Like THQ but with less junk, Curt Schilling is broke and you can buy all his stuff.

i can't take joy from a HOF baseball player ruined because he dreamed to started his own videogame studio.

I'd do the same thing if I won the powerball.

How about because he was an asshole, and a miserable manipulative human being who alternately lied to employees, or outright was too dumb to do so, and thus said ridiculous crap to them, better left unsaid.

My brief time interacting with that guy will stay with me forever. He made my interactions with Denis Dyack downright fond memories in comparison.

This is actually very sad. I'm bummed his studio didn't work out. KoA was almost a great game.

I saw the vision he had and it was good, unfortunately it didn't pan out in the finished product, i did have a LOT of fun with it before i hit a no fun wall.. someone else in the thread said it best, what a "tragic comedy of errors", he seemed a humble dude in the OT threads, he answered everybodies questions.. I pray he's able to get back on his feet, him and his familia.

at least he put his money where his mouth was, just too bad it didn't work out because Amalur was one of my favorite games last year :(

With a much sharper focus, this could have been a great series. It was basically single player WoW but with much better combat.

It gets too easy as the game progresses, but the gameplay is still really fun. A very vibrant world to explore as well.

You know, I'm actually thinking of buying the expansions. They are supposed to be pretty good.

The 38 Studios and Big Huge Games situation is what was really sad. All of those employees just fucked over without pay at the last minute. They made a pretty fun game that deserved a bit better, and certainly another chance at a sequel.

This is surprisingly depressing. I think it's seeing what are obviously his kids' DVDs up for sale that really seals it for me.

This was the first thing I was going to post when I saw those DVDs. He obviously made some bad business decisions, but the Rhode Island government is blood thirsty over this debacle and are looking to take him for whatever they can. It's scary when I hear the local radio stations just completely vilify the guy, like he personally took all that money. All the evidence points to the fact that he poured his heart and soul into the project, but lacked the project management skills to see it to the end or make the tough calls.

Also their health plan being canceled with like a day or two's notice (and only because an employee's pregnant wife found out after an exam)(Also COBRA isn't an option if the whole plan is cancelled)

Amazes me how fast millionaires can go broke like that. Especially athletes, get these guys financial advisors.
I think part of it is that people who come into a huge sum of money didn't slowly accrue it and know how to properly invest and diversify.

Much like the cases of people with poor financial planning suddenly winning the lottery, and... still having poor financial planning.

You'd hope at least in his case, he'd have an accountant screaming at him every time another million evaporates.

He took money from the State hand over fist to prop up his lavish life style and pet projects while constantly haranguing about those dirty poors and minorities ruining the economy by asking for 130 bucks a month in food aid.

Yep, which is why I cant really feel sorry for the guy.

Was he vocally against people on benefits or something?

Is there any evidence that he use the State's money in his personal life? Because he's obviously sunk all his life savings into 38 Studios, Big Huge Games and both the game projects, and it has as good as bankrupted him.

I don't know anything about the guy personally, but clearly he invested everything he had into the projects. Further, I understand he was offered the money from Rhode Island as an investment and to create jobs? He is not to blame for accepting that money; it's the previous governor's fault for making the investment in the first place.

From what I understand Rhode Island and Massachusetts got into a bidding war over which could lure the studio to their state.

Man, that's sad. Guy made some business mistakes, and this is the harsh result that can come of it... but damn. Dude really believed in the game he was making, and it really cost him.

Well, he was apparently aware of the fact that he had no business or game development experience, so it's a bit puzzling why he didn't buy an independent studio, hire some people, hire someone who knows the business aspect of it to run it, make a few smaller games to get established, and, perhaps, eventually, make a small scale MMO, or something along those lines.

Instead, he went straight for the AAA game development, while also making a huge scale MMO. AAA game development is risky even for experienced, established studios, and doubly-so for MMO's.

Yeah, this really is. I mean damn... guy loved what he did, and he just lost it all chasing a dream.

Two.

One was an MMO stuck in development hell, the other was KoA, which didn't sell well.

I think he now owes Rhode Island a bunch of money.

Yeah, I'm not going to waste any sympathy on this guy. Easy to talk shit about poor people and handouts while you're high on the hog, but once you're on the internet hawking your children's video games to pay collectors those words come back to bite you in the ass.

It would make me sad if Schilling wasn't such an asshole.

No offense but you come off like an ass hole yourself with the way you are parading this thread. Curt helped put together one of the best teams I've ever seen in the industry and while yes, shit went foul, and yes, he was responsible for some of it, to pin this entire thing on him like he was the only player or the only one affected by this entire incident is a gross understatement and pretty ignorant.

The money was also not borrowed from the state. It was borrowed from private investors and the state cosigned the loan, with the interest of bringing 300+ high paying jobs to help jump start RI's economy, and it was working too. There was no money taken from any taxpayers in RI unless the project failed. Thanks to some confusing bullshit that went down that I guarantee you no one in the public eye has correct, things turned to shit and it began the spiral into what it is now.

Also, while we're here: No, RECKONING was never an MMO. Ever. Kingdoms of Amalur/Copernicus (which was the MMO) was on track to being a fun experience, it definitely still had more work to be done but we were also much further along than most people realize, and it was absolutely gorgeous to boot. I really wish we could have shown video that wasn't 5-6 months old.

Anyway, it's just frustrating to see people filled with misinformation act on it in harsh ways, but I guess that's most of the world for ya.

Edit:
Also treated his employees really badly.

No offense, but what are you talking about? This is the furthest thing from the truth.

Thinks he should have been the one to kill Batman's parents.
Unless he's magically lost his MLB pension and is banned from working in baseball, Schilling isn't anywhere close to being out on the street. I certainly don't feel bad for a multimillionaire who funded his childish fantasy on the backs of taxpayers.

As far as athletes throwing away fortunes goes, doing it with a videogame studio is very unique.

Exactly how far in debt did he go? He has been on ESPN nearly every night the whole season.

Yeah, I've seen him there so he at least still has a job and I'd image it must help a little though all of his salary may be going to pay off his debts.

He does have a baseball analyst job at ESPN for their Baseball Tonight program. I would assume that pays decently.

This is terrible, unfortunate, and depressing. All this because of a game and following one's passion.

No wonder so many developers are going to mobile. The risk is just to big to make a hit. Unless you're part of a huge studio and with a big IP, or get really lucky, how can anyone survive in this industry as a console developer?

Sucks man.

KoA was a good game by the way. What Fable should've been.

Yeah, he should be raking in ~$100,000/year in the form of a pension plus health insurance. Not beaucoup bucks, but he shouldn't end up homeless if he moves somewhere affordable. Who knows how this lawsuit with the State will play out though, maybe they'll snatch up a large fraction of his pension after wiping out all of his current net worth.

It's too big of a gamble to help a state's economy in this manner. It wasn't a wise investment. Even you know that.

I would've been fine seeing a much smaller production which made ripples without any of the strings attached.

WTF man, you can't resell World of Warcraft disks.

No offense, but what are you talking about? This is the furthest thing from the truth.

He wasted money of gifts and parties for his employees, even though his company wasn't making money. Then Curt Schilling, at one point, knew the company is screwed. One of them depended on health insurance for his wife, he never warned any of them employees, let at least one of them move his family only to be screwed over moving bills. Sorry, I'm sure he's a fun guy to hang out with, doesn't change that he screwed his employees in the end.

The guy puts everything he has into trying to launch a succesfull game Company and the OP makes out like he is a criminal. State aid or not I think the hate is ridiculous to the extreme.

He's guilty of mismanagement and being pretty inept in business but as far as i can see thats about it.
