LEGO Dimensions |OT| Not Lost Dimensions

Ordered some Plano 2-3700 storage cases and was able to fit everything I've unboxed in two, minus a couple vehicles that were too big. It's so much better than having everything in plastic baggies which is what I had before. I've got two more cases so hopefully they'll fit everything else I've got to put together.
Game wise I think I've almost beat the main story, though I'm far from 100%.

For two years, the development slate at TT Games was almost entirely focused on LEGO Dimensions. It was their main show pony, and took all the attention. The game was massive, and required hard work from many of the teams inside TT Games. The size and scope of the game was a lot to organize and run, but the end result was a wildly entertaining game. The idea was to make this game the infinite focus of TT, using it as the ultimate platform to roll out every large title moving forward.

Fast forward to 2017. The new year has come, and TT Games holds a company meeting to review the upcoming gaming slate for 2017 and beyond. LEGO Dimensions went from the largest, highest priority spot on the lineup to barely a footnote, shadowed by new and more promising projects. Overnight, it seemed the game went from being top dog to bottom rung.

While the game hasn’t been formally cancelled, it’s been moved to the back burner of TT Games’s large, constantly-cooking stove top of LEGO gaming franchises. Teams are being mostly reassigned onto new projects, and development has slowed to a crawl. It’s been marked for dead, and it doesn’t look like there is any coming back.

It appears TT Games’s goal is to put off the “official” cancellation of the game for as long as they can until the time comes when they have no other option but to announce it. They already seem to be stretching their content out long after its original release date to make it look like there is still more to look forward to, when ultimately they are just prolonging the cancellation announcement.

How well informed are brickstolife? I have no doubt there's some truth to what they're saying, but I'm hoping it's more knee jerk and the 3 year plan is still going to be finished.

On the "new and more promising projects" I'm imagining one will be announced soon? PotC 5? TT pump out a lot of games, but I can't imagine their recent stuff (Harry Potter remaster, upcoming City Undercover 'remaster' and Lego Worlds which was in early access for 2 years) took anywhere near the manpower of other releases.

I just got a PS4 Pro and noticed that cheaper Dimensions starter packs are starting to be rolled out. I also have a good PC.

So Lego Worlds or Dimensions?

From the same page (Google cache):

What’s Next For LEGO Dimensions

The remaining waves of packs will slowly be released until the end of the summer when Year 3 should have been kicking off. Dimensions isn’t done dropping surprises yet either. There’s still some magic left in the works, with characters from existing franchises yet to be announced and a Year 2 add on character that we’re certain will be a fan favorite.

We still have a lot to look forward to with this game and the many different adventure worlds and abilities we’ve yet to unlock. For the curious, we have a full article coming soon that will detail everything that Dimensions had planned for Year 3, and how the team was working hard to make it happen.

Remember, if you’re upset about this cancellation do not take it out on the team at TT Games. They did all they could to make good on their promise of three years of content. There’s no bag guys here; it seems the market simply found (and perhaps surpassed) the limit of what it could bear. Remember that moving forward, and try to remember that there are great things coming from TT Games, with some wildly fantastic full LEGO game titles!

As we write this nothing is completely in stone, but the outlook is grim. Miracles can and do happen, and the LEGO Dimensions format is something that may possibly work in the future on a digital only platform, but for now it seems our favorite game of the past few years will slowly fade away.

You can probably snag a Dimensions collection for decently cheap and get a TON of value out of it. I've considered selling my nearly complete collection a few times, but I haven't muscled up and done it yet. It's a lot of fun for what it is, and there are some absolutely amazing gems in there (Portal, Sonic, Simpsons <minus the lack of voice work>, etc).

Stinks if it's really ending soon. I loved how many surprise characters they've added. Really cool IPs that I could never dream of.

But it also means super great sales on past sets so I can grab EVERYTHING

I heard lego dimensions portal is a mini sequel to the serie?? How is this game available? I don't see it on the ps4 psn store, I guess it's just physically?

You need the Lego Dimensions starter pack and the Portal pack.
It's a mini sequel for sure, since it takes place after Portal 2 and has all the characters in it as well as the series's staple humor and puzzles, but it's much easier and quite short (1-2 hrs).
You could always YouTube it cause it's gonna be like a $50 investment if you get those two things on sale.

too bad! I guess i'll do that, thanks!

As much as I love Dimensions for letting LEGO release a lot of minifigs for franchises I doubt we'd ever get real LEGO sets from, I think I did prefer when the LEGO games were released more often and as full games.

I probably would have bought a LEGO Ghostbusters game that had 1,2, and the reboot in it, instead of the $50 it cost for just the Reboot movie.

