LEGO |OT 3| Build Hard. Buy Fast. No Mercy.

It's like they were trying to go for the Legoland castle approach where you have all these sets that could attach to other sets to make a huge castle...except none of the individual sets are that enticing

Yet. Lower the price enough and almost any set with good parts becomes enticing enough.

The ROI (return on investment) increases as the price goes down. This is the path to LEGO happiness.

Super annoying: FedEx/USPS decided they didn't want to ship to my address my Mirkwood Spiders just noting that they couldn't deliver to my address that they've always used to deliver me things -_-

After many calls to USPS and Fedex, Amazon customer service is looking into the case and will have a follow up for me tomorrow.

/vent

Anyway I'm really happy to be getting Barrell escape and Mirkwood army since I've been needing a lot of the parts I'm missing or need more of from both sets.

Put together the Winter Village cottage we bought last year (at an awesome discount). Pretty cool little set. Makes me want more WV stuff.

It's the best theme!

I need to buy the WV Market, and WV Cottage is sitting in my dining room waiting for me to build. I was going to spend the weekend doing it but we booked a last minute weekender to Cuba for a few days instead. If I uncover any poorly constructed socialist LEGO rip-offs I'll be sure to post them.

Perhaps...but since I don't do MOC (Would like to), it still wouldn't entice me!

Well maybe just a little...

My WV collection has grown (around 5000pcs now) to the point where I'm planning on not taking them apart this year, and just putting them in storage.

Still need to finish the Post Office, and start on the Cottage and Market this year... time is running out!

Goblin King set keeps dropping, all the way to 50% off, and yet I still can never hit the buy button on that set.

This is also the first time I've put together a set with a light brick. Really ties the set together.

I'm with you-I will not be disassembling my WV sets. I had an idea that I'd build them all each year but there's no way that's happening. I've been trying to find time to assemble the cottage for weeks now.

I hope you like the Post Office. I think it is the most attractive of the first three sets for sure-it displays so well. I continue to be disappointed in the bakery, aside from the light and the rink.

The light brick works really well in the toy shop and the bakery-I can't wait to build the cottage and spend some time with it.

so amazon really came through and apparently they had someone from USPS deliver the package to my mailbox late at night tonight 0_0 crazy to think that Amazon has power over shipments to that level!

Glad to have it.

Also, my barrel escape comes in tomorrow which is crazy! I ordered it like a day ago from TRU with standard shipping and it comes in tomorrow >_<

Cobbling together my top 5 list now. Already have the order decided, just trying to type up reasons for each. Also going to post some honorable mentions in no particular order.

My personal top 5 sets of the year.
This is just what I bought and built that was released this year. There are still sets that I want (hello, Sydney Opera House!), but of 40 sets released in 2013 that I bought, these were my favorites.

1. Ewok Village
Big. Bold. Beautiful.
I know playsets are not everyone’s cup of tea, but I am a sucker for a well made one. This set comes with tons of great parts for future MOCs (if I ever do take it apart permanently that is), and tons of neat techniques to use later (some I already stole shamelessly). Each tree trunk was just different enough to keep you on your toes, but also similar enough that it didn’t throw you off.
So many interactive features throughout, the set is just brimming with charm and character that has to be built to really appreciate. Not to mention that it comes with a whopping 17 mini figures. The Star Wars line saved the best for last this year.
So much going on in the set. My full 50 pic review of the set, and that really does not do it justice. Finally, a set that gives the Best Star a run for its money for just being fun and makes you feel like a kid again.

2. Hive Crawler
Speaking of feeling like a kid again, that is how I felt both times I built this set this year. A lot of great pieces in it, and some unique technique as it goes together. I was giggling as I finished this and started running it around the floor of my apartment and terrorizing my cats with the moving legs and egg sac launching action. There really isn’t a set that I have built to compare this to. Just a helluva lot of fun from start to finish. Especially at the finish.

3. Silver Mine Shootout
Another unique build, but a terrific playset. The build is a bit chaotic, but that is what makes it so fun. Very little symmetry in it as it is mainly just ragged rock formations. But the real glory of the set is along the back side of it with all the play features. The sheer volume of interactive play features crammed into a set with a footprint this small is astounding, and so much fun to pose figures on and play with.

