told NHK and other networks.
Neighbors interviewed by NHK said the suspect had troubles with neighbors at the apartment building in Saitama, north of Tokyo, where he lived.
One man told the broadcaster TBS that he had knocked on Aoba's door to ask him to stop banging on the walls. He said Aoba shouted "I will kill you!" and grabbed him by the hair and shirt.

Kyoto Animation's hits include "Lucky Star" of 2008, "K-On!" in 2011 and "Haruhi Suzumiya" in 2009. It has an upcoming feature film, "Violet Evergarden," about a woman who professionally writes letters for clients.
It's also done secondary animation work on a 1998 "Pokemon" feature that appeared in U.S. theaters and a "Winnie the Pooh" video.

Death toll so far is 34, by the way, one of the severely injured passed away, others will have to lose some limbs to survive.

What are the other incidents ? Given that Japan has a population of 130 million (half of the US population on that small island), I've always had the impression that there are incredibly few incidents there.

Some reclusive dude recently went knife-wlld on a bunch of school kids waiting at a bus stop. There's been a couple home killings/stabbings too from what I remember in the news.

Yeah, it's Japan, so the rarity of these things and the severity maybe creates a false negative impression of society as a whole when they do happen. I'm not saying what I said is true.

“Pudgy and unkempt, with blemished skin.”

After the Kyoto attack, Aoba told police he had done it because the studio had plagiarized his novel, Kyodo news reported. Kyoto Animation is well known in Japan and abroad for its series and movies, including “Violet Evergarden”, which has been on Netflix.

Aoba had lived in the Omiya apartment for about three years, the neighbor said. Japanese media said he had moved into it at some point following his release from his prison for robbing a convenience store east of Tokyo in 2012. He had also received care for mental illness, NHK said.

I wonder if that “novel “ even exists.

You'd think it's perfectly reasonable to call this psycho a 'nutter', which I did in their thread on this topic.

I was insta-banned for using 'ableist' language.

Yes, sorry UK & Ireland peeps, the word 'nutter' is ableist now.

And people bitch about the other place lol. At least there the worst thing that you see there is moderator sanctioned racism. Not speech policing to that insane level. Literal Ministry of Truth shit.

BTW it's 34 people now, 34 lives ended prematurely because of some psycho nutcase. If he had a legitimate case, he should have taken it to court.

I think what needs to come out of this is all Japanese entertainment media buildings need to install secure doors with CCTV, keycards or fobs. Practically all attacks like this in Japan have been otaku related.

problem is the Studio 1 building DOES have keycard requirement and what not. it's just so happened that on that day they were supposed to have reporters visiting for an interview, so they turned it off. and in any case, they found tools and knives in the suspect's backpack, so he coulda destroy the card reader or the glass front door and get in anyway. I think that it's an overall mentality thing, especially since Japan is usually so safe and peaceful, extra so in the areas that's not the city center, people just won't really take the precaution needed until something happened. I'm honestly not sure if they should change that or not for these sort of once in a blue moon freak happenings.

If anything they need a complete overhaul on fire safety.

to be fair, they do have proper fire exits (2 of them) and everything, but the suspect pour gasoline over those areas before he started the fire. plus, the place does meet the fire safety standard and everything, but it's just a lot of unfortunate conditions all mash together. I do agree that they should have fire extinguishing sprinklers even if they're 1 floor under the "buildings with 4 or more floors must have fire sprinklers" rule. it may or may not help with a gasoline fire but it's still something.

Yup.
They had no sprinklers. No way of breaking down a single door. (axe?)

they didn't really have much time to do anything thou. according to an accounting of the whole thing by a survivor who was working on the 2nd floor (google translation sucks but it gets the main point of the statement across), roughly 10 seconds after hearing argument from the floor below, he heard explosion, and then ink black smoke start billowing up and filling the whole floor. and one can only imagine how bad it gets up on the top around the only exit to the roof. I think I read somewhere that the door to the roof wasn't even locked, it's just closed. and if that's the case, those who died there most likely couldn't even see the door clearly and simply died trying to find a way to open the door, so fire axe won't be much help either.

Suspect in deadly arson attack on Kyoto Animation studio arrested

The arrest of Shinji Aoba, 42, came 10 months after he allegedly set the studio in Kyoto's Fushimi Ward on fire, killing 36 people and injuring 33 others.

The police had earlier planned to arrest Aoba, who is still largely bedridden, around January but arrangements were affected by the spread of the new coronavirus and his unstable health condition, according to investigative sources.

Following his arrest, Aoba was transferred from the hospital to a Kyoto police station where he will be questioned.

fuck him for killing so many innocent people. fuck him for destroying chance of another season of Dragon Maid and other beautiful anime. and fuck him for enforcing the stereotype of the fat, useless unemployed otaku/nutjob. I hope they put him on death sentence and he have to wait in jail every day without knowing when he'll be hang til the day it actually happens as I heard it's done over there. don't put him in a mental hospital because that's just a waste of resource.
