LEGO Dimensions |OT| Not Lost Dimensions

Huge LEGO fan, but was put off by the costs of this game. Picked it up on sale during the holidays and resisted every temptation to go out and buy level/fun packs. Finished the excellent campaign... and I think I'm done with it.

I dunno... the adventure worlds are cool and all, but is there anything to really play for other than collecting gold bricks and completionist stuff? From what I played in the LOTR/DC/Lego Movie worlds it's all pretty mindless fetch quests.... that usually require characters I don't have. Would love to play the Back to the Future/Simpsons/Portal levels, but hear they're only 20 mins or so. Seems a bit much for $30.

Was this game a flop?

The BTTF level pack is short, but the other ones are longer. I think someone said the Doctor Who one lasts like two or three hours? I don't know why the BTTF one was so short, but it's the only one that's that small. The other ones are much more worthwhile.

The game wasn't a flop, but it's had a slow start. It's doing a lot better post-holidays since it sold pretty well for Christmas but I think in general people feel that the base game is too expensive at $100. Whenever it goes on sale for like $70ish it does really well, but at the normal price it's just not moving as much as stuff like Disney Infinity or Skylanders.

The big thing with Lego Dimensions is they're not going to be releasing new 'versions' of the game in the future. There's not going to be a Lego Dimensions 2 so much as they're going to be updating the game to work with new level packs, adventure worlds, etc. Though I know I and a lot of other folks are hoping for a followup story campaign at some point, not that I'm sure how they'll handle something like that.

But it mostly comes down to if you're going to enjoy the sandbox play or not. I like that kind of stuff, and the huge variety of environments and characters you can use makes it feel fresh even when you're doing the same kind of thing in a few different places. However, if you're not enjoying the adventure worlds, yeah you might just be done with the game at this point. I'd say you might want to check out a level pack or two if you can get them on sale, though.

Biggest issue with this game post-story is that there isn't anything to really play for. In LEGO Batman/Marvel there was incentive to earn coins/complete side quests to unlock more characters and content. There's a lot of content in Dimensions that is locked off to specific characters you need to buy, which only gives you bricks/minkits you can't do anything with.

There isn't even achievements/trophies to play for. So, really... it all just feels a bit empty and contrived (even for a toy to life game).

Every previous lego has been half the price, with all the additional content included. With LEGO Avengers coming out in a few weeks, Dimensions already feels like an outdated platform.

Dimensions probably had the best campaign of any LEGO game to date. Just wish there was a bit more to it afterward.

The Portal and Simpsons level pack both only took me 45 minutes to complete, so if the BTTF one is shorter than that, well that's shocking.

However, those two level packs I mentioned do open up pretty big hub levels, but I've already said in an earlier post why that doesn't excite me, and that I actually think the hub worlds are pretty boring and a waste of time unless you're an absolute completionist.

They might not be doing "Lego Dimensions 2, 3, 4, etc" per say but I would be shocked if they didn't release new story campaigns each year beyond just additional Fun/Team/Level packs. It's still too early to tell, the game isn't even 6 months old yet and we're not even at the half-way point of the announced additional content, so honestly who really knows. But I think it's way too soon to declare this a flop or success. Yeah it's got a slow start because of the steep price of entry but I'm pretty sure Lego expected that. They see themselves as a premium toy company much in the way that Apple sees themselves as a premium tech company. They view Lego Dimensions as its own platform and they've got three years of expansion content planned out, I think we should at least wait to see what their plans are beyond the first four waves of toys before making any kind of judgement.

The difference is that they're still releasing regular LEGO games like Avengers. The amount of content/characters that come with those just undermines Dimensions value even more.

I've just seen the trailers for this, I was expecting them to really cut back on the content of the other Lego games to push Dimensions but there honestly looks like there's probably more content in Lego Avengers than there is in Dimensions with every currently available pack combined.

You could probably buy it along with Lego Batman 3 and Hobbit for less than the cost of the dimensions starter pack alone. Obviously you wouldn't get any actual physical LEGO though.

Exactly.

