There's a looooot of that Grindr nonsense in Austin. My favorite one recently was "white guy looking for same. No black or latino, or even black or latino mix"

Okay Draco

EDIT: Whoops new page. Here's some hotness (possibly NSFW):

Ugh my heart is racing really fast because two of my roommates who are always hooking up with girls and trying to get them drunk just brought one over and played some drinking games with her.

but then one of them went down the hall near my room and I heard the other guy and the girl laughing at first back out in the living room. but then she started saying stop and i couldn't tell if it was drinking game stop or not, so I got up and listened at my door and she said it like 5 more times without the guy saying anything and if I could hear her, the other two guys did obviously.

so i'm a bit anxious in social settings and am always basically hiding in my room when people are over. so I was thinking about an excuse to go out there to make sure that this was a drinking game thing hopefully she was just annoyed by, so I grabbed something I could pretend to just need to microwave out in that area.

but I heard her say she was leaving before i found something to use for the excuse. so the one causing problems came down the hall and said all he did was kiss her and she left (but she obviously had to stop him a ton of times if that's what she was saying stop to).

So then the guy who was down in his room said he heard it and if a girl says stop you just drop it because she's not into it. but the other starts making excuses like saying she was here late and flirting. they keep going on and on between bro talk about her and how she could've wanted it vs. the one who wasn't in the room saying he probably should have came in there to say something because now he feels bad that my other roommate wasn't stopping.

And now they just said she is 18 (these guys are 22) and that they spiked her drink (I don't know what they put in it but they were calling her stupid for not knowing).

I already thought they were awful guys because the seemingly wiser one in this situation locked out a girl he had over, standing exposed in our hallway with just her bra after they had sex and she didn't know he would lock her out. At the time I heard her knocking on his door, I assumed maybe he fell asleep but I didn't see her or meet her yet, so when she knocked on my door I was kind of shocked and I asked if she needed to use my phone or something.

She went to a different room to use it and while I was waiting in my doorway, the guy opens his door a little and says 'thanks man' as if I wanted a girl to be left without her stuff in the middle of the night, exposed without even all her underwear, among a bunch of men she doesn't know and she wouldn't know I'm gay. Like I would help him try and ditch his hookup in such a shitty way.

They just have a history of talking shit about girls and scheming to get them drunk and ways to cheat in class.

So now what?
Spiking drinks is the gateway to rape country. You need to report this. Seriously.

Wow.. we have the discussion about queer representation in popular media, and then the Billy Crystal thing pop-up? Impressive timing!

Perhaps we need to have a talk about buying a lottery ticket together.

Actually exploring those issues is absolutely something worth doing, but the problem I have isn't with LGBT creators addressing what have become 'standard' queer issues in media, but creators from majority populations using that same set of plots and archetypes to throw in cheap drama, provide ham-handed characterisation and generally avoid any plotline for a gender/sexual minority that isn't completely built on the back of their often-tragic deviations from the norm; as if it'd be pointless to even bother writing a LGBT character otherwise. I don't see how getting to the point where people don't feel the need to 'justify' the existence of non-straight, non-cis individuals in genre fiction and mass-market narratives wouldn't be beneficial to the state of representation in general.

I'm not sure that you took away the intended message from my post (or maybe it is me who are interpreting your post wrong), but I didn't talk about how there must be exploration of those issues when dealing with LGBTIQA characters. If anything I agree with you about the perceived need for justification of non-cis, non-white characters (I would also like to throw in non-white and non-male as well). I was just not agreeing with VegiHam's view of LGBTIQA media and a bit unsure of it was an argument for better representation in general or an argument for making something that suits his specific wants.

I'm not sure how I should feel about those people. On the one hand I feel pity, on the other hand I am somewhat indifferent. Those are their "preferences" if we could call it that... but they sure are limiting their options and missing out! imo, lol

Late to the "gay" media talk, but since apparently it wasn't mentioned, I'd like to add that I really enjoyed the first two seasons of Please Like Me.
A lot more than Looking actually, if for the only reason that the characters are closer to my own age.

It's true, relatability with gay fictional characters really helps.
And yeah Please Like Me is damn good!

Just saw the Billy Crystal thing...

I mean, I can't tell if he's being bigoted or just really inarticulate. The whole statement is really awkward. WTF does he even mean by "not have be an everyday kinda thing"? I forgot I'm only gay once, in a while. Maybe when a full moon happens. Like a werewolf.

Never even heard of this one. Will check it out.

I don't think I've got the stomach to do anything about it right now, but I know to go out there sooner if they sound suspicious next time. Thanks for reading all that.

And keep posting covers. That's one of my favorite songs. This is the first time I've heard it outside me listening to it since I assumed it wasn't well known. Really nice voice you have.

Yeah anytime. And thanks. :) I was actually thinking about how much exposure that song has. I don't think it was featured in anything, and it didn't get radio play. I can't for the life of me remember how I discovered it. I wanna say it was a niche hit maybe?

