Did he look stupid before? Edit : I mean, maybe the designer just realized how awful his main character looked, and decided to change his look? JRPGs certainly haven't been free of skimpily dressed male protagonists before.

The women look like they are wearing sexualized pop star costumes. The original outfit looked like he just stole one of those. Like a strange jumpsuit swimsuit designed for Jennifer Lopez or something. That's not how I picture flatteringly sexualized men's outfits. I'd rather they cover him up than use a bad skimpy design.
