Leslie Benzies (GTA Big Wig) sues TT for $150M in unpaid royalties, ousted by Housers

Benzies was a big part of GTA and it was weird that he left when it was announced. What's even weirder that this lawsuit took this long. If you haven't resigned, wouldn't you make a big fuss about immediately? Why wait for so long?

They were trying to resolve the issue amicably.

That "My key didn't work " thing didn't make any sense though. Even if you are taking a break after a big game launches, if you are the head of the company I'm sure you have some contact with them during your break. No way somebody changed the locks on him while he was away. That sounds way too ridiculous to be true.

That's covered in The Benz's law suit.

Just to add to this, Rockstar Games have updated their job listings and Rockstar North seems to be wanting an entire new team: http://www.rockstargames.com/careers/openings/rockstar-north

rdit: NOTE, Rockstar San Diego (Red Dead series) and Rockstar Toronto (PC ports) have also posted listing for a massive studio reshuffle.

Wow.

Personally, I'm gonna hold judgement until the actual truth goes out. When lawyers get in the mix, it is always the accusing side who looks better... at first at least.

It's just a keyfob system at R* North so all they did was deactivate his keyfob and none of the security doors would open.

just read the lawsuit - wow. The Houser's come across as complete pricks reading that.

Side note - they had a weird relationship with Benzies - some of the lovie dovie emails to each other about how they are friends and partners. Seemed really close - so it's odd to see how they then treated him.

I presume they were emailing Benzies private email account for him to still have the emails...

Wow lol.

This is a real shame that Benzies' tenure had to end like this. Especially if it's true that he wanted to return to working at R* after his time off. He's seemingly been right there with the Houser brothers since GTA III in building R* into the powerhouse it is today.

To be fair from the lawsuit it looks like Benzies and a few colleagues were the real driving force behind GTA 3 - the ones who really tuned it up from GTA 1/2. Certainly from a technical perspective. More so than the Housers.

Could just be them ramping up game development once the core ideas are set out. If not, would be nice to have another top game studio from an exodus.

Not really - it's a big company. That's about the usual number of advertised positions, there are always roles that need filling.

Take Ubisoft for example - they have 36 pages of job openings at the monent. That's about 700 jobs!

Yeah, is it even related to Benzies?

I'm sure Ubisoft is much bigger than T2/R*

I agree, but R* only has ~150 open positions, so the ratio of employees to vacancies is comparable.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with this thread. Are people really thinking that there was suddenly a mass exodus because the boss quit (almost a year ago!)?

I'm involved in the San Diego chapter of the IGDA and I help direct folks to different job opportunities in the area. In addition to talking to the studios directly, I follow their jobs boards pretty closely. The number of job openings at Rockstar San Diego right now is pretty normal.

Doesn't look like a reshuffle to me. Lots of junior & short-term positions. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds, hopefully Benzies gets what he's owed. The complaint Benzies's team file wasd pretty explosive but that's only one side of it, obviously.

Heh just had a look at this.
Seems like Benzie is owed big time and I've read the Houser bros can be crazy business guys.

Also read R* is an absolute hell hole to work in, with upper management changing demands left rift and centre all during production to an absurdly demanding degree. Massive grain of salt, I read the last bit all on glass door.

Any ways interested to see where this is all headed!

Trust me on this, that amount of positions for Rockstar North is crazy unusual, there's a large amount of long time time who have quit the studio over the last year, if related to the Benzies incident or not, it's highly curious how plenty of long time veterans who have worked on either all GTA titles or even ALL Rockstar titles have decided to leave. There's also been a key amount of people leaving San Diego and most recently the artwork and brand designers at Rockstar NYC have also left, including the person who designs the covers for Rockstar Games.

Whether people want to admit it or not, 2014/5 has seen Rockstar Games lose a crazy amount of people and there's PLENTY of projects that were shelved that haven't been picked up yet (titles such as Bully II, aGENT, unsure of the status of Project Remorse though).

As a person who was linked with the web team for Rockstar Games from 2007 to 2015, all I can say is that the stories you hear about the how these places are ran and the weird choices made are often true, the split engine design for Red Dead Redemption with no documentation and rushed patching being one of them which makes porting that title a complete nightmare.

It's not just Leslie Benzies who's gone, but people such as Adam Fowler, Craig Conner, etc, as well, who each had a part in making Rockstar Games titles feel a certain way. It makes me curious about their direction and the next couple of games they get around to as this is really a point where Rockstar Games has gone through a massive shuffle for the first time really since 2000.

When finally, after 6 years of waiting, something emerges from a new red dead game that seems legit, this happens and sucks all of the admiration and hype that i had for rockstar.

=(