4. Red Five X-Wing Starfighter
Another big and beautiful Star Wars UCS set, so no surprise it was great. The gear structure inside the main body is great, and the fact that there are no rubber bands to make the wings work is even better. The wings get a bit repetitious at the end, and the stickers on the wind screen are terror inducing because of how precise you have to be, but the end results speak for themselves. An iconic ship from the series, given the proper glory once again from LEGO.

5. Bug Obliterator
Yeah, another Galaxy Squad set. This was the first in the line that I bought, and it was mostly downhill from here until Hive Crawler. So much SNOT in here, and so many neat little techniques. What sets this apart from the rest of the great Galaxy Squad line is that both vehicles feel like complete sets you could buy on their own. They just happen to combine into one awesome vehicle when done.
The bug in it is also a fun build, and just adds further charm to a fantastic set.

Honorable Mentions
Some other sets that were a ton of fun to build and play with, but in no particular order.

Favorite Theme of the Year

70700_alt1.jpg

Well, duh. Galaxy Squad.
A nice return of a space theme, but with tons of character in almost every single set. It may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but it brought a flood of nostalgia for me and my love of the classic Space System sets. It just had a modern twist to it.

Favorite Mini Figure of the Year
sh052.jpg

Doctor Doom. Currently only in Spider-Man: Daily Bugle Showdown.
The set itself was ok, but the mini figs in it are really tough to top. Especially ole Victor Von Doom here. I am biased a bit in this, because I LOVE Doctor Doom, so I was obviously enthusiastic to finally get him in LEGO form.

Nice list Phonciple!

Going to have to do mine up soonish, but I think we'll be seeing some similarities...

With the mutual love of Galaxy Squad and Silver Mine Shootout, I expect it.
After all, it was your raving about Silver Mine that got me to bite. And I am VERY glad I did.

Very nice Phonce, I seriously doubt I bought enough 2013 sets to even make a list of 5 :(
And with the new flat, new kitchen et al I am utterly broke atm... But at least I have a new flat and a new kitchen. ;)

Also wanted to get my list up well enough before Christmas. Conveniently, many of the sets I loved are on sale quite frequently lately for steep discounts.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown PhoncipleBone. Some really fantastic sets and I only have a handfull of those :) Would love, love to have arkham or ewok village.

More 2014 video reviews rolling in... Brick Show getting their hands on some 2014 Batman sets, hopefully with more reviews to follow shortly

Another $20 Super Hero set. Those all have been good values even if you got them for the minifigs mostly.

That Hive Crawler is ridiculously awesome. It's one of the sets that is so easy to talk with customers about and help them get excited for it. Such a surprise for me too because I really just liked Galaxy Squad for the vehicles and the squad dudes, and never cared much for the insectoid stuff. But that set is ridiculously fun and blows me away.

SSD could be OOP soon. Or it may go out in a blaze of glory for "May the Fourth".

May the 4th is when the thermal exhaust port will be discovered on the Best Star

The LotR 2012 sets are now OOP.

Local BN still has almost all of them in stock here. Tons of Helm's Deep and Mines of Moria.

Speaking of which, I have a 20% off coupon for BN if anyone wants it. Just PM me with your email address and I shall forward it to you. Works this weekend only.

I wouldn't count on that... Best Star will never die... or will it? LOL

Now would be the time to pick these up if you haven't, because I could see both of them increasing in value quickly on the resale market. Whether that happens before the LotR theme is done or not, I don't know.

I am at work but is it on Cuusoouooouo?

I forgot to post the blurb!

The Arvo Brothers have created a perfect Lego model of the most famous bike in sci-fi comic and cinema history: Kaneda's chopper from Akira. And while Lego may not make it into a commercial set, don't worry, the Arvo Brothers are publishing an online manual so you can build it yourself.

So it looks like these guys are providing instructions of some sort. Not sure if they will be free or not though. They way it's worded makes me think they will be charging for the instructions. But this thing needs the appropriate stickers as well!
