LAN Party - 12/23/2008

I made a thread for GWJ this week. almost no one posted :(

it's still the best place for good gaming talk.

they don't go off topic like giantbombcast or LAN party or the old brodeo, but they're damn good at articulating what they love and hate about games. and they have good weekly discussion topics.

I started listening to the Gamers with Jobs podcasts to try to fill the void the Bordeo left, and was pleasantly surprised. They're not that bad, and I do tune in sort of semi-regularly. However, the more I would listen, the less enthused I became, and realized some of the guys just really weren't "with it" when it came to gaming...

A specific example of this was a few weeks back or so when a listener wrote in noting the 10-year anniversary of the Legend of Zelda: OoT, and asked the crew to comment. I think that out of all of them, only 1 guy recognized the significance of the game; someone else thought it came out for Gamecube, and another person wasn't familiar with it at all or something. And this is Ocarina of Time we're talking about here, people. It was pretty embarrassing...

they're not really with it for nintendo gaming (or its history), it's true.

they mostly have PC gaming backgrounds from their younger years, so their knowledge is skewed in that direction. It certainly affects what they play now. there's very little JRPG talk on that show, for example.

@ bistromathics. ouch. two GWJ threads shot down in one day. My Christmas is slightly less merry now.

Haha, yeah I remember that episode. He was bitching about getting killed instantly whenever that part loaded up or something.

*sigh* Those were the days...

Ryan needs to provide more input! He never talks.

Wow, WTF man. Way to puss out. I like what you had before.

It's unfair to say the show is terrible, but it still feels like they are treading the same material every week. What's disheartening is that it doesn't seem like most cast members are even attempting to play any PC games. Anthony puts in effort, but everyone else is stuck in their own little world. The only things they can discuss together are a very narrow handful of titles that they've already discussed again and again. You can hear them scraping the bottom of the barrel, pulling out Starcraft 2 stuff to talk about even though the last new playable build was months ago.

I guess you couldn't blame them if the PC world was really dry on releases, but I can listen to other podcasts and find them discussing new, cool stuff I've never even heard of before.

when tina couldn't grasp why someone would want to play a football manager game, I shut this shit down. gawd gurrl...

if shes not a sports fan i could see why she would think that. to her it would be like playing a game that is essentially work.

however on 1upFM when someone said it's good to have skill in writing before gaming to work in the industry and tina says she didnt start writing when she was three...... :\ head asplode.

im half way through this podcast, at the part where anthony mentions stoner tinas head being filled with smoke and honestly it's not nearly as bad as the thread makes out. yeah there's too much cross talk and tina is giggling nonstop but it's not horrible.

i created a second life character to check out the world since i find the stories to be hilarious. if anthony or shawn took pics or videos post them up for us to see.

Lan party and 1up fm are really lacking in the strong personalities. The two main guys on 1up FM just sort of drone on and they start sounding the same eventually. Lan Party is great with Robert Ashley and I like Anthony as well but it just doesn't have energy. 1up Yours and GFW have people with strong personalities and Lan/FM sound too generic.

since ive got nothing to do this week ive taken to listening to every single cgw/gfw radio/brodeo/lan party i am up to 10/31/06, the halloween episode!

Yeah, I had tons of trouble at this one ridiculous area. But, FWIW, I did still enjoy the game overall, and I *really* liked playing the EE with the original Polish dialog and English subtitles.

wtf are you doing up at 12:30 am on Christmas?!

Also, penny arcade once referred to Alice as a "narcoleptic jedi"

First step towards any sort of redemption would be to ban any and all females...

Sorry, I love the ladies, just not on my podcasts...
I thought Jen was fine on most podcasts, even if some people didn't like her at times. It's just that they need to find the right people; gender has nothing to do with it.

I really like Tina when she is doing her job, ie. reading the mail on FM, talking about the community, etc. She is in touch with everyone and knows what is going on online. That said, I don't really know what se does on a PC podcast :/

The problem is indeed that they can't find the necessary people who knows enough about PC gaming and that are around enough, I think. And let's face it, it really isn't easy to follow up on Jeff Greene and Shawn Elliott.

