Like THQ but with less junk, Curt Schilling is broke and you can buy all his stuff.

Die hard Yankee fan, So he can fuck off.

But on a serious note. He seems to be a real dick. So why do people feel bad?

I guess I just don't get my jollies kicking people while they are down. I don't think it makes it any better or right to do it 'because the guy is an asshole'

Feel bad for the family sure. But when i read about the whole situation and the amount of families he screwed over. Just hard to feel bad for him.

I kinda wonder how much the value of a game is increased if it was once owned by a sports superstar. Are there people in Boston who would pay $100 for Mortal Kombat if it were Schilling's copy of Mortal Kombat?

I have that exact same Ms. Pacman arcade machine in my house. I wonder how much that's worth.

Edit.. interesting. The Ms Pacman isn't for sale. I wonder why.

The guy puts everything he has into trying to launch a succesfull game Company and the OP makes out like he is a criminal. State aid or not I think the hate is ridiculous to the extreme.

He's guilty of mismanagement and being pretty inept in business but as far as i can see thats about it.

I feel bad for his fmaily, but he is a douchebag of significant proportions.

“He really needed Company 101,” Close told them. “For example, the whole concept of vacation was foreign to Curt. He actually said, ‘People get weekends off, right?’”

This actually sounds pretty much in line with my whole experience in QA.
Except for getting the weekends off.

According to the case study, between fiscal years 2007 and 2008, the company spent more than $705,000 on “travel and entertainment,” a sum Scherlis, the former Turbine CEO, calls “wildly high.”

Holy crap, someone forgot to tell him no one was making them PS2 bucks anymore.

TL:DR-- This thread is sad, this story is sad, Curt's kind of a dick.

Only reason I'm sad is because he has a family that had no part of his idiocy, and they're now part of this shit heap.
That's the only sad part. He was a bit of a hypocrite saying the government should not help people while getting a multimillion dollar deal with the government.

Also how he ran that company was suspect.

Feel absolutely awful for his kids. He made mistakes, but damn seeing his kids things for sell makes me feel like crap. Wish he would just get into coaching and pay off his debts that way.

Defrauded the State, bilked the taxpayers for 100 million, trash talked the poor and sick, screwed over his employees, blamed the government for his sour venture...

But the OP is the real asshole.

Bernie Madoff had his defenders too.

Yeah, that stuff about mortgages indicates something much more fundamentally corrupt than "aww shucks guys we were just in over our heads"

Kinda depressing seeing a dude who decided to become an actual player in his hobby/passion end up like this. I'm sure there were dumb business practices at play, but still...a shame.

You can't champion personal responsibility and then expect sympathy when it turns out that you're extremely irresponsible yourself.

I don't see anyone expecting sympathy. It is being freely given, to a man who made a giant fuck up, and is paying a heavy price for it. His family are paying a price for it.

From what I have read, the guy is an asshole. But I can empathise with an asshole who made a mistake and has everything from his house to dvd collection up for sale because of it.

Why? Because I am not an asshole.

He took money from the State hand over fist to prop up his lavish life style and pet projects while constantly haranguing about those dirty poors and minorities ruining the economy by asking for 130 bucks a month in food aid.

This can not be quoted enough!

I can't think of anything other than that when I think of him, and DEFINITELY feel zero sympathy for him, it's just too bad that his family will be dragged along with him, although as many have pointed out it doesn't seem like they will be out on the streets begging for money anytime soon, so enough with the bleeding heart bullshit people.

Want to help bail out a dead beat? Buy some pointlessly expensive stuff for bottom barrel prices? Maybe pick up a few KoA memorabilia? How about some tacky shit only crooks and swindlers would have in their house?
]

OP is a very mad individual.

After reading your post I did not know whether to laugh (at you) or cry (for the world because you exist)

Dude screwed up and cant manage a studio... ok.... not a reason for such hate.

Agreed.

I think he got really snappy with someone once who pointed out that discrepancy.

Oh, so now we judge people based merely off of what they believe and what they do?

He does have a baseball analyst job at ESPN for their Baseball Tonight program. I would assume that pays decently.

Yeah, and if he wanted he would definitely have teams willing to give him a shot as a manager, pitching coach, or front office position, which would be an easy 6-7 figures a year depending on the job.

Schilling is not going to have any shortage of financial options in his life.

Jesus... made 120+ million dollars in his career and blew through it already?

Just read he had about 50 mil after taxes and agent fees. And spent all 50 million on 38 studios. The guy tried to create jobs and start a game company. I actually feel bad for the guy, I understand he didn't tell employees what was going on, but a normal human being would have a hard time looking people in the face telling them the studios shutting down. No one wants to be in that position.

How does someone invest ALL of their money into a videogame with no backup plan? I really thought Curt was smarter than that...

Feel absolutely awful for his kids. He made mistakes, but damn seeing his kids things for sell makes me feel like crap. Wish he would just get into coaching and pay off his debts that way.

Isn't he a pundit on some ESPN baseball commentary show now?

Guy from Massachusetts here. Don't presume we're all idiots because of Schilling.

damn he owns a pitch bat machine? i remember playing the fuck out of that with my dad when i was little winning tons of baseball cards at the arcade

i don't know why people are ripping on OP. dude fucked over the state. i feel bad for his kids but for him personally, he made dumb decisions. could have opened a smaller game studio and made lower budget titles, you can 'live the dream' without robbing the state when your idea fails

He was part of GAF for a short time and was very excited to talk to gamers and get feedback. I loved the game personally.

The game that actually came out wasn't the one Schilling was working on. IIRC they bought Big Huge and their game and re-branded it because their own MMO was constantly getting delayed and they had to put out something to bring in some revenue.

After playing you're ass off for years and earning quite a bit doing it why would you risk it all in video games...ill bet he went against EVERY bit of advice from his accountants on this.

Worst move ever