Dimensions seems to have designed for toy collectors more than anything. To each their own... but I could care less about owning plastic toys. It's just a shame that Dimensions had the best story mode in any LEGO game, and so they're clearly putting the extra focus on the series. Lego Jurassic Park was a bit of a bore.

*City Undercover aside. :p

But yeah. As expected the idea of Dimensions "as a platform" was never going to materialize as some wanted. They should've stopped the individual games for a moment at least, because they end kinda diminishing the value of the level packs.

So...
Is there any sort of known glitch in the boss fight called "A Show of Strength?" I'm on the phase where he's flying around in a bird form and while flying monkeys are attacking you. There's this set of walls on the right that Wildstyle can wall jump up that I built, but try as I might, she never grabs the top bar to pull herself up. I keep jumping over to far and dying. Did anyone else have issues with this or am I just special? Frustrating as fuck.

I literally just did this part last night, and had the exact same issue. As Wildstyle, go up the ladder to the left, then use your double jump to go all the way around, bypassing the wall-jump you're supposed to use... That's how I beat it.

It's absolutely shorter than the Portal one. It's got a great hub world though. I haven't got the simpson hub to compare that, but the BTTF has 1985, 2015 and 1885 time periods, and lots of stuff to do in them all. My advice there would be just to get Doc Brown, who also comes with a time machine to let you get to the gated off time machine content as well as that hub.

Where I'm finding replayability is in revisiting levels I've played before with new people I bought and seeing what content I missed. Some of the gated off stuff is surprisingly meaty for a side area, like the docks in Ghostbusters. I'm going to go revisit a bunch of levels today, because I got given Unikitty, for example.

Excited to pick up the Ghostbusters level pack and Doc Brown this week.

Only ones I'm interested in after them is the Midway Arcade Level Pack and Aquaman (why oh why does a lot rely on Aquaman) but I'm sure I'll find a way to get some other packs down the road

Holy crap, did anyone take advantage of the expansion packs deal Amazon had a couple weeks ago? It was where you could get a bonus $10 discount on certain expansion packs. If so, check your invoices. You are probably getting an amazing deal on them.

For example, Ghostbusters was $29.99 so I figured $19.99 was a good price to preorder it. But since then it went on sale for $22.49 and the $10 promo isn't the sale price, it's a bonus discount on whatever price you bought it at. So they price matched it to $22.49 and kept the $10 discount which brings it down to $12.49.

I also did the DC Team Pack with the Joker which was $24, but with the bonus $10 brought it down to $14. Now it's on sale for $18.74 which they matched so I got it for $8.74.

Finally, I also did the Midway Pack which was $29.99 minus the $10 which is $19.99 but with the Prime 20% discount, it brings it all the way down to $13.99

For once, preordering really paid off!

Amazon is also price matching BB and TrU's half off on fun packs this week. Pre-ordered Cyberman and got Ghostbusters level pack for $22.50 bring it all up to $30 total. Great deal!

Just replayed the Ghostbusters level in the main game as someone said the Docks was incredibly large for a side area and I agree, there was a lot more there than I expected! It was a big surprise when the
Titanic showed up. I was thinking this might be a tie-in for a future level like the Jetsons and Flintstones side areas in the Simpsons levels but I then learnt the Titanic was in one of the Ghostbusters movies which was a shame. Can't wait to see if there's more tie-in areas!

The difference is that they're still releasing regular LEGO games like Avengers. The amount of content/characters that come with those just undermines Dimensions value even more.

They aren't the same kind of game. People need to stop comparing them that way. There are now two games types that Lego makes: Lego Games and a Toys To Life platform. Just because Disney Infinity exists hasn't stopped Disney from releasing games squarely based off a single movie or franchise.

Lego will continue to put out normal adventure games with tons of content that are tailored explicitly to one franchise per game. That is not what Lego Dimensions is, or ever set out to be. Dimensions is very obviously and unabashedly set up as: buy a toy, build it, put it on a portal, play with it in the game. It costs a lot of money because it's Lego. That's a no-brainer to anyone who has ever bought a Lego set in their life - especially a licensed set, which Dimensions is absolutely spilling over with.

