LEGO |OT5| DARKNESS! NO MONEY! (or Break the Rules! Mix the Bags!)

Status
Not open for further replies.
The buyer hasn't paid for it. The seller is going away for a week on business and will finalise the sale when he returns. I could have concluded the transaction before he went away. The set was listed only for 3 hours before I made my first offer. The seller's latest response was "I have other similar sets that I will put on sale soon." Ugh.

So now it is time to stop and realize that you cannot have everything in life. Or better, thay you cannot force other people to think like you, no matter how right you think you are. Sorry (really).

Snagged a Sandcrawler that popped up on Amazon Warehouse Deals for $190. I've been holding out on it for a while and just missed the ToysRUs deal on it a few weeks back. Assuming it was a return and hopefully just a damaged box and not missing a bag or 2. We shall see!

but ultimately those people are making stuff (and money) from a Lego patent. (Keep in mind that I am not talking about MOCs that are made from fans, homages and such, that are not sold).
I don't disagree with what you're saying, but I'm curious about which patents you refer to... Most Lego's patent have (long) expired (they tried and failed to replace it with trademarks) and some of then weren't even valid, since there were companies building bricks really similar with Lego's before Lego started its business...

I hate what Lepin is doing because they're blatently stealing models. If they would simply offer their own, like Megablocks (assuming they don't steal the molds, nor steal IPs), they could be fine.

Not that I would buy Megablocks myself, but I don't have a problem seeing them in shops, that's fair...

Aaaaannnnd... in some cases the custom stuff is also based on an existing IP. Changing the name (like Game of Thrones -> Dragon Sword Fighter Force) is only a cover, people buy those stuff because of the original IP.
Well, it depends... Changing the name may suffice to make the thing perfectly legal, in some cases...

Yes, Copyright at the moment is protected until 70 or 75 years after the death of the author (depending on where you're based) and in the UK and US, it's usually managed by companies (as authors often sell their rights for a hefty fee when creating a work. It's different where I'm from, my copyright is inalienable in mainland Europe. I can only sell, among other things, the right to adapt, to produce, etc). If you don't agree with this. Fine. You don't have to. At the moment it is the way it is. Laws change, and it is not because a law from 300 years ago sais copyright is protected 28 years after publication date, that has to still be the case today. If laws aren't allowed to change, I don't want to know what punishments we would still deal out to thiefs.
Well, I will stick to the law, but people writing the law should weight the interest of companies, of individuals, etc. I think, though, that currently, the balance is tilting strongly toward the largest companies, through aggressive lobbying from them.

I'm not talking about the video (I can't see it right now), but there's some changes of the low that should, I think, be discussed. Especially when DRM and digital content will play a huge role in the near future.

I put all my Christmas LEGO sets under my tree this year. The new train fits under my tree perfectly!

Just built the Tie Striker. Now I just have to get the Hovertank (it's allready ordered) to get my Rogue One collection complete.

It's my least favourite set of the 4 RO sets I built. It looks great and imposing, but the built is pretty boring and repetitve (especially the wings), as Tie's tent to be. The minifig collection offers nothing special neither, though it is cool to have a ground force crewmember. The folding Wings-mechanism is great though, and I actually had to look closer to figure out how the manage to lock them in their position.

For now I would say: AT-ST > Krennics Shuttle (which looks exactly like the movie prop, I recognized so much stuff watching Rogue One) > U-Wing > Tie Striker, with Krennics just a tad above the U-Wing.

Can't wait for the Y-Wing, and might actually get that Scarrif playset too if it isn't too expensive

Well, I will stick to the law, but people writing the law should weight the interest of companies, of individuals, etc. I think, though, that currently, the balance is tilting strongly toward the largest companies, through aggressive lobbying from them.

Sure, as I said, you can disagree with the laws as they are. I just took 'offence' with the claim that Disney steals public domain works, which is a blatent lie.

Also, a law that works for big companies, also protects smaller artists. It's easy to focus on Disney who has billions and forget smaller players. We can go into details or imaginary examples (like: imagine it as still 28, and there was a writer who wrote one moderate succes story. You can imagine him being dependent on the royalties to keep writing stuff.) It's also easy to point at the billions Disney makes, but with every movie they make they still take a financial risk (even though the succes of Star Wars is a given offcourse). Those big bucks allow them to do that.

I am a screenwriter myself (though in the much smaller Flemisch-Belgian market) and my copyright royalties are a godsend in times when I am developing new stuff. It enables me to pay my rent while I am working on something that hasn't been bought yet (and maybe never will). But European copyright is in my opinion better balanced to the benefit the creators themselves.

But, we're derailing here. Let's all agree Lepin should be avoided like the plague for many reasons, including stealing copyrighted stuff, but also probably having criminal ties and terrible work conditions.

Too bad i already picked up the bridge for $78 or so a while back. Even then it was a good price.

I'd like to have two but bad timing... too many expenses right now

can someone convince me to buy the ewok village?!
does it look nice just on display?
i usually never buy playsets but i just can't get this one out of my head.

If Lepin just stuck to their own designs, I honestly would think that would be okay. It's kinda cool they're bringing back old pieces not used anymore like OG Bionicle stuff. But personally I will always stick with Lego cause I can only fit so many sets on my shelf and I think that legos designs are superior and am willing to pay the premium for it. Expecially since like others said there's probably shady stuff going on to get the price that low like stolen molds. And I don't want to support a company that's stolen other people's designs in the past.

