LGBT gets a new flag - reinventing the visible light spectrum

The rainbow flag is figurative, not literal. It represents the metaphor that we appreciate a rainbow as beautiful because of all of its diverse colours, and thus if we appreciate and embrace the diversity of humanity the same way, then we are far more beautiful. It already represents every one of us.

This change makes the flag literal and destroys this metaphor. Suddenly the colours are meant to represent skin colour? It becomes exclusionary and divisive. I think it is the wrong way to tackle issues of racism within LGBT communities. It's the practice of not living up to the symbol that needs to be changed, not the symbol itself. Besides all of this, it looks terrible.

We can have a flag that talks about race, you know. That's a thing we can do. That's a thing a black queer woman can very well do. That's a thing we probably should do, considering the circumstances.

We can also have that flag not specifically include white people. That's also a thing we can do. And you can always mention why exactly that's concerning to you.

Lets just do everything

Honestly that would actually be a pretty good one. Something about that shade of brown in the OP just doesn't mix with the colors next to it. Maybe if they switched it to somewhere else on the flag it wouldn't look quite a off...

So by implication anyone flying the old version of the flag is now marked as a racist?
I'm sure that'll help strengthen relations within the LGBT community. Yup, nothing can go wrong there.

Yes. This is correct.

This is exactly correct.

FAKE EDIT: Jesus...

I have had severe health issues for the past two months. This thread is doing a better job killing me than any of them.

If the new flag catches on and we don't have stories about people flying the 'wrong' flag I'll be genuinely amazed.

Nothing to do with race or LGBT issues. People just get crazy over flags.

I've actually been seeing some of my friends sharing a different variation of this online recently.

This is SOOOOOO much better. It includes a much wider range of ethnicities, and ties in really well with the theme of unity under the rainbow. It actually meshes really well with the original flag's themes.

See, a flag in support of diversity in the LGBT community is a good idea, but we shouldn't be so desperate for one that we accept the first one that pops up, especially when its as lazy and poorly thought out as the one in the OP.

So Philly Pride came and went without a hitch this weekend

People rocked the normal pride flag.

People rocked the POC pride flag.

Saw a few people with the leather pride flag.

TONS of people rocked the bisexual pride flag.

And it was a day full of love and acceptance and nobody gave a fuck about this controversy.

Personally, I think this flag looks like tacky clip art and/or middle school sports team logo.
