Linus goes hands on with Steam Deck

Seems like a relatively useful comparison. A lot of misplaced anger in three pages and not even a single joke about Doom Eternal dropping frames like Linus drops hardware. Disappoint.

Shame the video was shot at 30 too.

Nice video, covers a lot and has some good information.

The guy gets excited over new tech, get over it people. Sure he carries on a bit much about it being able to output to a monitor, especially since every phone and tablet these days can do it, but he's just excited.

I won't buy it if they ever sell it here in Australia, but a gen 2 or 3 that is significantly smaller and with an OLED screen and more powerful with more storage I'd absolutely consider.

Gotta love the hate in here because dude mentions his sponsors for like 30 seconds, just skip it folks. Do y'all make your own livings by doing stuff you agree with and are happy to do 100% of the time? Congratulations, that's rare. Most adults have to do shit they aren't crazy about sometimes to put the roof over their head. If Linus could employ people and make content with 0 ads while supporting himself and other people's families I'm sure he'd love the opportunity.

Re: his hands-on, it was unsurprisingly the most detailed and relevant of the ones I watched (tested, gb, gamesradar). Would love to see DF with a unit too.

The guy makes a lot of money and what does he do with that money? Fires it back into the company in the form of class chill out room, a superb LAN room and no doubt every other thing you can think of that benefits his employees making their lives better, if he was American he'd be working em to death and driving a lambo ffs

I know it's too early to start talking about what they can do with the enxg Steam Deck but Valve has already stated if this is successful they will continue making iterations.

The big things they didn't do is

- Micro SD card slot supporting UHS 3 speed, no reason why this one has a UHS-1 speed slot

- Detachable controls like Switch, there maybe issues with sticky buttons, stick drift etc so replacing controls would have been nice if you controls mess up due to wear and tear. Also would have been nice for when connecting Deck to the TV and play with detached controls like you do in the Switch, no you would need to buy or use a spare Bluetooth controller. If detachable controls isn't possible due to internal designs not allowing it then perhaps something like those controllers with detachable parts, take each part off seperatleoy such as sticks, dpad etc.

- 100Hz VRR freesync screen. As this is PC gaming it would have been nice to have this so less demanding games you can play at higher framerates. But it's not even about playing higher than 60FPS. It would be nice to lock game at say 40FPS if you can't make 60FPS. But on a non VRR screen that would create judder, so you would be limited to 30FPS or 60FPS. A VRR screen you can have more options like 50FPS, 35FPS etc which would be great as this is a PC device and game settings are customizable

- 2 USB-C ports one on the top one on the bottom like the Aya Neo so you can have a dock with a port for the bottom. I also like extra USB port just in case the port damages overtime on my phone due to wear and tear the phone charges if I insert USB-C cable in a certain way as it's damaged an extra slot would have helped. Also 2 slots you can do extra things like attach a controller or mouse while you charge it another slot. Add a battery bank while u connect a usb stick in another slot etc.

Hopefully an eventual Steam Deck 2 has all the above features but for a first time effort the Steam Deck is feature packed.

Can we talk about the Steam Deck and not Linus ? So is Nintendo screwed ?
Don't think so unless Nintendo shit their bed with their software. Yeah I know you can emulate a Switch but legally you still need a Switch and it's still pretty much foolproof (no tinkering needed)

I probably should have went with the 256gb deck, but ended up going with the 64gb version.
Not too late to change, I'm not in any super rush to get mine and am fine reading the first reviews and I'll bet 6 months of testing and software updates will be good for it.

