Linus goes hands on with Steam Deck

I know it upsets a lot of people, especially in this thread, but sadly the thumbnails are done on purpose, they even said it gets them more views and YouTube's dumb ass algorhythm prefers these kinds of thumbnails so it can push it to more people.

tl;dr: The system is biased as fuck and you need to do these shitty thumbnails to get maximum views.

I liked the video. Nice to see someone passionate going over the hardware in detail and testing things that more mainstream outlets wouldn't have the guts to try (you're not going to see thermal cameras and latency tests from IGN for instance).

Get Gamers Nexus in there next. *shrug*

What a useless video holy shit.

Why not try something actual games out lamo.

he tried Doom Eternal and directly compared it to a competing handheld. and also tried actual performance with dynamic res off at medium settings and 720p. that should give you some decent info.

I didn't watch the video, and he may have covered it, but will they need to build another version of the game to run of the handheld?

Which is fun and all, but why not boot up control or anything else that does require some hardware?

What's the first thing u want to do with this thing? plug it into a monitor to see if it can push 4k resolutions? see if it can run netflix? or actual like you know, play some fucking games and see how it runs where people u know buy it for maybe.

Linus: ?????????

This is what I came here to say. Like the guy or not, he was the only one that actually knew to turn on performance metrics, turn off dynamic res, and compare it like-for-like against the Aya Neo. Rest of the journos were pretty much useless.

For real. Plenty of useful info here, especially the thermal stuff.
It's usually 1 of 2 things when I see random unexplainable hate; someone did/said something woke, and/or someone said something bad about Playstation or consoles in general.

Quick google suggests Linux may have committed both sins lol

Linus is awesome. He's really smart and knows a lot about tech and how it relates to both the casual and power users.
Yeah people are negative here but he had by far the best preview with fps counter comparisons with other hardware and temperature camera etc.
And I for one can't wait for the Deck!

No it's the same game, it's a PC, but it sounds like Valve is sending out dev kits and is trying to get devs to make sure their games run well on the Deck.

This is by far the best and most comprehensive preview of the Steam deck. He actually turns on metrics, tests the heat dissipation, screen response, and a few other things.

All the other "journalists" were completely useless in comparison.

I know some people don't like Linus but this was a good video showing what different settings ran and how it compared to another handheld. Plus seeing how the buttons act/feel. Checked heat levels and went over all the bells and whistles.

Never mind I saw Doom, but hopefully like you mention devs kits will get those games running smotthly.

This is why SponsorBlock was created.
No joke i used his channel to test if sponsorBlock was working. I gave my old man a desktop so i added ublock+sponsorblock and anti cookie stuff. First thing he said was. My god that guy is annoying.
He never heard of him obviously.

i love it shows how much time you save. And color code the skips
I also recommend using the mute button for his videos and using CC. So you don't have to listen to his voice.

My only problem with Deck is that it's WAY too wide. I don't want touch controls - for me d-pad and abxy buttons can be placed instead of motion pads making device much smaller.

you must have missed all the videos where he shits on Intel, while having a video sponsored by Intel just 2 days later.
Yeah yeah but as soon as a new Intel CPU is having 1 FPS advantage on AMD he'll go « omg team blue for the win guyz »

The irony is the other journalists some of them where actual big sites like PC Gamer. You would think a proper site would do a proper preview. It just shows nowadays there is no distinction between a big site like IGN and a YouTuber

Fuck am I the only one that likes aul Linus? I find him charming in a real honest geeky way, he's fucking wholesome and comes across as honest and between him and his team they all know there shit and his company looks a great place to work and him a great boss...

Y'all are mean bastards

I wouldn't have bought it if it didn't have the touch pads. Without them, some genres are unplayable. And as an incidental bonus, the width of the console makes the grips more comfortable and cooler as Linus' thermal testing shows.

For my tastes, they could have ditched the right thumbstick for a touchpad, putting the face buttons where the touchpad is, then cut out the left touchpad and put the D-pad there instead: the perfect FPS setup. The control scheme they went with is more flexible though--suitable for all genres and control setups--and, more importantly, it's apparently very comfortable and functional.

Plus, it's not like shaving off the width of two joysticks would make that behemoth any more pocketable. We're all going to have to get carrying cases.

Good if it will work for you. I personally don't mind about FPS, let alone playing them on a handheld.

Sorry, if I wasn't clear. I ramble.

I meant to say that even though it has unnecessary control elements even for my gaming needs, I understand that they include all of those pieces to make it work for every player and every game, so I don't begrudge them the "unnecessary" inclusions. That's all.

I agree. Deck controls maybe the best of any handheld. It's only the size that worries me, aesthetics. Switch OLED is about perfect for me in this regard and it was already big :)
Edit: Imagine if Deck was modular. I can buy OLED and more compact controllers🙂

You're not wrong. It is pretty chunky, and the face is so crowded with inputs that it's certainly not a looker.

I'm just hoping that all makes it as comfy to hold and use as reports suggest.