I know this is the physical tangible LEGO thread, but any thoughts on whether TT Games will do a LEGO Rogue One game or not?

Rogue one will probably be DLC for lego the force awakens

Anyways got a Lego Winter village bakery sealed for sale : 290 US Dollars plus shipping

Anyone interested??

When people sell stuff here, it's usually to help other members out or to make a trade.

Hocking your stuff for well over $100 more than the current "new" Bricklink prices here isn't really appropriate.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but I'm curious about which patents you refer to... Most Lego's patent have (long) expired (they tried and failed to replace it with trademarks) and some of then weren't even valid, since there were companies building bricks really similar with Lego's before Lego started its business...

I believe they still have a patent/trademark/whatever on minifigs, which is why MegaBloks have those ugly figures.

You're killing me with this.

I've bought so many Lego sets this year.

I resisted the Spider-Man bridge for $58.

My wallet is taking heavy fire.

what a terrible time for a really good sale... a lot of the really good stuff is already sold out due to christmas demand... bummer

I hope so - my son and I had a blast co-op'ing the Force Awakens game.

Me too, man. I've been playing with my 3 and 1/2 year old girl and she loves it. She gets so excited when we earn a gold brick and she gets to pick it up as player two. She won't play as anyone but Darth Vader and BB-8, so she was thrilled when we built the Vader Tie Advance/A-Wing set that came with a Vader minifig.

Being able to share all this stuff with kids is great.

i usually never buy playsets but i just can't get this one out of my head.

If you are a big fan of the original trilogy, then that is a must get set. I can't imagine LEGO making another one at that scale with all those Ewok minifigs for a long, long time. If Star Wars franchise keeps expanding to new movies I would imagine OT sets to be less common.

I would bet that set will hold it's value very well and has a lot of potential to go up a lot in price.

Just saw Rogue One this morning and I have to say: Lego did it again... Some of the ships / vehicles get so little screentime. Slight spoilers for Rogue One ahead (if you do not mind knowing which ships have a significant role, read ahead).

U-Wing and the Shuttle get a lot of screen time. They seem accurate enough, which couldn't be said for Kylo's shuttle last year. Another main ship (which looks very basic) is nowhere to be found, but will probably be like the Resistance Transport and come in a second or third wave.

The Tie Strikers looks better in Lego form than in the movie and gets very little screentime (less than the regular Tie Fighter). I bought this and the U-Wing already. In hindsight I could have skipped the Striker, but on the other hand it will likely not get a remake. Also comes with really generic figures, which is understandable.

The hovertank is in a scene, but looks more like a transport than a tank.

The AT-ST is the clear loser of this wave for me. Was so high on my list to buy, but dropped a lot. It is in the movie, but do not blink twice, because you could miss it.

The AT-AT is featured way more in this movie. Maybe a remake coming in wave 2 or 3? Would serve Rogue and the UCS Hoth base.

AT-ST is offcourse an OT vehicle, so it doesn't matter if it's featured or not. Also, I guess Lego can't wait untill the movie is image locked to produce sets. Tie Striker, might've had a bigger role once

Before you start judging people, you may want to ask yourself why he still hasn't taken down the ad.

I am not judging you. Sorry if that was the impression. I was just trying to say that no matter how right you think you are you may not be able to convience the other guy. Letting it go may be the best for your mental health. To be fair, I would be pissed too.

A two fig polybag!! Holy Batmans Batman! Hopefully its a Lego Store giveaway, I don't have much luck getting TRU ones. I'm smelling a Feb release month promo, I may hold off on the Scuttler till Feb or maybe break down and get Arkham Asylum whenever it goes up.

Great polybag, or greatest polybag?

Also, does everyone want this thread to run up to 20k (gonna take a bit since it is slower than the last OT), or just get it closed early and make it more of an annual thread? LEGO 2017, etc.

i feel like lego is a pretty continuous hobby at this point. between leaks, speculation, prerelease images, street-date breaking etc there's not really even the product schedule to divide years by. then there's those of us that just kind of buy things eventually when an opportunity arises, or those who design and build when the chance arises. Just let the thread run til it's full and keep posting ads for the headliners in the OT to alert new blood that we're over here.

Any news on how to obtain it once it's out? Prime suspects, TRU promo, LEGO store promo, Target.

Meh on Clown Batman, but I welcome the red cowl for Devilish Batman or something. Green cape for Leprachaun Batman. Is there a green cowl yet? Would be good for Green Lantern Batman and Leprachaun Batman.
Mr. Gold Disco Batman is good. Lots of parts in new colors too.

Worth getting a second Spider-Man: Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge to build into one bridge? Does that work together?

If you can get the set at a really good price and you don't have to sacrifice eating to get it. I have not built it, but I'm sold on it based on minifigs, the look, and reviews here and on LEGO blogs. I just order my 2nd one last night at a very cheap price.

It's still $58.99 on Amazon if you're in the U.S.!!!

I'm shocked it's not out of stock.

EDIT: I'm still waiting for someone to make the bridge with 4+ sets so it has 2 lanes and is complete!

EDIT 2: Checked sale four hours later and it is now sold out. 3rd party sellers now.
