Bloody Hypocrite: Schilling's 38 Studios Fires 413

Former pitcher, Curt Schilling, will be enshrined in the memories of Red Sox fans for his bloody-sock-related wins in 2004. But Rhode Island residents will remember the vocal Republican for costing the state $112.6 million in moral obligation bond payments in the wake of his collapsed video game company.

Schilling has been clear about his rage against big government and the value he places on individual responsibility. One example of this came in February 2011 — just before he moved 38 Studios from Maynard to Providence.

But Schilling’s pitching and political advocacy skills evidently did not extend to competing in business. Otherwise, he would have acted in a way consistent with his anti-big-government, pro-free-market stance and raised venture capital instead of taking a taxpayer loan guarantee.

But he tried to raise private funding and got turned down. And there’s no reason that venture firms should have given him money. After all, he had no experience running a company and video game companies are notoriously bad start-up investments.

This is surprisingly depressing. I think it's seeing what are obviously his kids' DVDs up for sale that really seals it for me.

Also super depressing: The picture for Odds and Ends that includes such items as a random combination lock.

It really looks like they just took his random crap drawer and dumped it out to take a picture.

This is why shows like Shark Tank (and people like Kevin O'Leary) exist. To tell people the cold hard truth before they invest all their money into ruinous project.

So one game made the guy dead broke?

Two.

One was an MMO stuck in development hell, the other was KoA, which didn't sell well.

I think he now owes Rhode Island a bunch of money.

What did Curt do to you?

He took money from the State hand over fist to prop up his lavish life style and pet projects while constantly haranguing about those dirty poors and minorities ruining the economy by asking for 130 bucks a month in food aid.

I don't take any pleasure from him having to sell everything. Ends up he did sink all of his money into the game he believed in.

The entire situation with the game and studio was just a tragic comedy of errors.

:(

Damn, I feel horrible for him. This game was his dream. He was very passionate about gaming, and despite everything they ended up making a pretty cool game.

I'm so sorry it didn't work out.

What did he do?
Haven't followed this KoA fiasco.

He took money from the State hand over fist to prop up his lavish life style and pet projects while constantly haranguing about those dirty poors and minorities ruining the economy by asking for 130 bucks a month in food aid.

I think he got really snappy with someone once who pointed out that discrepancy.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Man, that's sad. Guy made some business mistakes, and this is the harsh result that can come of it... but damn. Dude really believed in the game he was making, and it really cost him.

i can't take joy from a HOF baseball player ruined because he dreamed to started his own videogame studio.

I'd do the same thing if I won the powerball.

As far as athletes throwing away fortunes goes, doing it with a videogame studio is very unique.

Exactly how far in debt did he go? He has been on ESPN nearly every night the whole season.

I don't think that's peoples' problem with him. It was his attitude towards government handouts and then asking for those same handouts.

With a much sharper focus, this could have been a great series. It was basically single player WoW but with much better combat.

So, if there's a lesson we should all take from this, it's if you ever become super-rich and want to fund a game, just make sure it's not an MMO.

This just needs to be quoted again before everyone feels too sorry for the guy.

I expected this to be the studios assets and not his kids DVD's and video games. It's such a shame. The way in which he put so much of his own money into the company and risked his already sound financial future is just mind boggling.

The lesson seems to be that you need investors for something like this and that using your own money is crazy.