If you want to play a game with every single Marvel character in it, buy Lego Avengers. If you want to play a game where you can build a Mystery Machine and have Gandalf the Grey drive it around Springfield with Peter Venkman and Chel from Portal in tow, then play Dimensions. Because of the way LD is set up as its own platform Lego can shove every franchise property they can get their hands on into it. That's something you will never, ever see in a standalone Lego game.

So yesterday, i was fooling around in the Simpsons hub world when in a garden area i find one of those multi colored cubes fenced off by what i was SURE was a silver cage. I then proceeded to use the taunt o vision, placed it near said cage and took it off to trigger the explosion.

NOTHING happened. at all. I was under the impression this would destroy SILVER bricks though, correct?

Anyone got an explanation for this or just a bug?

Took me a while to find the one you were talking about (just left of the portal, final house in the first row?) and the silver blew up when I removed the taunt o vision.

Did you place it close enough to the silver for it to blow it up? Tried using a different character or object that blows up silver (if you have one)?

My wife and kids have almost every LEGO games now with the recent sale getting The Hobbit. PS Now gets them Batman 1-2 (we have 3 on PS4), and Harry Potter 1-7.

The thing she hates about Dimensions is the constant changing of Legos off the base. We sit about 12 feet away and it breaks the experience. The puzzles seem forced sort of like how I read on an Amazon review where Nintendo could have released a game without pad use but force it on the player.

The game itself they love, graphics, story, gameplay, etc. but the base changing is annoying.

Is there any possible way to have the base hooked up wirelessly?

I disagree. I love how - unlike other toy-to-life games - you don't just slap the toy down and wait for them to die. The toy is an active part of the gameplay.

Is there any possible way to have the base hooked up wirelessly?
Not that I know of. I'd recommend getting a USB extension cord. Amazon sells an AmazonBasics one that's 10 feet long for under $6.

You need to be close to the base, not only are there areas where you need to move them around quite a lot, later sequences will require you to be reasonably quick at doing so.

Actually for now it IS the only one i have mainly because i haven't upgraded any vehicles yet as i am saving studs for other stuff right now.

I placed it right next to it as far as i could take it basically...

I will try again later though to make sure it wasn't just a fluke or something, but basically, it SHOULD have worked then correct? Taunt o Vision DOES kill silver bricks right?

Yes. Carry it near the silver bricks, then remove the Taunt o Vision from the base to make it explode. Sounds like you did it right, no idea why it wouldn't have cleared the Silvers.

Maybe a bug? I didn't have time to retry it yet but i used it yesterday in a story level and it worked fine...

Wouldn't surprise me tbh, i mean Lego games were always prone to having a TON of bugs, it's a marvel this one isn't TOO bad right now...

Played through Ghostbusters earlier, again kind of short but the ghost traps are fun, haven't looked at the hub in much depth though other than a quick fly through with Wonder Woman.
The audio is a bit poor though, it's sourced from the movie(s) but seems a bit flat.

Unrelated, the Cyberman figure is amazing. I want more of them.

Does anyone have any tips on getting Stud Breaker in Hub worlds? It's taking a really long time and it's the last gold brick I need for some Hubs (Wizard of Oz for instance)

Keep meaning to play this. I've had it since just after launch, but have yet to even set it up.

I'm looking at about 12 hours for the base game, right?

Dude get Wicked Witch she's total VIP. Can easily destroy silver bricks, flies and has some of Gandalfs powers. Plus, she's the only one that can open the Wizard of Oz hub world.

Yeah so i heard... I have her but didn't open the package yet since i don't wanna insta-invalidate all my other characters (kinda) if she can do almost anything.

Looks like I'm between a rock and a hard place, I went to download the new patch and it turns out my Wii U doesn't have enough room to download it. Since my external drive uses up both USB ports, I can't have both that and the base in at the same time. Plus my Wii U itself is the basic ones from launch, so Dimensions is literally all that's there.