I don't celebrate Christmas because I'm a Muslim. But I slept in till noon today and that was awesome. So I want to thank Christmas for the temporary relief from the winter break 8-5 job grind. I got more reiief from Chirstmas than both Eid's this year. Because it just so happened that the first Eid was during my midterms and the second right in the middle of finals week. So yeah, Christmas rocks.

the witcher has polish dialog? that's too pimp. If there is a console version with that intact I'll buy it purely based on that.

Ryan, Anthony, Robert, Matt, and Tina all work exceptionally well together IMO. Lan Party is still my favorite 1Up podcast and I listen to it as soon as I see it's out. There are bound to be weak episodes, it happened all the time on the Brodeo (as someone who listened to that since the beginning), especially when regular cast members are missing.

There's a people dynamic on these things, taking out Robert and Matt and adding in Alice apparently just skews the podcast too far into silliness - unless the majority of people are all playing the exact same game to have something to focus on - it's like a balancing act. Some of you are just too dramatic and emotional with these things for your own good.

i kinda think anthony and robert are on another level and the others... bring them down

i also wish they'd just start completely new, from scratch, whether the new podcast is like the brodeo or not. trying to ape another podcast with a completely new cast is always going to bring it down.

then again i'm just a listener. how do you calculate chemistry before launching a podcast? and maybe it is a grower. but if you're getting EGM live levels of unanimous hate something is probably wrong in a big way

Yeah, they just need to take a month off and rethink the entire podcast. Come up with a new name, new cast (with Anthony and Robert), new name, and a new direction in general. From the several episodes I've listened to, they're (unintentionally?) attempting to follow in GFW Radio's footsteps – PC discussion with the occasional console game mention and a fair amount of zany, off-topic banter. The thing is, it falls apart for multiple reasons.

1UP FM has carved out a decent niche for itself when its topics for discussion are identical to 1UP Yours. LAN Party ought to do the same thing; just replace 1UP Yours with GFW Radio. LAN Party needs to be a relatively fresh, unique podcast, or else it'll always be compared to the Brodeo one way or another.

Really? I thought this one was meh too, but still a considerable improvement over the last Bobito/Mattless Lan Party, largely due to Anthony. It was obvious that he took a lot of the criticisms thrown out to heart, and he was on his shit, can't be blamed for not having a lot to work with. Good work to him, especially for calling out a lot of the stupid shit said by some of the others.

It's great if you like it when podcast hosts laugh at their own lame jokes all the time.

I'm half kidding. I like GWJ most of the time, but the constant, loud, fake sounding laughter gets a little on my nerves.

Hopefully the LANparty will start to put it together, it seems real unfocused right now. Also the podcast is definitely lacking a leader at the moment. Ryan is too nice and soft spoken to take control of the group, someone needs to stand up guide the podcast in the right direction.
I would start by keeping the same formula as GFW. They seemed to keep to longer in depth discussions and tried not to drift off topic too much, or within reason I guess. Anthony and Robert tend to keep the topics rolling and the ladies need to find their spot and jump in.
I don't mind the off topic stories and comments, but it is all off topic at the moment.
The off topic stuff worked so well on GFW because Shawn Elliott was a brilliant speaker and a great story teller, combined with Jeff who brought it right back in line with the original conversation when needed. When GFW went off topic you were in for a treat. Adding Robert and Anthony in to the mix just added to great story tellers and personalities.
I still think Ryan, Anthony and Robert have a great voice and I'm liking that Matt is starting to make his own voice too.

I like the women on the show, but I would just say don't try and fit in so hard, you're gamers just like the rest of the guys, just jump in and force your opinion. To many women gamers think they need to justify themselves before they can be taken seriously, and I get the impression that is what's going on here too much.
Just get in there and make your voice, and opinion heard.

