I love spirit tracks's main story. I hate the train-sidequests. Especially because failing one means losing 10 minutes of my life. Carrying 20 melting ice blocks from A to B is not fun. Especially since you have to micromanage speed and canon all while constantly shifting your route to avoid the 1HKO enemies.

I really dislike the train people concept. It's pretty ridiculous, even for Zelda standards.
But imo, Horse >>>>>>>>> Train > Bird >>> Boat. I played Spirit Tracks until volcano segment because of a problem in my DS. But the game was fun until there.

On a related note, to be brutally honest, I think TP is my favorite Zelda game.

The most fan-service shitty pseudo-west-malepowerfantasypondering-gritty zelda you meant, surely. It was so bad it was the only game i ever sold, and a week after getting it too.
It was so offensive to all that zelda mean i still get disgusted thinking about it at this day, and while SS isn't a good zelda (it had 0 exploration, but at least it had atmosphere) it's stellar in comparison.

Tbh i didn't like either of the 3DS zeldas only because i found those games chores to play with their control set. Touch don't sit well with long games to me, but they weren't bad zeldas.

Volcano is when they start putting you on fetch quests, which are the worst parts of that game. Other than that, it's really really good. That said, I like phantom hourglass more. I didn't mind the repeat dungeon, either. I liked trying to improve my time each run.

Nice to see some love for ST. I've always felt that PH was sort of a test bed for a much stronger game and ST is THAT game. It was Nintendo building upon what was promised.

It kind of bums me out that games like SS and ST are going to go ignored as time goes on because of Nintendo's constant need for hardware reinvention and the tepid receptions those games received. I feel like those games were on the verge of charting a new course for the series, but since touch controls and motion controls are on their way out, we'll probably never anything like them again.

Even though I loved ALBW, it did kind of feel like Nintendo was going to back to the well. It didn't feel as daring. It felt a bit too familiar. I don't want to see Zelda doing so many callbacks.

In terms of SS, I really wish they would have continued with the motion controls. I felt like they were on to something there.

wut at your description of TP

I heard ST was really good. Man, I really need to start playing the DS Zeldas as those are the only ones I never played!

''In my opinion.''

Since the world is so big, I'm expecting different music for different regions.

Or SMW-Yoshi that shit and layer different flavors into the main overworld theme. Percussions, rhythms for the desert, deep base sounds for the water area, sweeping strings for the open fields, minimalistic woodwinds/flutes for the foresty areas, piano for the snowy mountains.

I heard ST was really good. Man, I really need to start playing the DS Zeldas as those are the only ones I never played!

Spirit Tracks is the shiznit! Dat companion-Zelda.

Jesus, dude, it's an opinion. There's such a thing as respectful disagreement.

Although the part about TP being a male power fantasy in contrast to every other game n the franchise was pretty funny. Good one.

I am personally not the biggest TP fan due to its flawed narrative, some tedious designs, less than stellar balancing of item usage, etc (although I enjoyed the game), but I don't don't think what is present in TP is gritty. I do agree that it is too fan servicey.

By usual AAA western standards, TP is not that much pseudo-west-malepowerfantasypondering-gritty, like you say.

The SS soundtrack, my opinion of it is that it is really 50/50. The really great pieces are amazing, and the forgettable ones are really forgettable.

I think I've seen every adjective applied to every aspect of every Zelda game in the last five pages alone.

Zelda really is everything to everyone.

What...

C'mon. :S

Link spends the majority of the game getting dominated by some random imp thing. ...And the scenario writer was a woman. @___@

Yeah, it it had been a male power fantasy, Zelda and Illia would have been naked.

How is TP a male fantasy? The main character spends half the game being literally ridden, not the fun sexy type, by a woman who provides the main method of offense and the overriding agenda.

Hey guys, quick question, do you think A Link Between Worlds would be a good introduction to 2D Zelda's? I've very briefly played (more like aimlessly wandered around) the start of Zelda 1, and started Minish Cap and Four Swords Anniversary and lost interest pretty early.

I don't know if it's the games I've played or if I just don't like 2D Zelda. But I figure that the critically acclaimed, most recent in the series would be a good test? I might pick it up next year with a New 3DS (and MM3D).

I love the 3D games I've played though, so can't wait for the new Zelda. I've only played OoT3D, Wind Waker HD and Skyward Sword but I enjoyed them all (although I think the former two are superior. Can't decide which I like more though).

No. Link to the Past or Link's Awakening would be better introductions to 2D Zelda IMO.

Start with A Link to the Past. Its the best start for the series as a whole.

What was it about Minish Cap that lost you interest? I am hoping that by identifying whatever it was, I can tell you which game you should play.

I think aLttP is a typical by the standards of 2D Zelda games. It's excellent, but from a slightly different mold. Genuinely, the Minish Cap is perhaps the most essential Zelda handheld experience in terms of playing to the series' more frequent tropes. Failing tMC, I'd go with Link's Awakening DX over aLttP.

