PopGAF is amazing

I love the drama there and the witty responses followed by gifs.

when you're trying to be lowkey on grindr but a friend at work stopped me and said his friend saw my picture on of of those dating sites/app.

i guess he described the pic to him but i was like oh shit it might be the undies pic lol. but he said i was wearing a wife beater shirt, and 40lbs heavier with my gut hanging out (y). i'm like oh. my fat pic lol.

he was like it was a terrible pic. he said did i even get any replies. and i'm like yeah i did lol. he was surprised.

Wow at the last part... Did he really say that? Is that friend/coworker even straight?? I can't see a straight dude acting all like "your grinder pic is terrible, did you even get any replies?" if anything, he sounds like a jealous beech... lol

And yes, you do get a lot of replies, so tell him!

it was the "before" pic when i was like 30-40 pounds heavier. hes probably thinking why would i even post that picture. he wasn't trying to say grindr btw but he knows it must be a gay dating/app since his friend is gay.

EDIT: i didn't have a shirt on lol. but it is a fat picture though.

but he's cool though. i had to back up his pictures and told me i'll come across his dick pic and other stuff and say don't mind them. (y)

Yeah, I don't feel like I'm skilled enough to contribute to the conversations, but ever since I recently discovered popgaf I've enjoyed lurking for the entertainment value. lol

The pronouns struggle is real

Being referred to as male somewhat annoys me but it feels like there's nothing I can really do about it

Being referred to as female makes me feel nice and I enjoy it, but I can't help but feel it's wrong I guess due to being biologically male :/

they/them just makes me feel like I'm not even a person ugh

Other people should just refer to you by whichever pronoun you wish. I never understood the issue here. People can associate with whichever gender they are most comfortable with. It's not up to other people, and it's a basic sign of decency to respect it.

Also, the "they" thing is not only totally disrespectful -- it's grammatically incorrect as well. Ugh.

But don't let other people's ignorance or rudeness get to you, Emouse. Be who you want to be, and be proud of it. If anything, the people who don't show you the respect you deserve are letting you know they're not worth your time. <3

Trying to convince my bi friend to go to a gay bar with me isn't working well at all lol

Have you seen the last 3 pages in the thread? Top qualiTEA entertainment value ever. A messy tea tbh. Our faves wish

This happened to me as well with some str8 friends. They love you being their gay friend but ask them to go to a gay bar and it's like "why would I go there".

And they always expect you to go to str8 clubs with them, even though it's useless for a fellow gay man. Mess.

It was a glorious train wreck. I've only been on gaf a few months but that might've been the best laugh I've had since joining. XD

they/them is not grammatically incorrect bye

It absolutely is, when you're referring to a single person.

Yep. Stick it in your ear, DA. You're allowed to start sentences with prepositions too.

Of course you are; they're prepositions. It's ending a sentence with them that some take issue with. Even then, that's just a mixup caused by it not fitting within Latin syntax. English is different and allows for ending your sentences with them.

I guess I'm confused because I feel pretty sure a person can be called they/them

"Who was that person on the phone? They told me I could get a refund. I wanted to write a letter to thank them for helping me."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they

Literally 700 years in use. It absolutely is established, and subjective elsewise.

Yeah, I read an article not long ago about how contentious pronouns are, at which point I looked into "they." (Fake edit: Found the article.) I was really surprised to learn that it was only deemed troublesome to use in recent years and had been used long before some people tried to erase it. Personally, I've used it since I was a young child. When saying "Someone left ____ umbrella," I'm going to say "their" rather than "his or her." If a famous and respected Victorian author used it, then I'll say so can I.

It's not absolutely established. If you read beyond the introductory paragraph, you see that it is indeed in debate among many groups. Yes, it's been used colloquially for a long time. I'm aware of that. But that doesn't mean it does properly within the syntax.

In fact, most style guides (as referenced in the very article you linked) recommend restructuring a sentence to avoid the singular they issue altogether.

That being said, I'm not opposed to using it in everyday speech if you're legitimately unsure of someone's gender. It can be a simple shorthand and is certainly more respectful than the abhorrent "it." But what I was trying to get at was that I don't want it to be used because someone refuses to call someone by their identified gender.

I'm trying to be nice and encouraging, so I'm not sure why I'm getting pushed back against for a small side comment.

The pushback (at least on my part) is because many non-binary or questioning people choose and ask people to call them they/them/their so to say it is definitively incorrect and "ugh" seems like it is discounting a popular choice (even if you weren't doing so out of disrespect for someone's ability to express their gender on their own terms). I get that your real issue was with those terms being chosen for someone without their input, but you also dissed the pronouns for the many who are comforted by them. It suggests there an inherent mistake in those terms that thousands identify with.

They/them/their is a legitimate choice as far as most in the community are concerned, to my knowledge

if they have any links to their social media apps then they aren't there to talk.

Maybe because they get a lot of attention, so they have no need to be entertaining with everyone that chats with them.

I get what both of you had said but I just get the same chat up line from girls on it time after time. "You can train me anytime" or words like it, just because I am into the gym. Then comments about how they like my skin colour. The guys I have matched just seem far more able to talk about other things then that.

I thought guys were sex mad until I got on Tinder....

Ha, that thread made me laugh.

No it isn't. Descriptivists and Standard American English grammar school books don't determine English grammar.

I wish people who "love" language would actually bother to study linguistics.

Is it like a legit breakup and the post is a snarky revenge post or...?

EDIT: actually let me mind my own business if this is as petty as I suspect

Aren't they the couple that were fucking each other at work because DA is privileged enough to be employed by his own father?

Or is that not what that letter is?

I thought it was another user who was seeing an older guy not affiliated with GAF in any way.

Smh.

What's everyone's plans for the holidays? mine is going to be very chill.

I work on Christmas Eve for a few hours but thankfully the business won't be open too late so I won't miss any holiday stuff :) (My dad's side of the family celebrates christmas eve, and the other half celebrates on christmas day!)

You know what... I love HDR, I can never go back to regular television and games without HDR!

I was skeptical at first, but it truly is something that makes viewing (and gaming experience) better, that will only get better in the coming months.

If anyone is skeptical, don't be! Go to to your regular best buy or electronics store and try to see if they have an HDR tv with some demos on it and see for yourself!

That's nice, I hope you have a good time drink the good stuff for me. (i'm a lightweight)

I shall be doing what I always do at Christmas. Stop going to gym and eating too and all unhealthy stuff. Plus putting up with my mum asking why I haven't asked out my friend yet. Even though I have said on many occasions my friend is a lesbian.