Gonna have to either see about a new external drive or I might just cheese it and use a memory stick if I'm feeling lazy. I'm itching to give the Ghostbusters stuff a try, plus grabbing Sensei Wu with all this finally gets me the Ninjago content.

Just get a USB hub for the rear, which is what I did, or plug the base into the front USB port.

I was confused when you said front USB, but then as it turns out I never knew there were USB ports in the back of the console. 3 years and I never noticed until now.
Thanks for helping me out, even if it was a very trivial matter.

Kind of debating whether i should really shell out the 25 euro for the JW team pack or not... I mean, i come across more and more of those target switches and Owen would give me that ability (right?) plus i could cut vines and i'd have access to the JW hub world as well as the Gryo switches. Wondering if it's worth it hmmm. Wish we had sales over here, then the decision would already have been made :(

I don't know if this deal/trick has been posted yet for Target, but I wanted to confirm it works. I got 4 Fun Packs for $15, yes that's right. 4 for the price of 1!

Here's what you do, in case it has been posted here before.
1. Go to Target and price match the fun packs to $7.49 (Gamestop prices).
2. Download the official Target coupon app (Cartwheel) and use the 50% off Fun Packs coupon. (Technically you're not supposed to double dip, but the employee I was working with got approval from their manager, so YMMV).

Proof:
lx23GDR.jpg

Tips:
First Target I went to said I could only price match one item. Second one I went to let me do it because they were all different items (they differentiated them by their DCPI numbers). So I assume the first Target saw Lego Dimensions and thought it was all the same exact thing and couldn't price match that.

I would suggest not being too greedy. The employee is probably more likely to give you the deal if you only get a smaller amount (I got 4). Though I do plan on hitting up other Targets to finish up the ones I need to get 100% game completion.

So, are Gold Bricks needed for anything else in the game other than upgrading vehicles? If not, then i can upgrade away since that would actually benefit me quite a lot to finally get some abilities rolling that i am missing with actual characters.

Technically they're also used to upgrade gadgets (like the Companion Cube) too. ;) But yes, that's their sole purpose, so upgrade away!

I'm worried about the future of this game.

You've been able to get most of the figures for 50% off for many weeks, even pre-orders for figure packs not yet available at 50% off.

Will LEGO be doing more content for this game, and/or release a sequel in 2016? The enormous amount of sales has me wondering...

Other toys to life games have sales but not to this extent, especially not on pre-orders.

My five year old and I play this together. If this was just for me, I would have never purchased the game, but since my kid love Legos, I figured this is something fun we can play together.

When he plays alone, he can explore for hours. All he wants to do is ride the vehicles and crash into everything. He still doesnt understand there's a goal for each level. While we play the campaign together, I have to guide him on what to do.

There's so much to do in the game, seems like there's no end. This game is going to last us a good long while.

When I look at the $20-$30 lego sets, and then I look at the three figures you get for this game, I just wonder what they were thinking. Minifig collecting had never been that huge, and side by side with the Disney infinity stuff, it looks pitiful and drastically overpriced. I'm hoping they release some new sets that are actually decent lego sets and go along with the game, because otherwise I just question the viability. Have they released any sales figures at all?

It was overprice like a lot of LEGO set with licensed. Plus there is overload of "toys to life", there is also constant sale with Skylanders. My local stores have glut of all the product (beside the hard to find Amiibo) and I am sure by the end of summer we will have all these on clearance. I was in Arizona this week and went to local Target and they have a pile of Skylanders for 50% off.

I recently heard about hire a hero and am considering buying in. I know the price goes up each time you use it so which characters have abilities you'll use just a few times? I figure something like digging or laser is worth buying a character for but would prefer to not buy someone that you'll use a handful of times.

Just jumped in on the PS4. Have got:

Starter pack
Scooby Doo team pack
Doctor Who level pack
Unikitty fun pack
Stay Puft fun pack

Feel like such a kid again, it's great.

Not a completionist but hoping the hub worlds I can unlock will be a nice change of pace from my other current game (fallout 4).

Also my wife enjoys Lego games so we can play it together which is always fun.
