[Laura Fryer] The Future of Xbox

Watching everyone discuss the stuff you tried talking to them about years ago before it was too late is pretty weird & actually boring .

I actually look forward to the battle of trying to make platforms unique across multiple hardware configurations.

Sell a great new controller that's going to be worth taking with you from place to place.

Almost every xbox gamer i knew went to pc. At 1st people were just crossplaying with pc friends but slowly everyone just switched over. Gamepass made it so you didn't even need to buy your games again. Discord made it easy to stay in touch with your friends still on xbox. They basically greased the wheels of the move. Better graphics, better game versions, better peripherals, better framerate, on a lot of games you already own. It was just easy to switch.

In what reality?

In this one. Sony is shrewd in trying to capitalize on GaaS titles, as this is absolutely what the kids are mostly playing. The problem is that Sony sucks really bad at it and will continue to fail miserably. But it doesn't mean that making another bloated AAA single player "experience" would be better for them. I think Microsoft is better positioned for the future of the market, regardless of whether Xbox "dies".

The future of Xbox is the same as the future of Sega. "Coming soon to a PlayStation of Nintendo system near you.".
I know it's different times and also not the same situation, but with SEGA it was actually pretty clear they're giving up with hardware and becoming a games publisher. Microsoft is sending mixed signals and having their (remaining) fans confused and worried for quite some time now.

Quite a few of us Dreamcast fans were clutching at straws and still holding out some hope after Sega discontinued their console…

I haven't liked Xbox since I had to replace my 360 3 times due to red ring, but I saw them going in this direction ever since 2013, I'm surprised it took this long for the majority to notice

It'll never not be funny to me that the 2 things, the ABK acquisition and Gamepass, that the most obnoxious XBox fanboys all wanted, flaunted, and acted like would be game changers will be 2 of the biggest things to causes their downfall…

The ultimate monkey's paw.

I have such a disdain for those people so fuck em…

Yes, they are fine. It would be preferable for them if Xbox Series was a success, but it wasn't so better to cut their losses now. Being a huge multiplat publisher is certainly not some horrible end.

In fact, I think their biggest mistake is that they didn't prepare for this multiplatform shift sooner, with more focus on Play Anywhere, cloud streaming and the type of console UI for Windows they are now working on. Even now they need to do a lot more with this.
Yet you gloss over, not you but many other "stand", that they in face are making a next gen powerful home console. It's just they've opened it up to more than one closed box. Not a hard concept to grasp.

It's just they've opened it up to more than one closed box. Not a hard concept to grasp.

We've seen how that plays out with Windows PCs, Windows CE PDAs, Windows Phone, and tablets. Once it's opened up to OEMs, it's a race to the bottom. Minimal standards with OEMs making whatever they want to maximize profits in an industry with slim margins. Microsoft's own flagship products (e.g. NOKIA Lumia 950, Windows Surface Pro) get buried under a sea of mediocre products and the product becomes tainted by poor user experiences of lower end devices.

Whenever I treat myself wirh a month of GPU and reconmect my XSX to my TV, I'm surprised how MS managed to not sell their console. It's a great piece of tech, it feels superior to PS5 in any way, controller feels sturdier, headset is way more confortable than the PS5 headset, the console itself has some amazing features, quick resume is such a great feature, I haven't had my XSX commected to anything for well over a year and quick resume still let me continue where I left off, it's amazing.

It's actually so good, I'd stream my PS5 to my XSX if it were possible, just because the controller is that much better compared to the Dualsense.

And Gamepass is, without a question, way better than Sonys PS Plus service.

Everything Xbox does it does better than the PS5, but still, nobody cares, unfortunately.

And tell everyone else to fuck off and spend +300/500 bucks?

So the same thing Sony would do? You realize that's exactly what console exclusivity is, right? I'm glad they don't though as a PC main.

Funny thing is people who say they are idiots and don't know how to compete and sell Xboxes would be the first to cry if their main focuses was to sell consoles.