Jeebus. That Billy Crystal thread is a mess, I was thinking about posting in it about the what people perceive as "going too far" and how those standards differ when talking about same-sex intimacy versus opposite-sex intimacy. But I'm not sure if I'll bother.

Just want to share this titbit about film ratings though, the following is how Pride (which is rather good in that Brit-quirk à la Billy Elliot/Kinky Boots way) is rated in different countries:
MPAA: R (17) for language and brief sexual content
BBFC: 15 for language, drug use and sexual references (note: the main issue for the BBFC is probably the language)
Sweden: 7

There is a long and depressing history with how MPAA rates films that contain same-sex boning harsher than films with opposite sex boning. Also, they tend to rate films higher if it stars people of colour. The MPAA really fucking sucks.

Well how explicit is the sex?
Just curious.

I know a lot of people hear have seen Panti Bliss's speech earlier last year in The Abbey Theatre commenting on homophobia and oppression, but I'm not sure if this one that was given as a TedX talk in Dublin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIhsv18lrqY.

Admittedly a lot of the same topics are covered, but it seems particularly relevant given a comment Ivysaur made in the thread regarding Modern Family, and what a few others are commenting on with disliking to see 'intimacy' between LGBT individuals so thought I might as well post it given the discussion that's on going if anybody has any interest.

There is no actual sex. The following is the description from the BBFC page, contains "spoilers" (not really spoilers but you know):
Verbal and visual sex references include sight of men in a club wearing 'bondage' clothing, including one with a ball gag in his mouth, and a scene in which women roar with laughter as they find a dildo and some porn magazines in a bedroom. The images in the magazines include strong sexualised nudity, but the images appear only briefly and in a very clearly comic context.

The phrase "but the images appear only briefly and in a very clearly comic context." indicates that it probably would have passed as 12A in the UK if not for their rules about language (which I don't fully approve of but that's another topic entirely).

Will give it a watch, I really admired the original speech.

Is it available on Netflix in Europe? Sounds like it would be right up my alley. :3

Morons are gonna moron. At the very least it's much more convenient for the rest of the population to know exactly who not to mess with just by reading headlines like that. :p

My profile: "No whites, blacks, latinos, asians, gays or men please. Sorry just a preference. Duck-billed platypus looking for same."

You'd sadly be surprised at how many people think I'm serious too. lol

I'm hoping so. But too many naive offspring seem to believe what their ignorant parents tell them, I think.. :( (Pardon my insensitive wording)

I mean, asshats will always be around, but look at the cultural shift that's already happened so far. Progress makes some people uncomfortable. We wouldn't even be having this conversation or that Billy Crystal thread if so much movement to the right direction hadn't already been happening.

It's a sign of good things I say. Growing pains. :)

True.. The general shift, especially in the last couple years, has been pretty good. I'm going to stay optimistic :)

LGBT+ Thread |OT6| Too gay for Billy Crystal

Just sayin'.

I love your avatar. Brilliant show that was.

I used to not remember much of the show other than that I liked it, but last year I rewatched it and was shocked at just how well it held up. Much more clever than it's given credit for.

Well it's certainly not going to get worse, so there's that. It's frustrating because we've come so far already in the past couple of years and we can obviously see the finish line, but we don't wanna have to wait around for everyone else to meet us there. It's frustrating but we also need to have empathy. I know that the gay sex scene in How To Get Away With Murder was a first time display for millions of people, so naturally it's going to be met with some resistance or discomfort among some. It's natural, but the fact that it didn't garner that much noise is a great thing. It shows that most people are totally fine with it, or if they're not, they've taken it upon themselves personally to get used to it instead of piping off publicly and looking like an ass.

I suppose so. x_X

I love your avatar.

Thank you! <3

It's likely that it won't, but it wouldn't be the first time it happens. There have been enough cases of society going backwards for diverse reasons (usually religious, though). Current Russia is a good example, or back when Japan "adopted" western homophobia and started to make nudity less acceptable for the sake of being more "civilized". Or that picture posted recently in the Pakistan thread about a middle east country (can't remember which one :/) which showed how women were actually less oppressed than now some decades ago.

I love it!

I just found that thread.

:/ Sigh.
I'm not even 100% sure why I made it now. I'm so over focusing on negative aspects and being torn down all the time. Why do we always have to defend ourselves? Why is everything used as an excuse for someone to tell me to repress myself? The initial glut of responses didn't help much, and just made me feel all wound up. Bleh.

Maybe I am over sensitive about some stuff, but it's not like I enjoy feeling this way. (And usually I don't get so down about stuff like this, but today it got to me.)

Hey, you've got a Purple Eggplant in your avatar. What kind of lifestyle are you trying to shove in our straight faces, here?!

;__; That thread was really disheartening to read.