Guys, I think it really depends on the person whether ALttP is a good intro game. If you are not looking for difficulty in Zelda, I can tell you, the beamos and conveyor belts are going to get old real fast.

Hmm, that's a good question. I think it was a mixture of the world not pulling me in and me not being super impressed by the central hook (the whole being made tiny thing). I don't know, I just couldn't find a reason to keep playing it, it didn't give me the motivation :-/

Thanks for the replies guys. Seems like maybe I should look into Link to the Past on the WiiU VC first?

You know what? I think Link's Awekening is pretty good in that case, and I love the narrative in this game. The Oracle Games are difficult, especially the final bosses, but I consider them the best of the 2D Zeldas. ALttP is quiet different from future Zeldas because it has remnants of the old Zeldas, basically a lot of things are obstacle courses, but if you like that, go for it. Edit: If you are looking for something simple, ALBW is great. Same overworld as ALttP, but the game is not going to destroy you. Dungeon puzzles are simple, but the dungeons themselves are tightly designed.

Yeah, it's a fine starting point.

Thinking about it, the thing that I really enjoy in the 3D Zelda's isn't the puzzles or dungeons or anything. It's the exploration and world. In OoT, I loved just riding around on Epona finding a new location or town to explore, with npc's to meet. Sailing around in Wind Waker, watching the weather unfold and finding new islands, looking around all the little nooks and crannies in windfall island, I loved all that.

Skyward Sword had a lot less of that type of thing unfortunately, but even on a smaller scale, skyloft was fun and the lumpy pumpkin was one of my favourite places in the game.

The 2D Zelda's seem to focus on different things, like Puzzles and dungeons. Am I right in that assumption?

ALBW and ALTTP both have a high degree of exploration. You can't go wrong with either, just depends on whether you want a more modern take or a classically challenging experience.

Obviously the worlds aren't quite as immersive as a 3D title, but they put you on a much longer leash.

Not really, if anything the 2nd games are more exploration base while the 3d ounces are puzzle base

Could you guys imagine if Nintendo combined Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass (with a fixed Ocean Temple, and proper controls) into one consecutive HD game?

That would be amazing.

Been having a few thoughts about the Zelda timeline recently. The first few games in the timeline had larger, advanced-tech worlds and societies, whereas the later games had really crapsack, low tech worlds (particularly the first game, which is a chaotic wasteland, and Ganon is a senseless maniac by this point). Majora's Mask is an exception, but it's also in a parallel world--one devoid of war, it would seem. Based on this game's high tech stuff and really huge world (as well as right handed Link), it's plausible that it takes place early in the timeline, possibly right after Skyward Sword.

What I'm starting to think is that the whole Zelda timeline's theme about how war, power, and greed will impede progress and destroy everything society has accomplished. Termina is relatively free of any of the flaws that late Hyrule seems to have, yet it also seems to be devoid of a Ganondorf, Royal Family, or a Triforce. Does this really mean anything significant? I'm not sure; I'm just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks.

Well...

Demise cursed Link and Zelda. And since Zelda is the ruler, she and Link are kind of doomed to devolve into nothing taking Hyrule with them.

...Eek. e___o

That's definitely an interesting take on things, but highly unlikely. Probably more just the simple problem with sequels and technology of games themselves. The more games in the series the more they need to introduce new and interesting elements to keep it fresh. Plus with each generation they can have the game do more complex and innovative stuff that previously wasn't possible.

As well I'd say there is a big mix between technology and earlier titles. SS had the crazy time crystals and robots but it wasn't worlds apart from later games. OoT, tMC, FS were all rather low tech. Meanwhile TP had some advanced tech, as did PH and especially ST. It's really only the original series timeline that is exceptionally low tech, which I attribute to my first statement. Everything post OoT has had varying degrees of interesting doodads from cameras to trains and canons and all sorts of weird advanced tech. Zelda U could really fall anywhere right now. Sequel to SS, prequel or even sequel to TP, or something altogether unexpected like a sequel to the original LoZ world.

Imo TP is not awesome as Oot and MM but still better than SS and WW(which are very good games).

I just played 1 hour of Phantom Hourglass and it wasn't a bad hour.

It's an interesting take, nonetheless. But it really only applies to the "Link fails" timeline; in the other two, the efforts of Link and Zelda keep Hyrule/the world relatively well off. Spirit Tracks's world in particular is relatively high-tech, and it's at the end of a timeline branch currently. If there is an (unintentional, I assume) theme to pull, it would be that "war, power, and greed will impede progress and destroy everything society has accomplished" if left unopposed.

It's a pretty common theme in media, so it's not too surprising to see it show up even in places where it was most likely done unconsciously.

I think that's kinda normal. Looking at a lot of anime there's a ton of advanced old or extinct civilizations cliches. Also let's not forget the myths and stories of Atlantis and how it was possibly an advanced civilization for its time then wiped away from history.

The wait is going to kill me.

The TGA video came out less than a week ago and I honestly feel like it's been a month already.