Man, if you told me 6 years ago that Microsoft would soon own Zenimax and Activision Blizzard, and that they'd still be a distant 3rd and the future of their console business in doubt by the end of the generation, I'd have thought you're bullshitting me.

There's another timeline where Peter Moore stayed on at Xbox and Jack Tretton & Andrew House stayed on at PlayStation; and everything is awesome while they battle each gen out at 50/50 giving strong competition.

Helldivers 2 is a failure? GT7 is a failure? MLB The Show is a failure?

It's just funny how people always point to Concord, but never give SIE props for the GAAS they've put out which have performed better than most of MS's own, even some of the ones they spent billions to acquire. Which is another point: everything outside of Sea of Thieves & (arguably) Forza Horizon (if you consider it GAAS) that's been successful for MS, came from outside 3P studios they spent over $80 billion to acquire. That includes Mojang, Bethesda, Blizzard, and everything else.

At least SIE's successes in GAAS have come from IP they built from the ground-up, and they've got another success coming in Marvel Tokon next year. MS had to spend $80+ billion to be positioned well for what you think the future of the market is, and there is no guarantee some of those IP won't see contractions years out. SIE's mistake this gen with GAAS was putting too many into production at once, and most of those being no-name IP from unproven studios that were chasing trends instead of making visionary games.

And then the idiocy to cancel sure-money stuff like TLOU 2 Factions and the Spiderman GAAS, plus putting studios like Bend and Bluepoint on GAAS when they had no experience or pipeline in place to facilitate it.

It's nice there are dozens of you who feel this way, but if the Xbox was as good a product as you say it is, they'd still have a viable console on the market today.

Maybe your standards are different, maybe they are lower, maybe you are prioritizing other things. But the fact is, most people in the market see XSX as less valuable than PS5...that's why Xbox's sales collapsed last year after entering a steep decline in 2023...ironically right as PS5 supply finally improved.

Facts are facts 🤷‍♂️

IMO, The XBSX console did not fail MS, MS failed the console. It is a great console that was held back from its little brother and then forced to play as the backup dancer for Game Pass and day one PC. Then, to make sure it stood no chance, Xbox everywhere. Then, to really make sure it was dead, the stock dried up and the price was increased. It was doomed by Phailures.

Destin is such a shameless individual. Completely soulless.

What's worse is I can't think of a single individual, from what I have seen and read the past few years and who primary focus is Xbox/Microsoft coverage in the media, who isn't similar.

That's because they are all paid by Microsoft.......

You'll notice that there is no one in the media who gives a fuck about Microsoft and Xbox if they aren't on Microsoft's payroll

It's the worst because you would hope there would be at least a minority that would be a little sincere and have a more critical eye but no.

And their arrogance too, I don't think I would be courteous in the slightest if I met any of these people.

They have all played a part in this mess even if it's close to minuscule in the grand scheme of things.

I hope, if a situation occurs where they shift focus to another platform , those fan bases/communities don't engage with them.

Imho they failed miserably during XBone, for obvious reasons (Kinect, forced online gave them a horrible launch, and games were reason for a horrible generation) and couldn't get back to their X360 success since then. Doesn't change the fact that the Dualsense feels like a cheap peace of plastic compared to XSX controller or that the PS5 headset painfully tries to squeeze the eyeballs out of my skull and has shitty buttons for the settings while the XSX headset feels so much more comfortable on my head and the volume and balance dials are ways better than buttons. XSX simply has no games, the age of exclusive games is over for both Sony and MS so they just can't win a battle that was lost last generation.

Also doesn't change the fact that PS plus premium is a terrible service compared to Gamepass, All great first party games on XSX are on GP day 1, never happened on PS plus.

That's what happens when all your games are on at least one other system, most of those games have been mediocre and you refuse to compete with your direct competition, Sony. So stupid. You watch an Xbox E3 from the 2000s, and they were all over competing, but with Phil, it's just bending over and accepting whatever.