We did get a LEGO Avengers and Force Awakens after Dimensions was released (neither of which I bought because of my crazy backlog), but it still felt like most of their effort was spent on Dimensions content which I only recently purchased.

I own most of the Dimensions stuff but found the full games more enjoyable to play. And keeping up with Dimensions turned into a mess... the collection is too big to display properly where we actually play the game, so most of it got pitched into a cabinet. Sorting through all of it to play the game and find the right ability isn't exactly fun.

Best Buy has a sale going on if anyone needs to pick up the story packs. They're all $20 off and if you buy one you get a fun pack 50% off

That sale has made me very tempted to get it again, because I sold my lot a while back. I really like some of the characters they added in year 2, but man...the problem I have with this game is the stupid mini games they put in it that require juggling the figures from one section to another. I just found that so stupid, and made it so that I always had to keep the thing right next to me running the cord across the floor. I wish I liked this game more.

So I just finally watched the LEGO Batman Movie and I loved how many Dimensions properties were in it!
Makes me really curious to know if
The Matrix
was a planned world for Year 3 since a character from the series was featured heavily in the movie.

Well Year 2 was all in on 80s nostalgia, I could see Year 3 being full of 90s nostalgia stuff.

But is there even going to be a year 3? I thought LEGO Dimensions was pretty much done after year 2?

If that has changed, and TT is going through with year 3, that would be awesome.

There WAS going to be a year 3, but it doesn't look likely now. The packs have been shelfwarming a LONG time around here. Then again they are rarely on sale either.

I don't think I can do this series anymore. I have nearly everything (including Green Arrow), but the organization is just a nightmare. I hate having to sort through to find what I need/want. I'll probably unload it soon. Great game with great properties, though.

They planned 3 years from the start.

Personally, I hope they revise whatever plans they had and go all in on Disney now that they've abandoned toys-to-life. Get Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Disney + Pixar in there and holy shit.

I mean, would it? WB and Lego each already have Disney/Marvel/Star Wars licenses.

I am not sure, but I think the Toys to Life license would be a different ball of wax. Like with LEGO Star Wars sets, the license only covers making Star Wars sets, but they can't make singular LEGO Star Wars mini-figures, as they are considered as ‘action figures'.

It's very possible those would fall under that. That's the sticky part of Toys to Life. It is a video game, where TT has the license to make Star Wars video games, but do they have the license to make the mini-figures for the game?

But like I said, I would love to see LEGO Dimensions continue, and especially using those huge franchises. I just don't think it will happen. :(

Since even Fun Packs come with a small Lego set, doesn't that technically skirt around that action figure caveat? That said, I know licensing shit can get maddeningly obtuse (for some reason it's basically impossible to sell a soundtrack CD AND offer it in a bundle with a game or movie for example), so yeah haha.

I don't even have half of everything but I feel your pain. The characters are fine but the vehicles! They're mostly useless clutter aside from maybe 1 ability in a single form.

I picked up this from Amazon a couple months ago for storage and it has worked out pretty great. You can't display the figs and vehicles and it won't hold all of them (I finally completed my whole collection over BF, even Supergirl and Green Arrow, Supergirls power was annoyingly required quite a bit in the new packs) but it will hold almost each fig and vehicle you need to cover pretty much all required abilities. I'm still thinking of picking up another one though to fit the rest of my collection in for storage, these are made to stack on one another so that is a nice touch.

As far as season 3 of Dimensions, i'm not expecting it. These drop so hard and fast in price and wave 1 went out like a fire sale that I really don't think these are selling like they want or expect. The toys to life bubble has popped. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be ecstatic for a third season because of the figs they keep putting out, the game itself is getting really repetitive though. The new characters are neat for a hot minute but you quickly realize these are just cosmetic changes to the exact same gameplay, powers and puzzles you have done a million times before. I honestly feel not upgrading the core game and mandating everything work with the base game was a mistake in that regards not allowing for major overhauls or much needed infusion of something new.

Plus my biggest complaint has never been fixed, a digital version of the game or install so I don't have to keep that damn disc in the system to play.

Star Wars and Marvel being added to Dimensions is a win/win for everyone.

Disney got out of the Toys 2 Life market, but they can still make money off their licenses by allowing Telltale to incorporate their stuff into this game. And they have to do nothing, except sign off on it. This is the main reason they dissolved their studios, so they could license out their properties to other studios and cut down costs.

Meanwhile, TT already has assets created for Marvel and Star Wars. They have multiple games where they can pull the 3D models from and come up with levels and characters, etc... creating an OZ world is way harder to do from scratch, than pulling pieces from 6+ Star Wars games and piecing them together.

