Laura Fryer - The Games Industry Elephant

At the Game Awards, Swen from Larian shared the secret for winning Game of the Year. It sounded simple enough, so why are games like Avowed and Assassins Creed Shadows already mired in controversy? What happened to common sense around content choices and why would a leader get into a public fight with Elon Musk? Let's discuss the Elephant in the Room using real examples from Gears, Fighter Ace and a little-known project that Xbox decided to pass on.

The incentives that are lobbed by acquiescing to the consulting firms is the biggest problem. The firms themselves care only for the maligned message they want to spread and care nothing about the game itself that is being worked on while the companies only care for the profits... This leaves the dedicated devs that do care with the frustrating task of making their games worse as a result. From what i've noticed the GAAS games seem to have better protections against the consulting firms because the whole point of those products is to design it to milk the userbase as much as possible.

I like this woman's videos. I've always found them insightful, especially with her background in the industry.
Yeah, makes such a difference when people are able to call on real world expertise and experience to contextualise a lot of this.

She's also not brash, obnoxious or loud or farming engagement. And to be honest it helps us all when we have voices like this who speak over those labelling everyone as bigots and racists.

"If you're wondering why I'm optimistic, it's because I believe in people. I think there are only a few people causing this divisiveness. It is not the majority. Most people want things to be better, and so they will be. And I believe we will eat that elephant together one bite at a time."

That was a good video, and perhaps it's her age and experience but her views chime with mine. I'm pleased to have lived through enough decades of games simply being fun - rather than being polarizing.

Both sides on this argument go too far. For people like me who just want to innocently enjoy the hobby like they did as a kid, coming on to forums like Resetera and Neogaf can feel like entering a warzone.

Just shows how immature that lead dev on avowed is. The fact he doesn't give a shit about the whole team and believes it's more important to express his views on the world regardless of how much negative impact it places on the game and workers. But, that's the mind of these people today. It's all me me me.

She sounds like a woman who worked in the industry based on her own merits and ability, and was not a diversity hire. That's why she makes so much sense. She's from a time before a lot of the bull shit infested the industry, and sadly it seems like people like her are working in the industry less and less.

I'm playing BG3 right now, and while it's not woke, I do sometime question why all the women are warriors and the men can't wield a great swords.
