A month after shipping Gears of War 2, I joined WB Games as VP of their Seattle studios, including Monolith. Sadly, Monolith closed recently after over 30 years in the business. Today I’ll share some stories about Monolith, the challenges of working with a movie studio, the constraints that led to the Nemesis system, and for the first time I’ll reveal my crazy plan to save Shadow of Mordor.

The Closure of Monolith Studio

- The Wonder Woman game was canceled on February 25th, 2025, leading to the closure of Monolith Studio, which was a significant event in the gaming industry.
- The studio had not released a game since Shadow of War in 2017, and their focus on developing a new intellectual property that was not based on any existing franchises contributed to their downfall.
- The speaker reflects on their experience at WB Games, where they were tasked with creating games that supported existing franchises, and how this mission shaped the studio's culture.
- Monolith had previously produced several successful titles, including No One Lives Forever and the MMO Matrix Online, but their recent efforts did not meet expectations.

The Rise and Challenges of Monolith

- During the speaker's tenure, Monolith expanded rapidly, tripling in size and building a team that successfully shipped Shadow of Mordor, which became their most acclaimed title.
- The speaker shares insights into the challenges faced while working with the film studio Warner Brothers, including the constraints imposed by directors that affected game release schedules.
- The development of a Batman game, code-named Apollo, was shelved due to a lack of approval from Christopher Nolan after the negative reception of a previous Batman game.
- Despite setbacks, Monolith's team learned how to navigate the complexities of working with WB, ultimately focusing on creating unique game experiences that loosely fit within existing franchises.

Cultural Lessons from Game Development

- The speaker emphasizes the importance of prioritizing game development over strict adherence to franchise ties, citing Rocksteady's success with the Arkham series as an example of this approach.
- The culture at Monolith shifted towards creating games that were innovative and fun while still respecting the source material, as demonstrated by Shadow of Mordor's unique mechanics and narrative.
- The speaker expresses surprise at Monolith's decision to pursue a new intellectual property, arguing that the studio had previously learned how to balance creative freedom with franchise constraints.
- The narrative reflects on the complexities of corporate politics and the challenges game developers face in maintaining creative integrity amidst external pressures.

The Development of the Nemesis System

- The Nemesis system was developed in response to challenges in creating a compelling single-player experience that would encourage players to keep the game rather than return it.
- This innovative feature allowed for a dynamic experience where players faced unique villains that remembered their interactions, enhancing gameplay and player engagement.
- The speaker highlights the contributions of talented team members who were instrumental in the development of Shadow of Mordor, showcasing the collaborative effort that led to its success.
- The team was able to leverage constraints creatively, ultimately resulting in one of the most memorable game mechanics in recent gaming history.

Leadership Changes and Their Impact

- The speaker discusses their decision to leave Monolith to allow for new leadership that could provide the team with the time needed to develop their projects without the pressures of rapid deadlines.
- This decision was made with the hope that a new leader could shift the studio's trajectory and buy time for the team to create quality games.
- Tragically, the speaker later learned of the passing of Mike, a key figure in the studio, which marked a significant loss for the team and the culture they had built.
- The speaker reflects on the emotional impact of their departure and the subsequent events, underscoring the importance of leadership and team dynamics in the success of game development.

The Legacy of Monolith Studio

- Monolith Studio's closure is a poignant moment in gaming history, as the studio had been a significant player for over 30 years in the industry.
- Despite its end, the speaker notes that many talented individuals from Monolith are now contributing to other projects, indicating a potential for continued innovation in the gaming world.
- The speaker expresses optimism about the future of these Monolith alumni and their ability to create beloved games moving forward.
- Ultimately, the narrative serves as a reflection on the challenges and triumphs of game development, the importance of culture in studios, and the lasting impact of talented individuals in the industry.

Film directors aren't game developers. Their input should be listened to, but they should have no say over the direction of a video game.
