Addressing this sentiment, the jump to 3D in itself was not that big of a deal and not new at the time. A bunch of games has done it before, but Nintendo managed to invent control schemes that are basically still in use today. On top of that the games were took advantage of this new world by opening up exploration never seen before.
Such a huge revolution is hard to do again, but there have been big changes after 1996. Most prominent is probably online multiplayer which can either be split screen at a distance or a completely different game and it's far from thought out. The extra power means worlds can be bigger and have given us Minecraft which has a world way larger than our own planet.
Nintendo hasn't really taken advantage of either of those. They've used the bump in power to boost graphics and storage to get more characters and multiplayer to make split screen at a distance, but not to create something fundamentally impossible on the N64. Not that they're the only one, but that's a different discussion so, bonne nuit