Also keep it too 4 people, more than that is a cluster fuck unless it's an established show and format with people that know how to handle it.

that, or put interesting ppl on the podcast :(

Robert, Anthony and Ryan are all good people and Matt is coming around. He will be a good ft with those guys. But Ryan needs to hand the show over to someone else to kick it off. Love him on the show but he is no hype man. :D

Yup, it wasn't all bad this week IMO. All that was missing this week was someone that could call out Anthony on some of his bullshit and it would've been great. That's not saying that Chuff was bad in any way mind you, just that whenever he'd go on a tangent no one would follow him. Robert and/or Matt are still vital cornerstones for this podcast.

I don't understand it either, I don't mind Tina at all. Alice isn't that annoying, but I think I now what the deal is though.
Robert=Shawn if his not on the podcast everyone cries. I like the guy, he knows what the fuck his' talking about, but I actually hate his voice! So different stokes I guess!

yep. not that the 1upyours earlier was very good, the ones with that many peoply on are always trashy-- and 1upyours is somewhat shit either way, but anyway I was listening to that earlier while destroying the allied team in armed assault and when david ellis decided to not be a part of that podcast for whatever reason, I did a silent "WO HO !" and crashed my helicopter in his dishonour. it's possible I actually was shot down, who knows.

It's not that GAF users don't like girls on podcasts, it's just that Alice and Tina talk too often on a podcast to which they contribute very little as far as gaming, and especially PC gaming specifically, is concerned.

Just in this episode, the team was trying to convince Tina that there were good games outside of the FPS genre. Alice, on the other hand, who has a lot more gaming experience and manages to contribute a lot better in the gaming conversations, for some reason kept interrupting Anthony's relevant points and leading the conversation astray to irrelevant topics.

Of course, lacking an entertaining personality like Shawn, Robert or Jeff contributes to dulling out a podcast. However, even the least enthusiastic or interesting personality can discuss a relevant or informative topic and keep the listener interested.

Again, I don't think gender has anything to do with it. Jane (I think that's her name, she did the 1up Show theme song) was on an early CGW podcast and she talked about a sex in gaming convention and although she was not an entertainer, "clown" personality, her discussion was informative, relevant and interesting.

I think that how Tina is trying to contribute to the podcast is quick witted humor. One reason that we loved Shawn Elliott was that despite his reputation as the "funny" guy, he could also bring it back to an intelligent discussion about many different topics. I think Tina tries too hard to be the funny, ditzy girl that it just comes off as immature and misinformed.

I hope I don't come off too harsh in criticism, I think that everyone of the podcast could improve and even with the current cast the podcast could gain the reputation of a GFW radio of an entertaining internet radio show. Certainly the early CGW episodes were not terribly exciting.

This, exactly. They have to at least take a break from podcasting. Buy them both a stack of PC games, and say " Here's your homework. See you next Christmas." Anthony trying to talk about Witcher while Alice was interrupting him with inane bullshit was ridiculous. The past 3 weeks I've been giving you guys the benefit of the doubt but you keep bringing these two clowns on who have next to no credibility on any of the topics they are speaking about.

Max Chill's voice is the liquid gods are bathed in. My only real gripe with Alice & Tina is that they're too snarky.

Oh for fucks sake everyone, quit bitching about the podcast. It's free, and nobody is forcing you to listen to it. You people act like Tina and Alice killed a member of your family or something. I have to say, alot of you guys sound pretty fucking sexist. I can understand the criticism about their lack of game knowledge (primarily Tina), but complaining about them giggling? They are young women, WTF do you expect? Also, they aren't the only ones on 1up that have displayed a lack of knowledge or experience about games at times, yet the guys seemingly get a pass. And yeah, this is a laid back podcast, so they joke around and shit, so what? Again, if its not your thing, listen to other podcasts, there are plenty of alternatives.

ahh... you're so poignant Merrick. Has anyone at 1up said anything about if there'll be any podcasts before new years?