And i don't even give a shit what happens to Xbox. What i care about is Sony, because if these fuckers have no real competition, the future rough.

The strategy seems clear at this point...

MS are doing the heavy lifting of building a purely gaming focused version of Windows and contracting AMD to build a next generation APU that will go inside an ASUS designed 'console' to sit under the TV and which will boot directly to Gamespass.

Wonder what it will be called?

ROG Xbox Strix - cheaper console
ROG Xbox Strix X - pricier console
ROG Xbox Ally - cheaper handhald
ROG Xbox Ally X - pricier handhald

Only going with "Strix" as ASUS kept the "Ally" branding for the handheld.

I had to work over the weekend so I just watched this. I was expecting something interesting since I usually like this person's videos and reactions on here seemed to suggest it was a hard hitting and thoughtful video. But man, this was total shit. It was insanely biased and overly negative, to the point that she literally says she is biased in the video and it really, really shows.

She says Play Anywhere is just marketing, which is just objectively a lie. Play Anywhere is their classification for dual entitlement on console and PC. It's a real thing with monetary value. You buy a game on Xbox with that classification, and you also own the PC copy. They ARE trying to market it and they have a marketing campaign, true. But it's a real thing. There's honestly not much that gets more "real" then getting literal free entitlement copies of your games for nothing.

She claims you should get Linux instead, which is fine if you want it. Then in the next sentence says she needs an additional dual boot machine to play all her games, and breezes past it like it barely matters. Okay, cool.

Then says the ROG handheld is totally pointless, but then right after that says ASUS is great at hardware. Xbox is exiting hardware because it's not selling enough, so yeah, they're doing a partnership with existing hardware makers just for the people who want it.

She mentions that Xbox has no games and maybe next year, in a year with probably 10+ first party games releasing. Literally, 10. Even if you're an Xbox hater how does that seem accurate to call a year with 10+ games "no games" and "maybe next year." It's ridiculous, not even counting stuff like publishing Ninja Gaiden 4.

Her biggest example of MS crushing it on games is Halo 1, which is fine. But doesn't mention anything about the state of Bungie themselves right now; or the state of PS Studios 1st party when compared to the output Xbox has this year even as a 3rd party publisher. Nothing.

She brings up how the 1st Xbox team wanted to make it a Windows Lite box, which is a cool bit of history because they clearly were right. But then doesn't even bring up the fact that this is what MS is doing right now. Can't even mention it.

Then brings up the fact that games jumped to $80, and yes I have no problem with criticizing that. I'm not buying anything for $80. But she doesn't even mention that Nintendo did as well, and she seemingly is totally misquoting the context of the conversation completely.

She mentions the Xbox handheld doesn't have full BC, which is a point I've criticized as well, but then doesn't mention they just announced a chip partnership with AMD for exactly that for PCs, and it's unclear if we'll see that for a handheld in the future. Doesn't even mention it.

She talks about keeping exclusives but doesn't even mention the exclusives MS has tried for 5 years not turning the business around. They have to adapt and try something else, which is usually the point of her videos is advising developers on being fluid and adaptable - except here where her bias is the only thing on display. Doesn't mention that 3rd parties are all moving to a PC / console model with less exclusives. Doesn't mention any changes in the industry at all to give even a tiny bit of context usually seen in her other videos. Doesn't mention the bulk of growth for software sales being in Asia in regions without consoles.

Honestly a completely shit video, so of course Timdog loves it. Everyone's favorite person on here. It's a completely different industry from the time when people could put out shit like Crimson Skies and act like you have a lineup of games. Embarrassing and shallow video trading her credibility for a chance to show off her biased takes. Everyone has known Xbox is exiting hardware for over a year. This is late, and missing any kind of balanced take on the situation, and has at least 2 straight up false and misleading claims that are a core part of the video.

This made me laugh. It's all fun and games on Linux until shit doesn't work. That's why I'm getting a Windows handheld in the near future.