One thing I noticed since the new previews specifically from the Giant Bomb preview is that games load quicker than Switch from the SD card. They loaded a game forgot what it is and compare to startup of the Switch port. And Steam Deck loaded significantly faster than Switch from the SD card. People keep mentioning it will be a issue with future games. But we know currently every single game that's on Steam now is designed to run on a HDD minimum and a SD card is faster than a HDD. And I'm expecting majority of future games will be designed around a HDD. The big AAA next gen only games that would require a SSD would probably be limited by Deck GPU before it's limited by lack of SSD anyways. Those games will be few and far between, the reason why future next gen AAA games may require SSD is to load assets instantly so we can have more on screen, but those games will be limited by Deck GPU regardless. So the Deck 64GB model is actually great value for the money and potentially you still may be able to connect a NVME drive into it if you open it up. You also are not limited by internal SSD, you can have a external drive SSD drive attached.

I don't get the hate for Linus. the guy might be a little annoying, but at least he's upfront with his bs and shows a lot of cool tech stuff. I watched the hands on for the Steam Deck and it's fine. he's the only one on the market right now that got a hands on video on it so far and he only got like an hour or two to mess with it so I'm perfectly fine with what he was able to provide in that video. he showed it running Doom Eternal and ran CS:GO, did thermal test and do some comparison with the other closest similar system on the market. that's plenty of things for that amount of time already.

Early orders would be much better off keeping and reselling their original unit rather than swapping to the back of a different queue. You're going to be waiting for a century at this point anyways. December units will probably resell for enough profit to buy a 256GB for free.

That would be my fear too. I'd like the expensive model for the anti-glare etched glass and larger storage but that's a lot of moolah for something with the potential to break really easily.

Need to find a bash script or instructions to get a good Big Picture mode equivalent for Gamepass or maybe even GoG galaxy 2.0

I pre-ordered the 256gb model,. It's an amazing concept, but it's gonna run into a lot of performance issues not least as times goes on and the fact it doesn't have VRR / G-sync / Freesync is such a missed opportunity. I guess it would have added to much on the price, but it would be so good to have on a device like this where we are gonna have fps issues in a lot of games. Of course, I would probably use it mostly for things like Isometric RPGs / Strategy games / Indies and not AAA games, but still it really annoys me.

After comparing with Aya Neo I'm more dissapointed they didn't include 2 USC-C ports one on top one on bottom. Having only s top port limits the potential peripheral attachments. Could have had cool things like battery bank or mini keyboard attachments. With a tip USB-C port it would be too top heavy. The ideal peripheral would be a hybrid battery bank keyboard. Doubles as a extended battery as well as a keyboard.

Edit
Quick Google search I found something similar in a few seconds I'm sure when Deck releases we will have nice ones that clamp on to a deck

If I were to guess, Valve really don't want to risk potential lawsuits with Nintendo over the design of a "gaming device that docks into a stationary USB hub with HDMI out via USB-C connector at the bottom". I don't remember how their specific patent for the Switch is phrased, but I am pretty sure that if the Deck, which is irrefutably a gaming device what with the gamepad bolted onto it, had a USB-C connector at the bottom intended to interface with a "dock" for HDMI out and extra USB ports and charging, it would be cutting it rather too close for comfort.

I had no idea Nintnedo had a patent for a usb c dock connection at a bottom of a device. I've seen a 100 devices which dock like that even before Nintendo Switch released.

Seriously? They got a patent for that? My god they hand patents out too easy sometimes

This thread is embarrassing. I wish more youtubers, and people in general had the ethics of Linus Sebastian. He's one of the most informative and entertaining tech youtubers out there, and here we are in this piece of shit of a thread, pissing all over him? Its a bit disappointing, honestly.

Clearly a man with great artistic integrity then.
Do you know how many views this guy gets? If having a thumbnail that's more in the style that gets more clicks nets him an extra $50,000 in his business's bank account, he would be a fucking imbecile not to use that kind of thumbnail. Why would he, or anybody, give away that kind of free revenue? Are you insane?

I see you're a Star Wars fan. Well the next Star Wars film should have them all wearing clothes with "sponsored by NASA" on or similar, because why would anybody give away that kind of free revenue? That'd be insane. Apparently.

You overplayed your hand and showed your troll face too early.

Linus is a kind-hearted, generous soul, a cut above the normal crop. How dare you mock his accomplishments.