And LEGO already has the toys created for both series. No new molds or production lines needed. Just new packaging and some tiny vehicles utilizing existing pieces.

The work is already done for the most part.

Here's my optimistic view of this situation:

I've heard that some of the licenses for Year 3 collapsed. And Year 2 needed to be spread out longer to compensate for these licensing issues. So, what if Disney and TT had talks and decided to fill in the Year 3 gaps with Star Wars and Marvel? And that because the talks were started in Year 2 when Disney Infinity collapsed, they need some extra time and Year 3 will be a HUGE send off for the series with the 2 most requested licenses being introduced.

LEGO Dimensions is still probably canceled, but they are going out with a bang.

That's my hope, anyway.

I feel like this was actually probably the plan about a year ago. However, with the bottom pretty much falling out of TTL, I think the dream is dead. I'll be shocked if we get a Year 3 at all.

I think they priced themselves out of the market. Yeah, TTL peaked, but there's still plenty of money being spent on it, but the cost of this either as a game or as Legos is just too much. Even when they are on sale they cost more than almost all the other TTL stuff does.

You sure about that? Infinity is dead. Skylanders is taking a breather. amiibo trudges along but it's certainly not a huge deal. Dimensions is almost certainly dead going forward.

I'm not saying there won't ever be another success story in TTL again. amiibo may succeed in its current niche. But it's otherwise a pretty stagnant category.

Really tempted by the Bestbuy 50% off sale on the LEGO Batman Movie pack, but I have too much stuff on my plate for more Dimensions stuff.

I hope that isn't a clearance sale and I'll be able to get it for that cheap later in the year.

Expect all of that stuff to go lower when Dimensions truly does get clearanced. Best Buy had Infinity stuff going for $1.79 toward the end.

I agree stagnant but I don't think it's dead like the guitar hero genre was dead. Infinity was killed prematurely; Amiibo is pretty successful. I haven't seen Dimensions numbers but if it's dead, I blame it on over pricing. I think the genre also suffers from console fragmentation, it's stupid that the bases aren't generic USB devices. I think the generation shift in consoles hurt the entire TTL genre because of that. People couldn't easily move to a new system so they just stopped buying altogether. I think conceptually though TTL will always exist, it's just too good and varied of an idea to go away completely.

I also think as much as Dimensions went all in on 80s nostalgia they missed out on the pc user base which tends to be older and would really love that stuff; I would have bought a ton of stuff for a pc version but have no console at all. I doubt a pc version would have made that much difference overall, but it's still an untapped market they would have gotten sales from.

I don't know about less, usually it's around 50% off. I kinda feel like that'll be the floor until they actually start to clearance them out.

I'm really glad I didn't buy the Lego Batman Story pack last week when they had it $20 off and a fun pack for 50% off.

Amiibo is pretty successful.

Is it? I mean, I'm not saying that they're losing money on amiibo or anything, I just sort of feel like people are still reacting to the initial amiibo craze that occurred when the first Smash lines appeared on store shelves and TTL was still in pretty good shape. Last I remember hearing at the end of the fiscal year last year was that amiibo was way down. Mind you, no games were releasing that meaningfully used them. That could admittedly turn around at any point. I'm just saying I don't get the impression that there's strong momentum there.

It has certainly lost momentum. But I think the hard focus on the Animal Crossing amiibo has started to make retailers a bit weary since that's pretty much 90% of the stock it seems. All the while the BotW and LoZ anniversary ones are rarely in stock.

I just think the perception that the market is dead is distorted by Disney bailing on Infinity, which was still a very healthy product. I don't think the market will die completely, but that's just a matter of opinion. To me, TTL is the natural evolution of toys and games and there will always be products and a market for them, even as individual properties come and go.

IIRC Disney Infinity was profitable, just not up the margins Disney expects as the massive toy company it is. They could make decent money selling Infinity figures or just put those factory lines to manufacturing any other old Princess/Star Wars/Marvel toy for higher profits. And it's also important to note that they didn't just bail on toys to life, they bailed on videogame development full stop.

TTL is definitely way down, but I don't think the situation is quite as dire as people may think.

I just bought the base game and was wondering what the consensus was on the best add on

I was hoping Sonic and Doctor Who are good.

Those are probably two of the best. Portal is also quite nicely done, though I like it's level much more than its open world. I think that which you think are best is likely based a lot on your interests. Unless your interests include back to the future, because that level just isn't very good. I'm partial to the Adventure Time set myself.
