So wait let's recap for a minute. Guys, who here that actually own a PS5 and have seen many of these titles on the base PS5 for comparison can honestly say that PSSR doesn't work? The goal with PSSR is to reconstruct a 4K image that rivals the quality mode on the base PS5 and to offer a superior image to existing solutions such as FSR, TAAU, or other customs upscalers. In the vast majority of the over 100 PRO enabled games out there, PSSR is a revelation and works remarkably better than the base PS5 solutions. Do we really need zoomed in GIF comparisons vs FSR to see this? No, it's immediately obvious when just looking on your screen. Is PSSR perfect? No! Is there still room for improvement in many titles? Absolutely! But again, it's still extremely early days and PSSR will continue to improve and devs will get better with their integrations (as we're already seeing with the latest crop of titles: Black Myth, Space Marine 2, Alan Wake 2 etc)
Bottom line: we're talking about the first ever machine learning reconstruction algorithm built for console. Sony's 1st ever attempt at building a custom neural network designed for super resolution. And you know what? It actually works! And only 1 month from launch, it works pretty well if you actually pay attention. It addresses the primary fault of FSR....motion artifacts and disocclusion. It delivers a more convincing 4K image (even with very low input resolutions) that can even surpass the native 4K modes on the base PS5 in some cases (e.g Stellar Blade, TLOU Pt1/2, God of War: Ragnarok, Demon's Souls). It really does take some games to the next level in terms of IQ and has delivered more than few "wow" moments already (FFVII Rebirth, Space Marine 2, Demons' Souls, TLOU, God of War, Stellar Blade etc).
The focus seems to be on the handful of titles that have poor results with PSSR mostly due to poor integrations on the devs. In these
rare cases, the base PS5 IQ actually looks better including games like Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, Jedi Survivor, and Silent Hill 2. But somehow, those fews titles trump all of the cases where PSSR is clearly better and the narrative becomes "PSSR isn't ready" or "PSSR sucks". It apparently takes developers adding a PSSR toggle to remind folks that many of the titles with IQ issues after the PRO patch also had worse IQ issues
before the PRO patch (*
cough Alan Wake 2).
If nothing else, the presentation today by Mark Cerny should remind folks just how complex and sophisticated a product like PSSR actually is. Yes the Internet (and GAF) can be toxic and ridiculous with the incessant criticisms and complaining but this really is a remarkable achievement for Sony and the game industry as a whole. Yes, there is still much work to be done but sometimes it's OK to actually commend someone and say "BRAVO" for all the hard work.
