Limited Run Games - Putting digital games into your hands

Suddenly got super busy at work and figured I'd missed it by the time I got back to my desk, went to checkout with both and it said they'd sold out, tried again and no longer sold out! Managed to get a copy of both about 15mins after they went live thankfully.

Goddamn, LRG website is an ugly mess: on checkout I had to go back and forward several times because my cart was randomly showing one of the two Shantae as sold-out, but I was eventually able to place my order for both. I sincerely hope.

E: Well, I just got my confirmation email! But please LRG, you should really spend some time improving your check-out backend because it's so unreliable and tiresome right now.

Don't forget that LGR has gotten a lot more coverage, with the documentary and Game Informer article. Not surprising it sold out faster then other PS4 games.

I wonder if this makes them rethink their Skullgirls strategy? I hope it sells the 10k they want, but I almost think if they just made a 10k printrun, it would sell out pretty quickly too. Potential upside of more than 10k preorders vanishes though. Honestly, very surprised by how quickly Shantae sold out in run 1 vs One Way Heroics and Dragon Fantasy a few weeks ago. Pretty awesome! Congrats Limited Run!

This was my first LRG order. I'm currently working nights so I set my alarm clock to wake up after only 3 hours sleep so I could get my order in on this first batch and I must've gotten it in right before they sold out. Glad I don't have to wait for the second batch later today.

That's not the website, they were sold-out.

You got lucky and someone backed out or did not go through the payment process, which is when a copy gets "locked in".

We are 25 games in and I still have a complete collection :D

Well, save for the Soldner and rainbow moon soundtracks, but that's ok :)

Full game collection!

I'm sure that they are well aware that a 10k run would've sold, you aren't the first person to say this and if anyone knows anything about LRG sales it's LRG, i'm sure there's a valid reason for the pre-order strategy.

Same here, except I´m not getting the soundtracks.

Had to juggle between work and checking out this time, was a bit worried I wouldn´t make it but managed to grab both Shantae games.

It's as simple as Lab Zero wanting to make sure that everyone who wants one can get one. They've got a big enough fanbase that I truly believe it won't have trouble reaching the sales goal. Smaller titles would certainly struggle to hit those numbers, but I believe a strong enough game can (and Skullgirls fits that bill). It's worth a shot, but it isn't a model we'll pursue unless the devs request it with the full understanding that it could negatively impact sales by removing urgency.

I think once you all see the mockup for Skullgirls and what you get for the price - most people will be pretty keen on it. It's looking beautiful.

It's not really something that can be fixed because the way it currently works is as follows:

Items can be added to the cart so long as they aren't registering as sold out.

Items get marked as sold and removed from inventory when checkout is completed, but items are reserved for people if they initiate checkout with the games in their cart. This gives them a window of time to complete checkout without having to worry that the games will get sold from under them.

If the user cancels out of checkout, the inventory is freed up and someone else is allowed to check out with that game. Shopify allows customers to add reserved items to the cart so this scenario can play out. If items were removed from inventory when checkout was initiated, we'd have an even worse checkout process.

The only alternative is reserving items for a certain time period when they're added to the cart, but that would be garbage as people would hold games and soundtracks hostage across multiple accounts. It would give people time to waffle on purchases and ultimately make the experience even worse.

There just isn't a better way to do it. In comparison to how many complaints we used to get about checking out - I think things are A LOT smoother now.

Can't wait for Skullgirls and I really hope this will be a model you could adopt more often in the future. While I understand your approach, I'd like to have more chances at getting your games than in these limited timeframes :)

Good to know. Best of luck to them.
This will be the first real test.

Couldn't agree more it all seems to be working very well now. Haven't had any issues with my last few orders. Keep up the Good Work LRG.

What cover is everyone hoping for?

Personally i'm hoping for #2 for riskys and #1 for pirates

What about putting up something like reCAPTCHA when the user starts the checkout process? You could then let him have that copy reserved for some time either until he completes his order, or a timeout occurs? This way you'd (most probably) resolve the multiple (automated?) accounts that clutter the server, and remaining inventory counter would be far more reliable.

I missed the first batch and i had it on my calender with an alarm set, iam such a slowpoke

If i miss the second i will go bananas

Also, you get both sides, you just flip them.

But that's exactly how it works now only without the captcha, and there's nothing that suggests bots are doing something at all.

Is it possible to make it more visible how much stuck is reserved for checkout, vs how much is actually sold out? That seems feasible and would probably help alleviate a little frustration.

The problem I guess would be that it all happens so fast, the info might never be accurate?
I was thinking the same thing.....but now I'm not sure.
Anyone knows? LRG? :)
Pretty sure it is yeah. Only really matters then for collector's who like to leave sealed.

Though it would be (ever so slightly) nice, imo, not to need to take the cover out and reverse. I'm hoping for #2 on RR.

Dragon Fantasy sold out in 5 mins

That only got 3k copies though.

I think people are underestimating the populaity of Shantae. I predict 10 minutes max.

I certainly did underestimate the selling appeal of Shantae. Don't trust my predictions guys :).

Thanks! Quick question before this all begins! If I buy those protective cases at the same time will the company put the soundtracks inside the cases when they get shipped out? Same with the games?

What kind of games are you looking for?

It seems like dallow_bg will be helping me out, thanks anyway, and if you're interested what I'm looking for:

Pacman CE2
Duke Nukem
Geometry Wars 3
Song of the Deep

I might have missed some US exclusives.

To be fair, I overestimated it. It was longer than 10 minutes.

Is Shantaes more popular than the other releases? This is one of the few I couldn't get in time. Hopefully the next batch.

Being part of a, generally, well recieved established series and allowing customers 2 copies probably made it sell out fast.

They are, but people don't want to open their copies.
Yeah I don't know what to do about that either. I love this series and I wanted to play it on a physical disc but now I'm wondering if I should keep it sealed. Don't want it to get damaged.

Same. Although I'm guessing that won't happen for me. If it does though, I'm keeping it sealed.

So a little less than 6 hours from now? I'm in Europe so EST isn't what we use over here. :P

EDIT: Ok, so I counted it right. :3

He meant 6 p.m. EDT. We're still in Daylight Saving Time here in the United States.

To my fellow U.S. GAFfers: You've gotta remember to use the correct abbreviation depending on whether we're in Standard Time or Daylight Saving Time because it can really screw up GAFfers who live on other continents who don't know whether we're in Daylight Saving Time who are trying to use timezone converters to figure out times. (I see this a lot, so it's not just you, LiK.) When someone writes "EST" or "PST" and it's not between roughly early November and mid-March, and a European sees that and runs it through a timezone converter, that European ends up being an hour late.

We're still in EDT/CDT/MDT/PDT until Nov. 6 this year.

They are just double sided covers. Open yours up and flip it for the other one.

I'm aware of that, thus the ' ', but since people want theirs sealed, undoubtedly multiple copies would be purchased (with the limit at 2).

EDIT: Ah I see, it's 6,000 for these ones. Good for PS4!
